Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA Raspberry Pi cannot safely reboot just because FFmpeg has stopped sending a healthy YouTube stream unless something checks for that condition. Use separate recovery layers: FFmpeg reconnect options for supported connection errors, a systemd service to restart FFmpeg if it exits, and a progress monitor to detect a process that is still running but stalled. Have that monitor restart FFmpeg first—or request a full Pi reboot if that is explicitly the recovery policy. Keep the Pi hardware watchdog for operating-system hangs; it does not check whether YouTube is receiving frames.
First decide what “hung” means
A stream can fail in several different ways, and each needs a different signal. A quiet log alone is not enough to identify a hang: FFmpeg may not be configured to emit regular progress, or the input may simply be quiet.

| Failure state | What can detect it | Suitable first response |
|---|---|---|
| A supported input or protocol connection error | FFmpeg’s applicable reconnect behavior | Let FFmpeg retry within a bounded policy |
| FFmpeg exits | A service manager such as systemd | Restart the FFmpeg service |
| FFmpeg remains alive but output progress stops | A separate monitor checking configured progress signals against a timeout | Restart FFmpeg; reboot the Pi only if the chosen policy calls for it |
| The operating system stops servicing its watchdog | The Raspberry Pi hardware watchdog, when correctly configured | Reset the device |
These layers are complementary, not interchangeable. In particular, a process-exit restart policy does not catch a process that remains alive but stuck, and a hardware watchdog is not a YouTube stream-health check.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use FFmpeg reconnect options for the errors they cover
FFmpeg documents options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error and reconnect_streamed, along with retry and delay controls such as reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_max and reconnect_delay_total_max. Their applicability depends on the protocol and the direction of the operation. Check the installed FFmpeg version and build, and confirm which input or output protocol the option applies to before adding it to a command. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Reconnect behavior can help with documented connection, EOF, network or selected HTTP errors. It does not establish that an output-side stream is progressing or that YouTube is showing a healthy live stream. Do not treat a reconnect flag as a general-purpose hang detector.
Run FFmpeg under systemd so an exited process can restart
Put the exact FFmpeg command in a systemd service configured to start at boot and restart when the process exits. This covers process-level failure. A Raspberry Pi forum post illustrates a YouTube streaming service using Restart=always alongside a separate watchdog service, but it is an anecdotal example—not a universal or authoritative unit-file recipe. A restart policy alone does not detect a still-running process that has stopped making progress. See the Raspberry Pi forum example.

There is no safe, universal copy-paste unit or monitor command for this job without knowing the Pi model, operating-system release, FFmpeg command, protocols, and the signal that defines a healthy stream. Configure the service for your system, keep the stream key out of publicly readable files and logs, and verify how your service manager handles credentials and permissions.

- Choose a meaningful progress signal. Configure FFmpeg to emit progress data that your monitor can read, or use another signal appropriate to the input and output. Decide what constitutes progress—for example, advancing output time or frames—rather than checking only whether the process exists.
- Set a realistic deadline. Allow for expected network jitter and normal pauses in the source. A silent log is useful only if you have configured regular progress output; otherwise silence does not prove a stall.
- Choose the least disruptive response. On a missed progress deadline, have the monitor request a restart of the FFmpeg service first. If the requirement is specifically a full device reboot, the monitor can request
sudo rebootor an equivalent privileged action. Raspberry Pi listssudo rebootas a command-line reboot action in its getting-started documentation. Automation permissions and safe service ordering must be configured for your own OS and service setup. - Prevent recovery loops. Add a cooldown or failure limit so a persistent camera, network or configuration problem does not cause repeated restarts or reboots without end. The appropriate limit depends on the deployment; no single value is established for every stream.
- Test the recovery path deliberately. Use a controlled interruption, then check service logs and confirm the actual YouTube-side result before relying on unattended recovery. A successful process restart does not by itself prove that the broadcast resumed properly.
Configure the Pi hardware watchdog separately
The Raspberry Pi hardware watchdog is intended to recover from an operating-system hang or crash after boot. Raspberry Pi’s rolling boot configuration documentation says a nonzero kernel_watchdog_timeout enables a hardware timer passed to the OS. If the OS does not regularly reset it, the device resets after the timeout; ongoing servicing is typically controlled by systemd’s RuntimeWatchdogSec.

The documentation specifically notes that Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm does not enable RuntimeWatchdogSec by default and that it must be configured in /etc/systemd/system.conf before the firmware kernel watchdog can be used. Do not generalize that Bookworm default to every Raspberry Pi OS release. Match watchdog configuration and firmware/kernel handover to the particular Pi model and OS; the documentation discusses model limitations and handover for Raspberry Pi 4 and 5.
The same documentation describes a bootloader watchdog separately: it can reset a device if the OS does not start within its timeout, and is cancelled once the Arm CPU starts. That boot-only protection is not runtime monitoring of FFmpeg or a stream.

Choose the recovery layer that matches the failure
| Option | Detects | Effect | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reconnect | Documented connection, EOF, network or selected HTTP errors | Attempts to keep the process and system running | Protocol- and build-dependent; not a general output-progress detector |
| Service restart | FFmpeg process exit; a separate monitor can request it after a progress timeout | Restarts the streaming software | A restart policy by itself does not detect a still-running hung process |
| Pi hardware watchdog | Operating system stops servicing the watchdog | Resets the device | Requires correct model/OS configuration; does not verify stream health |
| Monitor-triggered full reboot | Whatever condition the monitor checks | Resets software and device state | Requires a reliable signal, suitable permissions and a cooldown; implementation is deployment-specific |
