You can reuse an old router to improve Wi-Fi coverage by connecting it to your main router with Ethernet and configuring it as an access point (AP). If it has no AP mode, manual setup may work, but you must assign it a suitable LAN address and disable its DHCP server. Exact menus and port choices depend on the router model and hardware revision.
Choose the right way to connect the old router
A wired access point is the most straightforward reuse method when you can run Ethernet from the main router to the old one. In AP mode, the old router turns that wired network connection into Wi-Fi. TP-Link describes this use in its AP setup guide; ASUS likewise describes connecting its router to the existing router over Ethernet to extend wireless coverage in its operation-mode guide.

Other modes are not interchangeable. ASUS Media Bridge mode uses Wi-Fi for the connection back to the router and provides Ethernet connectivity to wired devices such as a TV or game console. A repeater or range-extender mode, where a particular model supports it, retransmits Wi-Fi instead. Check the old router’s manual to confirm which modes it offers and whether they match your setup.
Check your router before setup
- Find the exact model number and hardware revision on the router’s label or in its administration interface.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that model and revision. Look for AP mode or a documented manual configuration method; menu names and features can differ across models.
- Confirm which Ethernet port the instructions specify for the connection to your main router. Do not assume every router uses the same port.
TP-Link directs users to instructions for the correct hardware version, and NETGEAR notes that menu labels can vary by model. Follow the steps for your exact device rather than a guide for a similar-looking router.

Set up the old router in AP mode
- Open the old router’s administration page and select its Access Point (AP) mode, following the manufacturer’s instructions. For example, NETGEAR provides model-dependent steps in its AP mode guide.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the main router to the port specified in the old router’s AP instructions.
- Configure the Wi-Fi settings as directed by the router’s interface, then apply the changes.
- Reconnect to the old router using the vendor’s stated method if needed, and note how to reach its administration page for future changes.
AP mode is designed for this wired access-point role. On ASUS routers, NAT, firewall, and IP-sharing functions are disabled by default in AP mode; behavior on other brands and models may differ.
Configure a router manually if it has no AP mode
Some routers provide no AP-mode switch but can be configured manually. The key is to avoid having both routers hand out network addresses. Linksys documents this approach for the EA6700 in its model-specific user guide; TP-Link also documents manual LAN IP, wireless, and DHCP settings for models without an Operation Mode menu.

- Check the main router’s LAN subnet and DHCP allocation range in its administration settings.
- Choose a free management IP address for the old router in the main router’s subnet, outside the DHCP allocation range. Confirm that the address is not already in use.
- Set the old router to that management address, then disable its DHCP server.
- Configure its wireless settings and connect it to the main router using the port arrangement specified in the old router’s manual.
- Apply the changes and record the management address. You may need that address, or another vendor-specified method, to open the old router’s settings again.
These manual steps are not universal: labels, port usage, and the way you regain access after changing the address vary by model. If the manufacturer does not document a suitable setup for your device, do not assume that a generic set of steps will work.

Choose based on your wiring and the router’s modes
| Setup | Connection back to main router | What the old router does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access point | Ethernet | Broadcasts Wi-Fi from the wired network connection | AP-mode support, required port, and model-specific setup instructions |
| Manual access-point configuration | Ethernet, using the ports specified by the manual | Provides Wi-Fi after LAN addressing and DHCP settings are configured | A free address in the main subnet, outside its DHCP range, and DHCP disabled on the old router |
| Media Bridge | Wi-Fi | Provides Ethernet connectivity to wired client devices | Whether the model supports bridge mode and the intended wired devices |
| Repeater or range extender | Wi-Fi | Retransmits Wi-Fi where the model supports this mode | Model support and its manufacturer’s instructions |
