To build a live-shopping experience, send timed metadata while the channel is live, listen for that cue in the IVS Player, and have your own application resolve it into current product information and a purchase interface.
What Amazon IVS does in a live-shopping stream
IVS ingests, processes, delivers, and plays the video. Its timed-metadata feature lets an application place a cue—such as a product identifier—at a point on the stream timeline. The viewer application receives the cue and decides what to show. AWS documents this mechanism for sending product details during a live-shopping stream: IVS timed metadata.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The rest of the commerce experience is yours to build or integrate: product catalog, current price and stock, product page, cart, checkout, payment, and order handling. Treat a cue as a prompt to look up current product data, not as the authoritative source for price or availability.
Choose the right IVS mode
| Option | Best fit | Latency and audience |
|---|---|---|
| Low-latency channel | A host broadcasts to viewers, with synchronized product callouts. | AWS describes delivery in under five seconds, depending on location and broadcaster settings. Use the IVS Player for the low-latency experience. |
| Real-time stage | Interactive participation where hosts or guests need to communicate with very low delay. | AWS describes stage latency under 300 milliseconds. The real-time overview says stages can accommodate up to 12 hosts and audiences beyond 25,000 viewers, subject to service quotas. |
| Stage broadcast to a channel | Hosts interact on a stage while a wider audience watches the broadcast. | Channel viewers get channel delivery latency, not the stage’s under-300-millisecond latency. |
These are AWS-published capability descriptions, not performance guarantees for a particular deployment. Geography, network conditions, streaming configuration, and quotas matter. See AWS’s low-latency streaming overview and real-time streaming overview.

Build the live-shopping path
- Prepare AWS access and a channel. Follow the IVS getting-started flow to set up an AWS account and IAM, create a channel, configure streaming software, and verify playback. Review quotas and content/viewer controls before production. Treat channel stream keys and IAM credentials as secrets; scope production permissions to the channels and actions the application needs.
- Configure a broadcaster and send video. IVS supports RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest for low-latency channels. You can use the broadcast SDK, console testing, OBS, or other software and hardware encoders. AWS’s setup guide covers smartphone and studio-style configurations; the streaming configuration guide covers ingest and video settings.
- Set an initial encoder profile and test it end to end. H.264 video and AAC-LC audio are listed for low-latency streaming. A two-second keyframe interval is a reasonable getting-started setting. A one-second interval may reduce latency, but can increase adaptive-bitrate changes and buffering risk. Confirm playback with the IVS Player on the devices and networks your audience uses rather than judging only from the encoder preview.
- Design a small, versioned product cue. For example, send a cue type and stable product identifier, with optional display context. This payload shape is application design guidance, not an AWS-prescribed schema. Prefer resolving the identifier against your catalog backend so the viewer receives current price and stock information.
- Insert the cue while the channel is live. You can use the IVS API or the broadcast SDK. The AWS CLI example is
aws ivs put-metadata --channel-arn <channel-arn> --metadata <payload>. Metadata insertion works only while the specified channel is live and requires the relevantivs:PutMetadatapermission. The Android and iOS broadcast SDKs providesendTimedMetadata. See AWS’s metadata insertion guide. - Handle the cue in the viewer. On Web, subscribe to the IVS Player’s
TEXT_METADATA_CUEevent; Android and iOS provide corresponding cue callbacks. Validate and parse the cue, fetch the latest product record from your backend, then update your own product card or other interface. Keep purchasing safeguards in the application; a viewer should not be able to place an order based only on stale stream metadata. - Test replay deliberately. IVS metadata is carried as ID3 tags in video segments and remains available in recorded video. Player cue events can occur during live and recorded playback, so cue-driven UI can also support replays if your application handles catalog changes, expired offers, and current purchase rules. See AWS’s recording documentation.
Latency, synchronization, and recording limits
- Timeline synchronization is not a wall-clock guarantee. AWS says metadata is delivered at the same point relative to the stream across viewers, regardless of latency or geography. Insertion is attempted as soon as possible, but AWS does not guarantee the exact insertion time. Do not promise viewers that a cue will arrive at a particular clock time.
- Use the IVS Player when low latency or timed metadata matters. AWS says third-party HLS players are not supported for achieving IVS low latency. Actual delay varies with geography, network, and streaming configuration.
- Plan for stream duration. The reviewed AWS setup documentation states that streams have a maximum duration of 48 hours and disconnect afterward. Check current service quotas and limits when planning a production schedule.
- Keep a recording fallback if the archive matters. AWS notes that network issues can cause recording data loss and that IVS prioritizes the live stream. A local recording from the streaming tool can provide a separate copy.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Metadata insertion fails | The channel is not live, the channel ARN is wrong, or the caller lacks permission. | Confirm the target channel is actively streaming, verify the ARN, and grant the required ivs:PutMetadata permission. |
| The video plays but the product card never appears | The viewer is not listening for the IVS Player cue event, or the application rejects the payload. | Check the Web TEXT_METADATA_CUE handler or mobile cue callback, validate the payload format/version, and inspect the catalog lookup path. |
| The card appears at the wrong moment or differently across clients | Client-side cue handling, player choice, or network conditions differ. | Use the IVS Player for low-latency behavior and test the full ingest-to-viewer path on target devices and networks. Timeline synchronization does not promise a fixed wall-clock arrival. |
| Viewers see stale stock or price | The UI treats cue data as current commerce state. | Resolve product IDs against the current backend and validate availability and price again during cart or checkout operations. |
| Playback buffers after lowering latency settings | A shorter keyframe interval or network/bitrate constraints may increase buffering or adaptive-bitrate changes. | Compare one- and two-second keyframe settings under representative network conditions; choose the setting that performs reliably for the target audience. |
| A stream ends during a long event | The documented 48-hour stream duration limit may have been reached. | Plan a controlled restart within current service limits and verify the current quota and duration guidance before scheduling. |
Cost and service planning
The AWS material covered here does not establish a specific cost for a live-shopping deployment. Cost depends on region, configuration, viewing volume and duration, and recording or storage choices. Estimate using current AWS pricing tools with your own expected stream and audience rather than relying on a generic figure.
Separately, if your use case is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: it loops uploaded videos in the cloud rather than providing the IVS-powered interactive shopping application described above. It is YouTube-only, not a replacement for IVS commerce cues or a live camera broadcast. See StreamNeo.
