Use ApiFlash to capture repeatable screenshots, then compare each new image with an approved baseline using a separate image-diff or screenshot-testing tool. ApiFlash documents screenshot capture; its cited documentation does not establish a built-in visual-diff engine, baseline approval workflow, or CI pass/fail gate.
What ApiFlash does in a visual regression workflow
ApiFlash is the capture step: it renders a URL and returns an image. Visual regression testing adds a second step that compares the new capture with an approved reference, often called a baseline or golden image. Android Developers describes this general screenshot-testing model, but that guidance is not evidence of an ApiFlash integration with Android tooling.
Plan the comparison and approval process separately. Your team chooses the image comparison tool, where baselines are stored, how differences are reviewed, and whether a change blocks a deployment.
Set up a repeatable test
- Choose pages and states. List the URLs that matter and record the state each must show: for example, a signed-in view, an open menu, or a particular content state. Treat desktop and mobile layouts as separate test cases with their own viewport dimensions.
- Create approved references. Capture each case using the same settings you will use in later runs. Store the baseline images in your chosen artifact store or version-control system; ApiFlash’s guides cover downloads and storage-related integrations, but your team selects the baseline repository.
- Capture after a change. Request a new image with the same URL and capture parameters. Prefer the documented
wait_fororwait_untiloptions when suitable; ApiFlash recommends these over a fixed delay for rendering readiness. - Compare and review. Send the new image and baseline to a separate diff or screenshot-testing tool. Review the difference before accepting it as an intended change and updating the baseline.
- Define the gate. Decide which cases run, which differences require human review, and who may approve a baseline update. ApiFlash does not prescribe a universal pixel-difference threshold.
Make captures comparable
ApiFlash accepts GET or POST requests at https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage. Requests require a valid access key and a target URL beginning with http:// or https://. The default response is the image; set response_type=json to receive JSON with links to the resulting screenshot. Documented image formats are JPEG, PNG, and WebP. The documented defaults include a 1920 × 1080 viewport, JPEG output, and a cache TTL of 86,400 seconds. Check the current documentation when configuring a test because parameters and service behavior can change.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Keep all inputs that affect rendering fixed between baseline and comparison runs:
- Target URL and application state.
- Viewport width and height, full-page setting, and any element selector used for a cropped capture.
- Image format and scale factor; ApiFlash documents scale factors of 1 or 2.
- Wait condition and any delay, along with whether the page is scrolled to trigger lazy-loaded content or animation.
- Cache behavior and use of the
freshoption. - Capture environment. ApiFlash’s FAQ says captures use Chrome on Linux and that its system fonts differ from Windows and macOS. A locally generated baseline can therefore differ because of fonts or rendering, even when the application has not regressed. Where possible, create both baseline and subsequent images through the same environment.
The fresh option requests a fresh capture, but ApiFlash’s FAQ cautions that it does not invalidate an existing cached screenshot. Account for that distinction when diagnosing apparently unchanged output.

Call ApiFlash from a test script
This Python example requests a PNG at a fixed viewport and writes the response body to a file. Replace the access key and URL, and confirm the parameter names and required settings in the ApiFlash documentation before using it in CI.
import requests
params = {
"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY",
"url": "https://example.com/",
"format": "png",
"width": 1440,
"height": 900,
"response_type": "image",
}
response = requests.get(
"https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage",
params=params,
timeout=90,
)
response.raise_for_status()
with open("current.png", "wb") as image_file:
image_file.write(response.content)
Use the API’s documented waiting options for your page rather than assuming a fixed timeout means the page is visually ready. Add the returned file to the comparison step in your own test pipeline; this capture call alone does not compare it with a baseline.

Handle quotas, rate limits, and failures
ApiFlash’s current documentation describes a leaky-bucket rate limit of 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400. Requests over the regular rate are delayed; excess beyond the burst can be terminated with HTTP 429. Successful responses expose quota headers, including the quota limit, remaining calls, and reset time. Pace parallel runs and inspect these headers rather than assuming every request will complete immediately. These operational values can change, so verify them in the current documentation.
| Response | Documented meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | Invalid parameters or target cannot be captured | Check the parameter names and values, and confirm the URL includes an HTTP or HTTPS scheme. |
| 401 | Invalid or revoked access key | Check the key configured in the server-side environment and replace it if revoked. |
| 402 | Quota exhausted | Inspect quota headers and the account’s allowance before scheduling more captures. |
| 403 | Requested feature is unsupported on the plan | Check whether the selected capture option is available on the account’s plan. |
| 429 | Rate limit exceeded beyond the burst allowance | Reduce concurrency and pace retries in line with the documented limit. |
| 500 | Capture failure | Check whether the target is reachable and retry cautiously; do not treat a failed capture as a valid comparison image. |
ApiFlash’s FAQ says cached screenshots and failed screenshots do not count toward monthly quota. Handle HTTP failures explicitly so an error body is not mistaken for an image or used to update a baseline.

Secure keys and capture private pages
Do not put a production access key in browser-side code. ApiFlash’s guides describe proxy patterns for Nginx and Cloudflare Workers, as well as authenticated captures using methods such as headers or cookies. Use a server-side proxy when clients must request captures without receiving the API key, and follow the relevant ApiFlash guides for the specific setup.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It captures an image or PDF from one GET request, and parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can ease a switch. For visual regression testing, you would still compare the returned image with your own approved baseline.

Common visual-test problems
- The screenshot looks old: Check cache behavior. The
freshoption requests a fresh capture but does not invalidate an existing cached screenshot, according to ApiFlash’s FAQ. - Images or animations are missing: Use a suitable documented wait condition; consider the documented page-scrolling option for lazy-loaded content or animations. Keep the same timing and state for baselines and later runs.
- Text differs between local and remote captures: Compare environment and fonts. ApiFlash reports Chrome on Linux and different system fonts from Windows and macOS, so generate baselines in a consistent environment where possible.
- A run stalls or fails under load: Check HTTP status and quota headers, lower parallel request volume, and distinguish delayed requests from 429 rate-limit responses.
- The comparison flags a broad visual change: Confirm that viewport, page state, wait condition, image format, scale, and capture environment match before classifying the difference as an application regression.
Cost and planning notes
ApiFlash’s homepage displayed these monthly plans when checked on 2026-10-03: Free at 100 screenshots per month, Lite at $7 for 1,000, Medium at $35 for 10,000, and Large at $180 for 100,000. These are page values checked on that date, not durable pricing guarantees; confirm current terms on the ApiFlash pricing page. Estimate demand from the number of page-state and viewport cases multiplied by the runs in your schedule, then account for retries and review workflows. The FAQ says failed and cached screenshots do not count toward monthly quota.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ApiFlash compare screenshots with a baseline by itself?
Its cited documentation describes capture, not a built-in visual-diff engine or baseline approval workflow. Use a separate comparison step.
Can I set a universal pixel-difference threshold for ApiFlash?
ApiFlash does not document a universal visual-diff threshold; set a comparison and review policy in the separate tool your team uses.
