Use automated essay grading as a low-stakes first pass, not as the final judge. Give the system a defined learning target and rubric, require text-based evidence for every comment, and ask for only a few revision priorities. A teacher should then sample drafts, check accuracy and fairness, correct false positives, and decide what feedback students receive. Students review, challenge or accept the comments, revise, and resubmit. Keep final and high-stakes decisions with a teacher or trained human panel.
What automated essay grading can—and cannot—do
Automated essay scoring (AES) uses statistical or machine-learning systems to analyze writing against a prompt, rubric, or set of traits. Depending on the system, it may flag grammar and mechanics, word use, sentence complexity, organization, style, evidence, or reasoning. Some tools return a numerical score; others provide comments, highlighted passages, or revision suggestions.

For classroom use, the safest role is formative feedback on a draft. The system can quickly identify patterns for a student to investigate, while the teacher decides whether a comment is valid, relevant to the learning goal, and appropriate for that writer. An automated output is a hypothesis about the draft, not an official grade.
Evidence supports this limited use but does not justify universal accuracy claims. A 2024 systematic review of 68 articles published from 2008 through 2023 found mixed results for automated error-flagging accuracy, and some learners preferred instructor feedback. Performance varies with the prompt, genre, rubric, language background, model, and implementation. There is no single accuracy percentage that applies to every class.

UK Department for Education guidance in 2025 quotes Kortemeyer: “artificial intelligence is capable of providing meaningful formative feedback to completely open-ended assessment responses, but might not be ready yet for high-stakes summative assessment.” The same guidance cites Tate and colleagues, who do not recommend AI for high-stakes summative use or as a replacement for teachers’ evaluation.
Start by defining the learning target
Before selecting a tool or writing a prompt, state what students are meant to learn in this assignment. A system that mainly counts errors or rewards longer sentences can miss the construct you actually teach.
Separate ideas from mechanics
If the target is argument, ask for a claim, relevant evidence, explanation of how the evidence supports the claim, and acknowledgement of uncertainty or counterarguments. If the target is disciplinary reasoning, specify how students should use sources, methods, or concepts. Treat spelling, punctuation, and grammar as a separate trait unless language conventions are the purpose of the lesson.

Define observable success
Convert broad goals such as “strong writing” into behaviors a reader can locate in the text:
- A defensible claim appears in the introduction and remains consistent.
- Each major point is supported by accurate, relevant evidence.
- The writer explains the connection between evidence and claim rather than listing quotations.
- Paragraphs follow a purposeful order with transitions that show relationships.
- Sources are integrated and cited in the required style.
- Sentence-level conventions do not obscure meaning.
These statements become the traits the system may comment on. Tell it not to infer traits you have not defined.
Build a rubric the system can use
Automated feedback is more useful when the rubric contains observable criteria and descriptions for each performance level. Avoid a single holistic label such as “good” or “weak.” Include the evidence a reviewer should look for and the limits of the judgment.
Include evidence requirements
In the instructions, require the system to quote or point to the sentence or passage supporting every comment. Add a rule such as: “If the draft does not provide enough evidence to support a judgment, write ‘insufficient evidence’ rather than guessing.” This makes unsupported praise and criticism easier to catch.

- the trait involved;
- the exact passage that triggered the observation;
- why the passage matters to the assignment target;
- a question or next step the student can try;
- an uncertainty note when the system is not confident.
Do not ask for an official grade during a draft pass. If a numerical scale is useful for teacher calibration, keep it provisional and hidden from the student until a human has reviewed it.
A teacher-reviewed workflow from first draft to final decision
1. Define the construct
Write the assignment’s learning target, permitted evidence, audience, genre, and language expectations. Decide which traits are in scope and which are not. For an argument essay, for example, prioritize reasoning and evidence before sentence polish.
2. Prepare the rubric and prompt
Give the system the prompt, trait definitions, performance descriptors, word or source requirements, and the required response format. Ask it to cite text for each observation and to mark missing evidence. State that it is providing formative feedback only and must not issue a final grade.
3. Run a low-stakes draft pass
Process drafts after students have produced a complete first version. Return trait-level observations and revision questions. Set a maximum number of priorities so students can act on them; three focused actions are usually more usable than twenty scattered corrections.
4. Sample and calibrate before release
Read a representative sample across proficiency levels, English-learner status, disability accommodations, dialects, and other relevant groups. Compare automated comments and provisional scores with trained human ratings. Record:
- False positives: a problem the system flags that is not actually present.
- Omissions: a material problem the system misses.
- Unsupported comments: claims that cannot be tied to a passage or rubric trait.
- Disagreements: cases where a teacher and system interpret the same evidence differently.
Correct or remove misleading comments before students see them. ETS guidance calls for documented validity, reliability, fairness, and error-handling procedures; a calibration log provides that record.
5. Have students make sense of the feedback
Require students to label each comment accept, question, or reject, then explain the decision using the rubric and their own text. A student might write, “I reject the ‘missing evidence’ comment because the source appears in paragraph 4; I will clarify the link to my claim instead.” This turns the output into metacognition rather than an instruction to obey a machine.

