Sensex vs. Nifty 50: What Each Index Measures and Which to Follow

Sensex tracks 30 companies selected from BSE’s eligible universe; Nifty 50 tracks 50 stocks on NSE. Both use free-float market-capitalization weighting, so larger companies with more shares available to investors have more influence. Neither is universally better: follow the index that matches the exchange and benchmark universe you want to monitor.

What does the Sensex measure?

The Sensex is BSE’s benchmark of 30 constituent companies. Its level reflects the free-float market value of those companies relative to a historical base. BSE’s methodology draws the eligible universe from the BSE 100 and targets 30 constituents, with screening that includes listing history, trading activity, derivative linkage and float-adjusted market capitalization. Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization. BSE’s Sensex overview and its methodology document describe the index and its construction.

The Sensex’s base period is 1978–79, with a base value of 100. Those are calculation reference points, not the index’s current level or a measure of its quality. BSE’s overview provides this historical background.

What does the Nifty 50 measure?

The Nifty 50 is NSE’s broad-market index of 50 stocks, intended to represent important sectors of the Indian economy. NSE Indices says it has used free-float market-capitalization weighting since June 26, 2009; its methodology sets out the fuller eligibility and construction rules. See the Nifty 50 profile and NSE Indices’ methodology.

The Nifty 50’s base period is November 3, 1995, and its base value is 1,000. NSE Indices identifies that date with the completion of one year of operations of NSE’s Capital Market Segment. Like the Sensex base, these are calculation references, not current levels or quality ratings. NSE Indices’ profile gives the details.

How free-float weighting affects both indexes

Free float is intended to capture shares available to investors rather than every share a company has issued. Promoter, strategic and certain other holdings are treated as non-free-float in NSE Indices’ explanation. An investible weight factor is applied to total market capitalization to account for this distinction. NSE Indices’ free-float explanation describes the approach.

Rank #2

Because both indexes use this approach, a company’s influence depends on its float-adjusted size, not simply its share price. Their different constituents and weights mean that they can rise or fall by different amounts over the same period.

Which index should you follow?

  • Follow the Sensex if you want BSE’s 30-company benchmark.
  • Follow the Nifty 50 if you want NSE’s 50-stock benchmark.
  • For a broad reference to Indian large-company market performance, either can serve, depending on your exchange context, data source or existing benchmark.

The choice is about which benchmark universe you want to watch, not a forecast. Constituents and weights differ, so short-run performance can diverge; neither index is established as inherently safer or certain to outperform. Both are indexes, not individual securities or direct investment products.
