The feature requires iOS 17 or later, tvOS 17 or later, and an Apple TV Remote or Siri Remote (second generation or later); it guides you by proximity rather than showing a map location.
Check that your iPhone, Apple TV, and remote are supported
- iPhone: iOS 17 or later.
- Apple TV: tvOS 17 or later.
- Remote: Apple TV Remote or Siri Remote, second generation or later. Apple does not describe the locator as supporting the first-generation remote.
Apple states these software requirements in its lost Apple TV Remote instructions. Availability can vary by country, region, and Apple TV hardware model.

Find the remote from iPhone Control Center
- Open Control Center. On iPhone X or later, swipe down from the top-right corner. On iPhone SE, iPhone 8, or earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Tap Apple TV Remote. If the control is missing, add it using the Control Center customization options for your iOS version. The remote-finding control is inside Apple TV Remote in Control Center, not a general Find My map workflow.
- Choose your Apple TV. Tap the device list and select the Apple TV associated with the lost remote.
- Tap Find beside the remote. Follow the on-screen proximity prompts. As your iPhone gets closer, the circle grows and the status changes from “far” to “near” to “here.”
- Move around if it does not connect. Apple cautions that you may need to move around to establish a connection.
- Tap Close when finished.

What the iPhone locator does—and does not do
The expanding circle and “far,” “near,” and “here” statuses are proximity cues, not a precise map pin. Apple’s instructions do not promise a maximum range, guaranteed connection distance, or that the remote will make a sound. If the connection is not established at first, try moving to another spot and retrying.

If Find is missing or the remote is still lost
Use your iPhone to control Apple TV while you search
For Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, you can set up and use the iPhone’s Apple TV Remote controls to operate the TV device while looking for the physical remote. Apple explains setup in its guide to using an iPhone or iPad as an Apple TV remote.
Check compatibility before replacing the remote
Apple lists a Siri Remote (first generation or later), Apple TV Remote (first generation or later), or Apple Remote as replacement options for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. Apple TV (3rd generation) requires an Apple Remote. Check your Apple TV model and the exact remote generation before buying; compatibility varies by hardware.