6. Revise and resubmit
Require a revised essay or a reflection showing which feedback was used. Students should identify the changed passage and explain the reasoning behind the change. The teacher can use recurring revision needs to plan a mini-lesson or conference.
7. Make the teacher decision
If a grade is required, assign it from the rubric after reviewing the draft, the feedback interaction, and the revision. Escalate unusual cases, accessibility concerns, disputed outputs, or suspected prompt failures to a human reviewer. Do not let an automated score become the grade merely because it is convenient.
How to write a practical grading prompt
A prompt should be specific enough to constrain the system and short enough to maintain across assignments. Adapt this structure to your platform:
- Role and purpose: “You are a formative writing coach. Do not assign an official grade.”
- Assignment: provide the exact question, audience, genre, length, and source requirements.
- Learning target: list the traits, such as claim, evidence, reasoning, organization, and conventions.
- Evidence rule: require a quoted sentence or passage for every observation; use “insufficient evidence” when needed.
- Output limit: request one strength and no more than two revision priorities, each with a question or next step.
- Uncertainty and scope: prohibit judgments about traits not in the rubric and require an uncertainty note when interpretation is ambiguous.
Provide the rubric descriptors in the same order every time. Save the prompt, rubric version, model or vendor version, date, and geography so that changes can be audited later.
What the evidence says about accuracy and English learners
English-language learners
Wilson and Huang’s 2024 study examined 2,829 students in grades 3–5 who were English language learners. Automated and human scoring showed similar predictive relationships. Both methods were weaker for ELLs on a general state test than on an ELL-focused test. The finding does not prove that a particular classroom tool is fair; it shows why schools should check local subgroup results rather than assume either method is accurate.
Contextualized versus generic feedback
An ETS study in 2022 compared 227 students in 11 classes receiving contextualized automated feedback with 138 students in 9 classes receiving generic automated feedback. Both conditions improved scientific-argument scores. Contextualized feedback produced larger gains for attributing uncertainty, with effects moderated by revisions, initial score, and gender. Feedback tied to the assignment and discipline therefore deserves preference over generic grammar advice.
Why a single benchmark is misleading
Agreement with a human score can change when the prompt, rubric, genre, language background, model, or classroom process changes. Report local agreement, false-positive and omission rates, and subgroup results. Never present one advertised accuracy number as a universal AES benchmark.

Construct validity
Check whether comments address the intended learning target or mainly surface grammar, length, vocabulary, and formulaic organization. Sample high-scoring and low-scoring drafts for evidence that the system rewards the traits you teach.

Reliability
Run comparable drafts or repeated evaluations and compare the results with trained human ratings. Large unexplained swings indicate that the prompt, rubric, or system needs investigation before wider use.
Fairness
Examine error patterns by English-learner status, disability accommodations, dialect, race or ethnicity where lawful, and writing proficiency. Review whether a language difference is being treated as a reasoning failure and whether accessibility tools alter the output. The 2024 ELL study found no unique automated bias relative to human scoring, but both methods showed weaknesses across test contexts.
Transparency and agency
Publish a plain-language explanation of what is scored, what is not, how teachers verify comments, and how students can challenge an output. Keep an appeal route that reaches a human.

Privacy and security
Minimize personally identifying information in uploaded drafts. Confirm retention periods, deletion controls, access permissions, model-training terms, and the vendor’s security practices. Follow school policy and applicable law. The US Department of Education identifies privacy, bias, and inappropriate use as AI-assessment risks; ETS also flags privacy and score-bias risks.
Drift and updates
Recheck performance after a model, rubric, prompt, integration, or vendor change. Record the version, date, location, assignment, subgroup, and calibration results so a later score can be explained.

| Comparison area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Specificity and actionability | Does each comment identify a passage, explain why it matters, and suggest a feasible revision? |
| Rubric alignment | Can teachers define local traits and performance descriptors instead of accepting a generic score? |
| Evidence citations | Does the output quote or locate supporting text and acknowledge insufficient evidence? |
| Local accuracy and subgroup fairness | Can the school test agreement, false positives, omissions, and subgroup patterns on its own assignments? |
| Teacher control | Are there overrides, review queues, audit logs, and a way to suppress an unsafe comment? |
| Privacy and retention | What data is stored, for how long, where, and for which secondary uses? |
| Revision support | Can students respond to comments, resubmit, and document changes? |
| Total cost | Include licensing, implementation, training, accessibility review, calibration time, and ongoing monitoring. |

Common failure modes and fixes
The system rewards length or polished grammar
Symptom: verbose, error-free drafts receive high scores despite weak evidence or reasoning. Fix: separate content traits from conventions, require passage-level evidence, and sample high-scoring drafts for construct validity.
Students treat every comment as correct
Symptom: writers make unnecessary changes or erase a valid voice. Fix: require accept/question/reject labels and a rubric-based explanation before revision.

Symptom: students cannot decide where to begin. Fix: cap the output at one strength and one or two priorities tied to the learning target.
Comments are not grounded in the draft
Symptom: the system claims a source or paragraph is missing when it is present. Fix: enforce the quotation rule, review a representative sample, and remove unsupported comments before release.
Results change after an update
Symptom: comparable drafts receive different feedback after a model or prompt change. Fix: rerun calibration examples, compare subgroup results, record the version and date, and pause use if the change is unexplained.
A student disputes an automated judgment
Symptom: the comment conflicts with the rubric, an accommodation, or the student’s evidence. Fix: route the case to a teacher, document the decision, and use the disagreement to improve the prompt or rubric.

Bottom line for teachers
Automated essay grading is most defensible as a structured conversation starter: it accelerates a first pass, surfaces possible patterns, and gives students material to evaluate. Its value depends on a clear construct, an evidence-based rubric, limited priorities, teacher calibration, student agency, and documented checks for validity, fairness, privacy, and drift. Use it to inform professional judgment—not to replace it.
