IPO subscription figures show reported demand at a particular time; grey market premium (GMP) is an informal estimate, not an official forecast. Neither tells you on its own whether an IPO is fairly priced, suitable for you, or likely to deliver a listing gain. Before applying, verify the figures and their timing, assess the offer document, and use the official application process if you decide to proceed.
What IPO subscription data tells you—and what it does not
Subscription measures bids relative to the shares available in an investor category at a reported stage. A figure such as “5 times subscribed” describes that relationship; it does not establish that the company is attractive, that the offer is fairly valued, or that an applicant will receive shares.

Pay attention to what the exchange is actually displaying. NSE cautions that its graphical bid data shows the position of bids and is not necessarily the same as subscription to the issue. Live bids, confirmed or valid applications, and final subscription figures may differ. Check the labels and issue-specific update time on the NSE issue-information page rather than treating a live graphic as a final result.

Where the exchange reports retail, non-institutional, and institutional demand separately, interpret each figure against its own category and available shares. A high multiple in one category does not describe demand in another. Before comparing figures, check the denominator, whether the data is live or final, and whether it represents bids or valid applications.

Make only like-for-like comparisons
- Compare the same investor category, not an overall figure with a category-specific one.
- Match the reporting stage and timestamp.
- Check that both figures use the same definition and validity status.
- Do not combine one issue’s current bids with another issue’s final subscription.
SEBI’s ICDR framework addresses disclosure of oversubscription and allotment information after an issue, and restricts issuer-connected parties from advertising oversubscription or investor response while the public issue is open. A promotional subscription figure is not regulatory endorsement. Consult the current amended regulation before relying on detailed legal requirements: SEBI regulations.
How to interpret grey market premium
GMP is commonly expressed as an estimated grey-market price minus the IPO’s upper price band. For example, if an estimate is ₹30 above the upper band, that arithmetic describes the quoted premium; it does not mean the share will list ₹30 higher or that an investor has a particular probability of profit.

A 2026 SEBI adjudication order describes perceived GMP drivers such as demand and supply, market sentiment, company fundamentals, and IPO pricing, but cautions: “These factors are not sacrosanct and they do not come from any regulatory mandate.” The order’s description is not an endorsement of GMP as a regulated measure or return forecast. See the SEBI adjudication order.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe official material cited here does not establish a consolidated, regulated GMP feed or validate GMP’s predictive accuracy. If you encounter a GMP quote, record who published it, when it was observed, and which upper price band it uses. Treat an unattributed or repeatedly copied number cautiously; estimates can move with sentiment and perceived demand.
Check the offer document before weighing the signals
Subscription and GMP describe market signals, not the issuer’s full investment case. Read the latest official offer document and assess:
- What the company does and how its business model works.
- Its disclosed financial performance and the risks that could affect it.
- How fresh-issue proceeds will be used, and the size of any offer-for-sale component.
- The valuation basis and the rationale for the offer price.
- Promoter and shareholder matters relevant to the offer.
Use the offer document to form your own view of the business, risks, and price rather than letting an oversubscription multiple or GMP substitute for that work. No single signal in the figures above establishes that an IPO is suitable for an individual investor.

Verify the issue details and application status
- Open the official exchange issue page. Confirm the issuer, issue dates, price band, category definitions, bid-data labels, and last update time. Use the page for the specific issue; live data and deadlines can change.
- Check the application route and cutoff. Follow the issue-specific instructions for an official bank, broker, or exchange-supported channel. If applying through UPI, check the issue page for the mandate deadline and allow time for the mandate to be accepted.
- Confirm the ASBA block or UPI mandate. NSE issue information describes mandate status and cautions applicants to apply early enough to avoid technical constraints. A submitted application is not confirmation that the required funds have been blocked.
What happens to ASBA funds
Under ASBA, application money is blocked in the applicant’s bank account rather than transferred upfront. NSE explains that the money remains in the account until the basis of allotment is finalized; the amount for allotted shares is then transferred, while the balance is unblocked. SEBI likewise describes that if no shares are allotted, there is no refund process because the money was blocked, not paid away. See SEBI’s ASBA guidance and NSE’s IPO investment process.
A disciplined decision checklist
- Data: Can you identify the official page, data definition, category, and timestamp?
- Demand: Are comparisons like-for-like, and are live bids being kept distinct from final subscription?
- GMP: Is the source and observation time clear, and is the number being treated as an informal estimate rather than a forecast?
- Offer: Have you reviewed the business, financials, risks, proceeds, offer-for-sale details, and valuation rationale in the offer document?
- Application: Have you checked the issue-specific deadline and confirmed the ASBA block or UPI mandate through the appropriate route?
This is a general guide to Indian IPO data, not an assessment of a particular issue or a personal recommendation. The cited official material does not establish a statistic showing that a high subscription multiple or GMP predicts post-listing returns.
