YouTube Live’s documented HLS workflow has an encoder push an HLS stream to YouTube’s ingest URL. It does not document a setting for pasting in a remote .m3u8 playlist and having YouTube pull it. To use an existing playlist, you need a relay or encoder that can read that source and separately publish an HLS output that meets YouTube’s ingest requirements.
Source playlist and YouTube ingest are different things
An HLS playlist URL (often ending in .m3u8) describes media for a player to fetch. YouTube’s HLS ingest URL is a destination for an encoder to send media segments. One is an input; the other is an output. Copying a playlist URL into Live Control Room is not the documented way to start a YouTube stream.

The bridge between them must support both ends: fetching or receiving your particular playlist, handling its media format as needed, and pushing a separate, YouTube-compliant HLS stream. YouTube’s instructions do not establish a universal recipe for relaying arbitrary public playlists, or confirm that every encoder listed by YouTube can pull a remote playlist. Verify those capabilities for the exact tool and version you plan to use.
Set up YouTube HLS ingest
- Create an HLS stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, open Stream and create a stream key with HLS selected as the protocol. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
- Copy the Stream URL from Live Control Room. The HLS URL begins with HTTPS, and YouTube says the stream key is included in it. When you use that endpoint, you generally do not enter the key separately; follow your encoder’s instructions if you select a YouTube HLS preset. Copy the live URL from the interface rather than using a hard-coded example.
- Configure the encoder or relay. Set the source to your playlist, if the tool supports that exact source, and set the destination to push HLS to YouTube. Choose the encoder’s YouTube HLS preset if one is available. Confirm it supports the required output rules below; playlist playback support alone does not prove that it can push HLS to YouTube.
- Start the output and verify it. Start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check audio and video, and review stream health. When the preview is ready, click Go live. Keep monitoring stream health while the broadcast runs. YouTube’s general encoder setup guide describes the Live Control Room workflow.
Meet YouTube’s HLS output requirements
YouTube’s HLS setup page specifies these requirements for the stream sent to its ingest endpoint:

These are destination-output rules. A relay may need to remux or transcode the playlist’s media to produce compliant segments. Do not assume the source playlist already meets them.
Choose HLS or RTMPS for the job
HLS is relevant when you need a codec or HDR workflow YouTube supports through HLS but not RTMP. For ordinary live streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS in its RTMPS guidance. HLS sends video in segments, so it has higher latency than RTMP and disables YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option. YouTube’s HLS guide puts it plainly: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.”

If you need HDR over HLS, YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for HEVC, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries, and compatible PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. For the described HLS setup, it says to leave manual resolution off. Check the source and encoder’s actual color metadata rather than inferring it from labels.

Set encoder quality and test before going live
YouTube’s general encoder settings guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use its current bitrate table for the exact resolution and codec; bitrate recommendations depend on both, so one number does not suit every stream.
- Match the output codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate to what your source and encoder can sustain.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the actual program, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Confirm the relay can recover from a source or network interruption, and decide how you will monitor it during the event.
- For an HDR stream, validate the encoded color metadata and the HLS HDR requirements before relying on the preview alone.
YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers stream URLs, keys and latency controls. The exact controls and encoder support can change, so check the current Live Control Room and documentation for your encoder version.

Common failures and what to check
- YouTube never shows a preview: Confirm you copied the HLS Stream URL for the current stream key, selected HLS as the protocol, and configured a push destination—not just a player URL. Check that the relay is actually sending HTTPS POST/PUT output.
- The source plays in a browser but the relay cannot use it: Browser playback does not prove a relay can fetch that playlist. Check source access requirements, playlist format and whether the tool supports remote HLS input.
- The destination rejects or stalls the stream: Check for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with at most five outstanding segments, and no byte-range playlist or unsupported encryption.
- Video arrives but has the wrong color or no HDR: Verify HEVC, 10-bit output, BT.2020 primaries and compatible PQ or HLG metadata against YouTube’s HDR requirements.
- Latency is higher than expected: That is inherent to HLS’s segmented delivery compared with RTMP; YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option is unavailable for HLS. Consider RTMPS if HLS-specific support is not needed.
- The stream is unstable under real program conditions: Re-test using representative audio and motion, check encoder load and network capacity, and monitor stream health rather than relying only on a successful connection.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Using a playlist as the source does not change your responsibility for its contents. Make sure you have rights to stream the video and audio, including any music, and review YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting. A technically valid ingest can still lead to a claim, interruption or other channel consequences if the content is not authorized.
