To use Apple Intelligence, update a compatible iPhone or iPad to iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, set the device and Siri to the same supported language, and make sure Apple Intelligence is enabled. Then use the feature from the relevant app—for example, Writing Tools in a text field or Clean Up in Photos. Not every feature is available on every device, in every language, or in every region.
Check whether your iPhone or iPad is compatible
Apple’s current requirements for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 include these models:

- iPhone: iPhone 16 models or later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple lists on-device storage requirements of up to 14 GB for specified newer high-memory devices and up to 8 GB for other supported iPhone and iPad models. Check Apple’s Apple Intelligence requirements for the current model and storage details; requirements and availability can change.

Update, set your language, and enable Apple Intelligence
- Update the device to iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, if that release is available for it.
- Set the device language and Siri language to the same supported language. Apple’s current list includes English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
- Allow the required language downloads and on-device resources to finish. If you change Siri’s language, Apple Intelligence may be unavailable temporarily while the new language downloads and the settings match.
- Check the Apple Intelligence setting. In Apple’s iPadOS 26 guide, the route is Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, where users can turn the feature on or off. The setting displayed can depend on software version and previous setup, so the exact iPadOS 26 path should not be assumed to describe every iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 screen.
Apple says Apple Intelligence becomes automatically available on eligible devices after updating to the 27.0 releases in supported languages and regions. Its availability may still vary by feature, platform, language, and region. Apple also states that it continues to work when you travel to other regions; mainland China has separate restrictions based on where the device was purchased and the Apple Account region. Use writing, summaries, and reminders
Write or revise text
In an app with text selected or a text field active, open the built-in writing controls and choose a Writing Tools option such as proofreading, rewriting, summarizing, or composing. The available controls depend on the app and platform. Apple’s iPhone guide and iPad guide describe using Siri to draft, summarize, or give feedback on writing as well.
Summarize information and create reminders
Apple documents summaries in places including Mail, Messages, Notes audio recordings, phone calls, voicemail, notifications, and Safari pages. You can also use natural-language descriptions to create reminders and receive suggested reminders. Which of these options appears depends on the platform, language, and app. For the app-specific steps, consult Apple’s iPhone feature guide or iPad feature guide.

Create and edit images
Apple’s image features include Image Playground, Genmoji, Image Wand, memory movies, and Photos tools such as Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe. The creation tools let you make images or emoji-style designs; Photos editing tools work on images in your library. On iPad, Apple’s documented route for Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe is to open a photo in Photos and tap Edit, then choose the available tool. See Apple’s iPad guide for supported controls.
Try Siri and visual features
Apple’s current guides identify next-generation Siri features as beta. On iPhone, Siri can use the camera view to identify what is visible, answer questions, search from the camera frame, or take actions. Apple also describes personal-context understanding, onscreen awareness, and broader world knowledge for Siri on iPad. The options shown can vary by device and software. Treat responses as assistance, not as a verified source of important facts.

Translate and communicate
Apple lists Live Translation in Messages, Phone, and FaceTime, with supported languages that differ by feature. Live Translation with AirPods on iPhone requires a compatible, current-firmware set—AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation or later, AirPods Pro 2 or later, or AirPods Max 2—paired with an iPhone that has Apple Intelligence enabled. AirPods are not required for Apple Intelligence generally or for using it on iPad. Check Apple’s requirements page for current compatibility details.
Automate tasks and organize Safari
Apple describes using natural-language descriptions to create Shortcuts, calendar events, and reminders. Safari can also organize tabs and provide page-change notifications. Some of these features rely on server-side processing and may have daily usage limits; Apple says limits can vary with request complexity, system demand, policies, and other factors. Understand accuracy, limits, and ChatGPT privacy
Apple warns: “Apple Intelligence uses generative models, and outputs may be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. Check important information for accuracy.” This applies whether you are asking for a summary, a rewrite, or an answer. Review generated text and verify consequential details before relying on them.
Some features—including Siri AI, intelligent photo-editing tools, Image Playground, and some Shortcuts model use—may have daily limits because they use server-side processing. Availability can also differ across devices, platforms, languages, and regions.

ChatGPT is an optional extension, not a requirement for Apple Intelligence. Apple says that requests sent to ChatGPT can include attachments and limited context such as time zone, country, device type, language, and which feature was used. When signed out of a ChatGPT account, requests are handled under Apple’s described signed-out arrangement; when signed in, ChatGPT account settings and OpenAI privacy policies apply. Review Apple’s privacy and setup information before enabling the extension if you want to understand what is sent.
