Review model-improvement settings, chat history and deletion, memory, temporary-chat limits, uploads and voice or screen sharing, connected apps, and the rules for your account or workplace. These controls are separate, and turning one off does not necessarily stop other processing or erase copies already retained.
The settings below cover consumer ChatGPT and Gemini as described in official documentation accessed October 3, 2026. Labels and availability can change, and account type, location, and workspace administration may affect what you see.

What to check before sharing anything
- Decide whether the information should go to a chatbot at all. Avoid entering passwords, payment details, confidential business material, or another person’s personal information unless you have authorization and an appropriate service agreement.
- Check model-improvement use. Find the control for whether conversations may be used to improve models. Treat this separately from chat history, deletion, and memory.
- Check what is saved and how to delete it. Locate chat history and activity controls, then read what deletion covers and what may remain for safety, legal, or review purposes.
- Review memory and personalization. A chatbot may retain information to tailor future replies even when a separate model-training control is off.
- Inspect every input and integration. Files, images, audio, video, screens, connected apps, and actions performed by third parties may have different data handling from ordinary text chats.
- Confirm the account context. Personal, business, school, and administrator-managed accounts can have different defaults or controls. Check your organization’s policy when using a work or school account.
ChatGPT: separate controls for training, history, and memory
Model improvement
For a consumer ChatGPT account, OpenAI directs users to Settings → Data Controls and the Improve the model for everyone setting. OpenAI says opting out applies to new conversations. A conversation associated with feedback you submit may still be used to train models, so opting out is not an unconditional promise that no submitted content can be used for improvement. Chat history and memory are distinct from model improvement. OpenAI places memory controls under Settings → Personalization. Review saved memories separately from conversations, and do not assume that deleting a visible chat also deletes every retained copy. OpenAI lists export, account deletion, and privacy requests among available options; the precise effect depends on the request and applicable service handling. Its memory guidance explains the separate personalization control.

Temporary Chat limits
OpenAI says Temporary Chats stay out of chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. OpenAI may nevertheless retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Saving a temporary chat converts it into a regular chat governed by account settings. If a GPT action sends information to a third party, that recipient’s privacy policy applies to the information it receives. Temporary mode therefore reduces some forms of saving and use; it is not equivalent to zero retention or a guarantee that data stays only with OpenAI. Gemini: Keep Activity is not a universal Google privacy switch
Keep Activity and model improvement
Review Google Account → Gemini Apps Activity, including the Keep Activity setting. Google says that when Keep Activity is off, future chats will not appear in Gemini Apps Activity or be used to train its AI models unless you submit feedback. That does not stop Google from using chats to respond or protect the service. Google also says turning off Keep Activity does not turn off other Google settings such as Web & App Activity or Location History. Check those separately if they matter to your use. Activity retention and deletion
When Keep Activity is on, Google says Gemini Apps Activity has an 18-month auto-delete period by default. Users can choose 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. These are retention settings for activity, not a promise that every copy is erased immediately when visible activity is deleted.

Temporary chats and Keep Activity off
Gemini temporary chats, and chats made while Keep Activity is off, are retained with the account for 72 hours to respond, process feedback, and protect users and the service. Google notes that feedback can change how data is used. Its privacy guidance explains that even with Keep Activity off, chats may be handled with help from human reviewers for these purposes. Temporary use is not the same as immediate deletion or a guarantee of no human review.
Uploads, voice, screens, and connected apps need their own review
A text-chat setting may not describe all the information a chatbot receives. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says activity can include files, videos, screens, photos, audio, Gemini Live transcripts, websites, usage, and location details. It also describes a separate control for using audio, video, and screen-share interactions to improve services. Check that control if you use those features.

Connected Apps can exchange chat content and information from your device, location, or connected services. Third-party services may handle received information under their own policies. Before linking an app, granting access, or invoking an action, check what information will be sent, which service receives it, and whether the action will make changes outside the chatbot.

How to compare chatbot privacy settings fairly
There is no single toggle that makes a chatbot private in every sense. Compare services by asking the same questions: Can conversations be used for model improvement? Where is history stored, and what does deletion remove? What remains in temporary mode? Can people review conversations, and does feedback create an exception? Are memory, uploads, voice, screens, or app connections covered by separate controls? Do account type, location, or an administrator change the answer?
