Latex describes a material, ammonia-free describes an ingredient choice, and fiber-based describes materials that can plug a puncture. A product may fit more than one label, so choose by the exact tire-and-wheel setup, the ingredients you want to avoid, and the manufacturer’s instructions—not by category name alone.
What the labels mean
| Label or formula | What it describes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Latex-based | Latex can coagulate at a puncture to make a repair. Schwalbe describes the result as durable, while noting that latex fluids dry over time. Schwalbe’s tubeless FAQ | Check the product’s top-up and cleaning guidance. Ask separately whether it contains ammonia: latex and ammonia are different formula attributes. |
| Ammonia-free | An ingredient claim, not a complete description of the sealing mechanism. WTB describes its TCS sealant as ammonia-free synthetic latex. WTB’s TCS technology page | If avoiding ammonia is the goal, verify the exact product’s current label and maker documentation. Ammonia-free does not mean latex-free. |
| Fiber- or particle-based | Fibers or particles can mechanically plug an opening. Schwalbe describes this as distinct from latex coagulation. Schwalbe’s tubeless FAQ | Check what fibers or fillers the maker identifies, how the sealant is installed, and how it is maintained. Products in this broad group do not necessarily share ingredients or performance. |
| Combined formula | Some products combine attributes. Pirelli describes P ZERO Sealant as a road-focused product containing ammonia, latex and micro-sealing particles. Pirelli P ZERO Sealant | Read the ingredient and intended-use information rather than treating the labels as separate bins. |
How the sealing mechanisms differ
Latex: coagulation at the puncture
In a latex formula, latex can coagulate where air escapes and form a repair. Schwalbe characterizes this as durable, but also notes that latex fluids dry over time. That means a category label alone does not tell you how often to inspect or replenish a particular product; follow its maker’s care instructions.

Fibers and particles: mechanical plugging
Fiber or particle systems can block an opening by physically lodging material in it. The examples are not identical: Finish Line’s technical information describes a latex-free fiber formula, while Tyre Yogurt describes a latex- and ammonia-free formula using fibers and fillers. Finish Line technical information Tyre Yogurt These are manufacturer descriptions, not evidence that every fiber-based sealant works the same way.

WTB’s example shows why “ammonia-free” should not be read as “latex-free”: WTB describes its TCS sealant as synthetic latex and ammonia-free. WTB’s October 15, 2021 product release says its formula uses an “ammonia-free tackifying process to seal punctures rather than the evaporative effects of many ammonia-based formulas.” WTB’s 2021 product release That is WTB’s explanation of its own product, not a general finding about all ammonia-free sealants.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s first tubeless sealant and the first choice of riders today
- Recommended for all-around use, compatible with all tubeless road, gravel, and mountain bike tires
- Seals punctures up to 6.5mm (¼”)
- Compatible with valve installation using Stan’s Tubeless Sealant Injector
- Remains liquid inside tires for 2-7 months for long-lasting protection)
Match the sealant to the tire and wheel setup
Before buying or pouring in sealant, check the current documentation for the exact tire, rim or wheel, valve, insert and sealant. Compatibility is product- and component-specific. WTB says its sealant is for tubeless-ready tires, rims and valves; Schwalbe advises using wheels approved by their manufacturer for tubeless operation. WTB TCS technology Schwalbe tubeless FAQ
- Tire and wheel: Confirm that both are approved for the tubeless setup you plan to use; do not infer compatibility from the sealant label.
- Valve: WTB explains that a removable valve core enables top-up in its TCS system. This is a useful installation consideration, not a universal requirement for every sealant. WTB TCS 2.0 technology
- Insert and other components: Check their documentation for sealant compatibility and installation requirements.
- Use case: Use the maker’s stated tire type and intended use. Pirelli, for example, identifies P ZERO Sealant for road tubeless/TLR use; that description should not be generalized to every sealant. Pirelli P ZERO Sealant
Install and maintain it by the product’s instructions
Do not assume installation steps are interchangeable. Schwalbe’s guidance for specified Pro One tires calls for Doc Blue and riding after installation so the sealant spreads inside the tire. That is model-specific guidance, not a rule for every tire or sealant. Schwalbe tubeless technology

- Long-lasting latex formula provides superior durability, staying effective for 2-3 times longer than standard sealants to minimize maintenance and downtime. 60-120 days between top-offs.
- Contains advanced nanite particles engineered to rapidly seal punctures up to 1/4" and slices up to 1/2", ensuring reliable performance across a variety of trail and road conditions.
- Developed with eco-friendly, biodegradable ingredients, this sealant offers an environmentally conscious choice without sacrificing sealing performance or safety.
- Optimized for performance in varying temperatures and riding environments, making it an ideal choice for endurance cycling, mountain biking, and gravel adventures.
- Compatible with all major tubeless-ready and UST tire brands and engineered to work across a wide range of rubber compounds. Orange Seal adheres to the tire casing seal punctures to effectively without causing delamination, breakdown, or damage to the rubber, maintaining the integrity and performance of the tire over time.
- Check the tire, wheel, valve, insert and sealant instructions for compatibility and the specified installation method.
- Follow the named product’s directions for amount, application and any required setup steps; do not transfer one manufacturer’s procedure to another product.
- Follow that product’s maintenance, top-up, cleanup and temperature guidance. The available sources do not establish one lifespan or service interval for all formula types.
How to compare puncture claims fairly
WTB’s October 15, 2021 release claims its TCS sealant can repair punctures up to 1/4 inch (6 mm). That is a manufacturer claim for that product, not a standardized comparison or a result that applies to ammonia-free sealants generally. WTB product release, October 15, 2021

- FAST FIX: Quickly seals punctures up to 6.5mm (1/4")
- VERSATILE PERFORMANCE: Recommended for all around use, compatible with road, gravel, and mountain
- LONG LASTING: Remains liquid inside tires for 2-7 months, for long term protection
- EASY INSTALL: Tapered cap allows easy install through the valve stem
- THE ORIGINAL SOLUTION: The world’s first tubeless sealant and the first choice of riders today
When reading any puncture-size figure or test, distinguish the product-specific claim from an independently tested result. Compare test conditions and setup where they are described; do not treat a number from one sealant as evidence for an entire formulation class.
A practical decision checklist
- Concerned about ammonia? Verify the exact product’s current ingredient information. Do not assume it is latex-free.
- Prefer to avoid latex? Look for an explicit latex-free statement from the manufacturer. A fiber-based label by itself does not establish this.
- Want a particular sealing mechanism? Check whether the maker describes coagulation, mechanical plugging, or a combination.
- Using a road, gravel or mountain setup? Confirm that the manufacturer names your tire type and intended use; do not compare products as interchangeable if their stated applications differ.
- Need predictable maintenance? Read the named product’s top-up, cleanup and temperature guidance rather than relying on a category-level lifespan.
- Comparing puncture protection? Separate manufacturer claims from results in an independent test, and note the tested setup.
