Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor an upcoming scheduled encoder stream, open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go Live > Manage. Select the scheduled stream, choose Edit, update its thumbnail in the stream details, and save. YouTube’s official guidance does not confirm that you can change a thumbnail in place while a 24/7 broadcast is already live, so treat the scheduled-stream workflow as the documented option—not a guarantee for an active broadcast.
Change the thumbnail on an upcoming scheduled stream
YouTube says stream metadata for encoder and mobile streams can be set during creation or edited from the stream settings page or while scheduling. Scheduled streams appear in Live Control Room’s Manage tab. For a stream that has not started yet, use this path:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create > Go Live.
- Open Manage in Live Control Room.
- Select the scheduled stream and click Edit.
- In the stream details, locate the thumbnail control, upload the image, and save.
YouTube’s help pages document editing scheduled stream details and separately document its general custom-thumbnail workflow; they do not combine every thumbnail-specific click into one procedure. The exact layout may vary, but the relevant stream-editing controls are in the scheduled stream’s details.
What if the 24/7 stream is already live?
YouTube’s published guidance does not explicitly say whether a thumbnail can be changed in place during an active 24/7 broadcast. It also does not establish that every 24/7 stream is treated as one uninterrupted broadcast. YouTube notes that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not settle how a particular long-running stream or its thumbnail behaves.

If you do not see an editable thumbnail in the active stream’s settings, do not assume that changing the stream key or encoder settings will update it. YouTube describes the stream URL and key as the connection between an encoder and the YouTube feed; thumbnail changes are handled through Studio’s thumbnail controls. These are separate documented workflows, and YouTube’s guidance does not say a key change is needed for thumbnail editing. Avoid stopping or restarting a live broadcast solely on the assumption that it is required; confirm the available controls in your Studio stream details first.
Use YouTube’s general custom-thumbnail workflow if needed
YouTube documents this path for a video thumbnail:
- In Studio, open Content.
- Select the relevant video.
- Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file.
- Select the image and click Save.
This is YouTube’s general video-thumbnail workflow, not an explicit confirmation that it changes the thumbnail of an already-live broadcast. For a scheduled stream, use the stream’s Edit details first. YouTube warns that thumbnail changes may take time to appear on the site; a saved change may not be visible to viewers immediately.

Prepare an image that meets YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail guidance recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, saved as JPG or PNG. The listed file-size limit is 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB on mobile. Custom thumbnail uploads require a verified account. See YouTube’s thumbnail requirements and upload instructions before preparing the file, particularly if uploading from a phone.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use a clear image that represents the stream and is appropriate for children.
- Check that important text or faces remain legible when the image is displayed small.
- Keep the image within YouTube’s stated format, aspect ratio, resolution and upload-size guidance.
Does Made for Kids prevent thumbnail editing?
YouTube’s cited thumbnail documentation does not say that setting a stream as Made for Kids blocks thumbnail editing. Do not confuse that with a separate restriction: YouTube says a mobile live-stream Short highlight is unavailable for a stream set as Made for Kids. That highlight feature also has its own requirements, including a qualifying vertical mobile-app stream with chat and a duration from 10 minutes to 12 hours. Those conditions concern Short highlights, not the thumbnail workflow.

If you run the channel continuously
Changing a thumbnail is a YouTube Studio task; a cloud streaming service is not required for that edit. If your separate need is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is for uploaded video, not a camera feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps the YouTube stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
