There is no single setting documented here that turns off every AI feature across a phone or computer. Instead, choose the specific feature you want to limit: Apple provides controls for selected iPhone features and its ChatGPT extension, while Microsoft offers per-app Copilot switches and separate privacy settings. The available controls depend on your device, software version, account type, language, and region.
Choose the control that matches what you want to change

Turn off selected Apple Intelligence features on iPhone
Apple’s guide for iOS 27 or later lists separate settings for Messages summaries, Mail summaries and personalized Smart Replies, notification summaries, priority notifications, voicemail suggestions, call context cards, and Journal writing prompts. Use the individual switch for the feature you want to change rather than assuming there is one control for all of them. Apple Intelligence availability depends on compatible hardware, language, and region.
Apple’s documented Screen Time route can restrict access to certain supported features:

- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Open the relevant controls under Intelligence & Siri.
- Restrict access to the listed feature families, such as Writing Tools, image creation features, or Intelligence Extensions.
These restrictions limit access to the listed capabilities; they are not documented as a way to stop every AI-related process on the device. The exact controls require a supported device and may vary by software version.
Disable Apple’s ChatGPT extension on iPhone or Mac
The ChatGPT extension is a distinct control, not the master switch for Apple Intelligence. Apple says the extension is off by default. To check or disable it:

- Mac: go to System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT > Use ChatGPT.
Apple also documents a separate Confirm ChatGPT Requests switch. Turning off the extension and changing request confirmation are different choices. Privacy handling also differs depending on whether you use the extension without an account or sign in: when signed in, your ChatGPT account settings and OpenAI privacy policies apply. For supported desktop versions and personal Microsoft accounts, Microsoft documents an app-specific Enable Copilot checkbox for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Windows and Mac, and for OneNote on Windows. The setting applies only to that app on that device, so change it separately in each relevant app and on each device.

The desktop checkbox described above is not available in the iOS, Android, or web versions of those apps. Microsoft’s instructions describe this control for personal accounts, not work or school accounts.
Outlook uses a separate control
Outlook has a distinct Turn on Copilot toggle. Microsoft lists Outlook for iOS and Android, Mac, web, and new Outlook for Windows, subject to supported app versions. Microsoft says it has no estimated date for this toggle in classic Outlook on Windows. Check the current Outlook guidance for your version rather than expecting the Word or Excel checkbox to apply.

Account privacy settings have wider effects
Microsoft says turning off Copilot through account privacy settings may also turn off other connected experiences, including suggested replies, text predictions, Designer, and automatic alt text. This has a broader effect than the per-app checkbox, so use the app-level setting when your aim is limited to Copilot in one supported app. See Microsoft’s instructions for Copilot controls in Microsoft 365.
Adjust Copilot privacy without disabling the app
Microsoft’s Copilot privacy controls separate personalization and memory from model-training use and advertising settings. Changing these controls can affect how Copilot uses or personalizes interactions; they are not a documented way to turn off Copilot itself.

- Training opt-out: Microsoft says this applies to future conversation activities used to train the identified AI models. It does not exclude conversations from other general product or system improvements, or from advertising, digital safety, security, and compliance uses described in Microsoft’s privacy statement.
- Personalization and memory: These settings address personalization and remembered information, rather than whether the Copilot app is available.
- Shared experiences, chat history, web search, and ad personalization: Microsoft lists these as separate controls. The shared-experience setting does not determine whether ads are personalized.
Review the current Microsoft Copilot privacy controls and the linked privacy explanations for the account you use; the individual settings have different purposes and should not be treated as one off switch.
What these instructions do not cover
These documented controls do not amount to a complete guide for disabling AI across Android, Windows, or macOS. The available Android help information does not establish a general route for disabling Gemini or Android system AI features, and the Microsoft 365 and Apple controls above cover particular apps or features rather than all built-in capabilities.
