First determine whether ApiFlash returned an HTTP response or your own client, proxy, or gateway timed out before receiving one. Those are different failures. For a slow render that does return an ApiFlash response, choose a suitable wait_until condition and set wait_until_timeout within ApiFlash’s documented 1–30-second range; if only one late element matters, use wait_for. ApiFlash says it captures whatever has loaded when the page-load wait expires, so a timeout may mean an incomplete screenshot rather than a failed API request.
Start by separating an ApiFlash error from a client timeout
Record the HTTP status, response body, and whether your application received any response at all. Redact access keys from logs. An ApiFlash response gives you a status to diagnose; if there is no response, the deadline may belong to your HTTP library, proxy, load balancer, or gateway rather than the page-render wait inside ApiFlash. ApiFlash’s documentation does not specify one universal timeout value for those caller-side components.

ApiFlash maps common response statuses as follows. For a 400 response, the body includes a meaningful error message, so read it before changing wait settings. See the ApiFlash documentation for its error descriptions.

| Status | ApiFlash meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | Invalid parameters or an uncapturable URL | Correct the parameter values or URL; inspect the response message. |
| 401 | Invalid or revoked access key | Check that the key is current and sent correctly; keep it out of logs and public code. |
| 402 | Monthly quota exceeded | Check quota and usage rather than increasing a timeout. |
| 403 | A requested feature is unsupported by the plan | Remove the unsupported option or check plan eligibility. |
| 429 | Too many requests | Reduce request rate and retry with exponential backoff. |
| 500 | Internal capture failure | Save the timestamp and redacted request details; contact ApiFlash if failures persist. |
Successful responses can include X-Quota-Limit, X-Quota-Remaining, and X-Quota-Reset. ApiFlash also documents a quota endpoint; consult its documentation for the current interface.

Choose the right page-load condition
ApiFlash’s wait_until parameter defaults to network_idle. Its wait_until_timeout defaults to 30 seconds and accepts values from 1 to 30 seconds. If the condition has not been met by the limit, ApiFlash says it captures the page with whatever has loaded so far. A returned image may therefore be incomplete even though the API request completed.
wait_until value |
What it waits for | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
dom_loaded |
The initial HTML document | Use when the markup is enough or ongoing network activity makes network quietness a poor signal. |
page_loaded |
The page and dependent resources | Use when stylesheets, images, or other dependent assets need to be present. |
network_idle |
The page to load and network activity to become idle | Use when network quietness is a sensible indication that the content is ready; it is the default. |
These conditions are not speed guarantees. Try the one that corresponds to what the screenshot must contain, then inspect the captured image. If the target keeps making requests, testing dom_loaded or page_loaded instead of network_idle may avoid waiting for an idle state that never arrives.
Use a selector wait for a specific late element
If the screenshot depends on one known element—for example, a report panel—use wait_for with its CSS selector rather than waiting for every network request to settle. ApiFlash documents that capture aborts with an error if the selector has not appeared after 15 seconds. The selector must match the rendered page, so check its spelling and whether the element is actually present in the page state ApiFlash can access.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
delay serves a different purpose: it adds a pause after the page-load wait, with a maximum of 10 seconds. Use it for a short settling period, such as an animation completing, not as a substitute for a page-load criterion or a selector wait. ApiFlash recommends using wait_for or wait_until where suitable. Parameter limits and behavior are documented in the ApiFlash reference and ApiFlash FAQ.
Check for bot protection, authentication, and rate limits
Bot checks and access restrictions
A slow or failed capture is not necessarily caused by slow loading. ApiFlash’s FAQ notes that bot-protection services such as Cloudflare may block captures. A longer wait does not resolve a block; check whether the site permits automated capture and whether the response indicates an access challenge.
For a login-protected page, provide authentication through a method ApiFlash supports. Its FAQ discusses authenticating normally and passing session cookie values. Do not expose session cookies or other credentials in client-side code or public logs. See the ApiFlash FAQ.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
429 responses and repeated failures
ApiFlash documents a rate limit of 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400 (publication year not stated). Requests above the sustained rate are delayed; requests beyond the burst receive 429. Its documentation also limits repeated identical failed captures to five per hour (publication year not stated). Reduce concurrency or request rate, avoid repeatedly submitting the same failing capture, and use exponential backoff after 429 responses, as advised in the ApiFlash terms of service.

Reduce repeated work with caching
If the same public URL is requested repeatedly, ApiFlash supports a configurable cache TTL; use fresh=true when a new capture is required. Caching can reduce repeated work and pressure on request limits or quota, but it does not make a single slow origin render faster. For a public integration, ApiFlash’s Nginx guide covers proxying, request restrictions, rate limiting, and caching.
When your own HTTP client times out
If the caller reports a timeout but received no ApiFlash status or body, inspect the caller’s configured deadline and the deadlines on any intervening proxy, load balancer, or gateway. Compare those limits with the observed duration of the request. Do not assume that changing wait_until_timeout alone will fix a shorter caller-side deadline; ApiFlash does not publish a universal client timeout setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an ApiFlash page-load timeout always mean the API request failed?
No. ApiFlash documents that it captures whatever has loaded when the page-load criterion reaches its timeout. Check whether you received a response and inspect the resulting image.
