You can use an old Android phone as a dedicated music player by loading audio files onto it or downloading music inside a streaming app. Local files work offline without recurring service check-ins; streaming downloads give you access to that service’s catalog but remain subject to its membership and offline-playback rules. First check that the phone still works reliably, supports a compatible player, and has enough usable storage.
Choose between local music files and streaming downloads
The right setup depends on whether you already have music files or want access to a streaming catalog. These options store and manage music differently:

Check the phone before setting it up
Compatibility depends on the exact handset, Android release, and app version. Before moving music onto it, check:

- Basic condition: Confirm that it charges, stays on, and has enough usable battery for your intended listening sessions. Age alone does not show whether a battery is safe or how much capacity it retains.
- Android and app support: Check the installed Android version and whether the local player or streaming app you want to use still supports it.
- Storage: Check available internal space and whether the phone has a microSD slot. If using a card, verify the handset’s supported capacity and whether your selected app can store music on it.
- Audio connection: Check for a headphone jack, Bluetooth support for your headphones, or compatibility with the USB-C audio adapter you intend to use.
- File formats: Check the chosen player’s supported formats. Supported formats are not universal across Android: for example, Motorola lists MP3, FLAC, M4A, AAC, AAC+, MIDI, and WAV for one specific phone and software context, not for every Android device. See Motorola’s format information.
Set up a local-file music player
This is the simplest way to play music offline on an old Android phone if you have audio files you are entitled to use. You can choose a local-player app that supports your Android version, or use Spotify’s Local Files feature.
- Choose a compatible player. Install a player that supports the phone’s Android version and your audio formats. If you choose Spotify, its Local Files feature is another way to access supported audio files stored on the device.
- Connect the phone to a computer over USB. Unlock the phone and allow data access if prompted. Use the computer’s file-transfer interface to copy your audio files to the phone. The exact steps and recommended folder can vary by handset and player; follow the player’s guidance.
- If using Spotify, enable Local Files. In Spotify, open Settings and privacy → Apps and devices and turn on Local audio files. Then look in Your Library → Local Files. See Spotify’s Android Local Files instructions.
- Test playback and permissions. If the library does not appear, check where you copied the files, whether the app has the required file permissions, and whether the player supports those formats. Behavior can differ by handset, Android release, app version, and file type.
Set up offline listening in a streaming app
Streaming downloads suit listeners who want a service’s catalog rather than a library of separate files. Install an app that supports the phone, sign in, and check the account’s current download terms before relying on offline playback.

YouTube Music
- Choose an album or playlist and tap Download, or open an individual song’s menu and select its download option.
- Allow the app to download over the connection and storage settings you prefer. The number of items that fit depends on free device space, content length, and audio or video quality.
- Reconnect the phone to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain YouTube Music downloads. The service says Premium is required to download music; podcasts may be downloadable without membership, though some episodes may not support audio-only downloads. Check YouTube Music’s current offline instructions.
Spotify
Spotify’s Android storage setting for downloads appears only when an SD card is available and accessible. Spotify recommends keeping at least 1 GB free on the card. Check the app’s current storage information at Spotify Support. Offline downloads remain managed by Spotify and are not ordinary files you can move into a different player.

A card is optional, not a universal upgrade: use one only if the specific phone has a microSD slot and the player or streaming app can access it. Android distinguishes between two setup choices: portable storage can be moved between devices, while internal or adoptable storage is tied to the phone. Formatting a card erases its data, so back it up first. See Android Help on SD-card setup.

For streaming apps, card support can differ. YouTube Music can use an installed SD card when Use SD card is enabled; otherwise, downloads go to internal memory. Spotify’s Android option is shown only when a card is available and accessible. YouTube Music’s storage instructions are at Google’s YouTube Music Help.

Keep the player simple and reliable
- Use local files when you want an offline library that does not depend on streaming-download availability. Keep a separate copy of your music on a computer or another storage device.
- Use streaming downloads when catalog access matters more than moving music between apps. Confirm the service’s current account terms and any required internet check-ins.
- Before carrying the phone for a long listening session, test the battery, charging, headphones or audio adapter, and playback controls.
- If downloads or files fail to appear, check free space, file location, app permissions, card access, and format support before reinstalling the app or formatting storage.
