Downloading an offline language is not, by itself, proof that a particular Gboard dictation session stays on-device.
Start dictating with Gboard
- Install or open Gboard on your Android phone or tablet.
- Open an app with a text-entry field and tap the field to bring up the keyboard.
- Tap the microphone on the keyboard toolbar. When prompted, speak your text.
Gboard notes that talk-to-text is not available for every language; some of its instructions apply to Android 7.0 and newer. See Google’s Gboard voice-typing help for its current instructions.

Choose Hindi or English on the keyboard
To switch the active language, first enable the languages offered for your Gboard keyboard. During voice typing, tap the language abbreviation at the lower left of the voice toolbar and select the language you want. Google also describes switching keyboards by holding the space bar in its Advanced voice typing help.
Gboard documents spoken punctuation commands such as “full stop,” “comma,” “question mark,” “new line” and “new paragraph.” Punctuation commands may not be available in every language.

Set up an offline recognition language
For Android 13 and newer, Google documents this path for adding languages for offline recognition:
- Open Settings > System > Language & region > Speech > On-device recognition.
- Tap Add a language and choose a language to download.
This is guidance for preparing offline recognition for Voice Access, not a guarantee that Gboard’s keyboard-microphone workflow will use the same downloaded model. Menu names and availability can differ by phone maker and Android build. See Google’s Voice Access setup instructions.

What offline recognition does—and does not—guarantee
Android provides an optional offline-recognition preference for apps, but the preference defaults to false and recognizer implementations may ignore it. Android Developers cautions: “Depending on the recognizer implementation, these values may have no effect.” The platform can also distinguish between languages already installed on-device, available online, awaiting download or supported on-device but not yet downloaded. Those platform options do not mean the standard Gboard microphone exposes equivalent controls to every user. See the RecognizerIntent reference and RecognitionSupport API reference.

Can Android automatically switch between Hindi and English?
Android’s platform APIs added optional language detection and automatic language-switching intent extras at API 34. This is a capability for recognizer implementations, not a promise that Gboard provides an automatic-switch control in its ordinary keyboard dictation. The behavior can have no effect for a particular recognizer; switching also requires the relevant language models to be downloaded, or the recognizer can return an error.
Google’s Advanced voice typing feature lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish, and says the primary Gboard and device languages must match. Hindi is not on that feature’s published list. This applies to Advanced voice typing specifically; it does not establish that Hindi is unavailable in all Gboard dictation or every Android recognizer. For ordinary Gboard voice typing, enable the Hindi and English languages the keyboard offers and test whether your device handles mixed speech as you need.

Test your Hindi-English dictation on your phone
There is no named Hindi-English accuracy benchmark or word-error rate in the official documentation cited here. Before relying on dictation for longer or important text, try a short sample that includes the Hindi and English words, names and punctuation you commonly use. Check whether the feature recognizes both languages, whether you must select a language manually, and whether it works in the offline configuration you intend to use.
