Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use Puppeteer or Playwright to drive headless Chrome through a URL queue: set a viewport, navigate, wait for a page-specific signal that the content is ready, capture the viewport or full page, and close the page. For a batch, begin with sequential processing; add a configurable worker limit only after measuring the workload. Neither the official documentation nor this guide establishes a universal concurrency limit.
Build a reliable screenshot batch with Puppeteer
This runnable Node.js example reads URLs from a JSON file, processes them one at a time, waits for a site-specific readiness selector, and writes numbered full-page PNGs. The selector and example viewport are choices to adapt to the pages you capture; Puppeteer does not prescribe them.
1. Install and prepare input
The example uses Puppeteer 25.12.0 documentation as its reference point. Install the package and create an input file:
npm init -y
npm install puppeteer
mkdir -p screenshots
Save a JSON array of URLs as urls.json:
[
"https://example.com/page-one",
"https://example.com/page-two"
]
Puppeteer’s installation guide says npm i puppeteer downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing and headless shell by default. If your package manager blocks install scripts, that browser download may be skipped; make browser installation an explicit step in your build or deployment process. See the Puppeteer installation guide.

2. Save the capture script
Save this as capture.mjs. Replace [data-screenshot-ready] with a selector that appears only when the content you need has rendered. If the site has no suitable selector, replace that wait with an application-specific readiness check.
import fs from 'node:fs/promises';
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const urls = JSON.parse(await fs.readFile('urls.json', 'utf8'));
if (!Array.isArray(urls) || urls.some((url) => typeof url !== 'string')) {
throw new Error('urls.json must contain an array of URL strings');
}
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const failures = [];
try {
for (const [index, url] of urls.entries()) {
const page = await browser.newPage();
const output = `screenshots/${String(index + 1).padStart(5, '0')}.png`;
try {
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 900 });
const response = await page.goto(url, {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 30000,
});
if (!response) {
throw new Error('Navigation returned no main-resource response');
}
if (!response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`Navigation returned HTTP ${response.status()}`);
}
await page.waitForSelector('[data-screenshot-ready]', { timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: output, fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
console.log({ url, output, status: response.status(), ok: true });
} catch (error) {
failures.push({ url, error: String(error) });
console.error({ url, error: String(error), ok: false });
} finally {
await page.close();
}
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
if (failures.length) {
console.error(`${failures.length} of ${urls.length} captures failed`);
process.exitCode = 1;
}
Run it with:
node capture.mjs
The script isolates failures per URL, closes each page even after an error, and exits unsuccessfully if any capture failed. Output names follow input order; keep a separate URL-to-file manifest if the files must be easy to identify later. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide covers navigation, screenshot capture, and closing the browser; its interaction guide describes waiting for selectors. See Puppeteer Screenshots and Puppeteer Page interactions.
Choose when the page is ready
A successful navigation event does not guarantee that a single-page app, chart, or asynchronously loaded component has finished rendering. In the example, domcontentloaded is only the initial navigation milestone; the subsequent selector wait represents the content needed in the image.
- Prefer a meaningful selector or app signal. Wait for the actual article, chart, result list, or other target content, rather than a generic element present on every page.
- Use a delay only when the page gives no better signal. A fixed delay can waste time on fast pages and still be too short on slow ones.
- Do not treat network idle as proof of readiness. Puppeteer examples show
networkidle2, but persistent polling and background requests can make network state misleading. Playwright explicitly discouragesnetworkidleas a testing readiness criterion and recommends assertions instead. - Plan for deferred content. Full-page capture selects the capture extent; it does not guarantee that lazy images, infinite-scroll sections, delayed charts, or animations have loaded or painted. If those matter, use a page-specific scrolling or readiness procedure and validate the result on representative pages.
Choose capture dimensions and extent
Use a fixed viewport for comparable screenshots, such as visual checks at a standard desktop size. Capture only the viewport when the task concerns the initial screen; choose full-page output when below-the-fold content belongs in one image. Puppeteer supports fullPage and a clip rectangle for a selected region; fullPage defaults to false. Its screenshot options also include output path and type, image quality where supported, and transparent background. See the Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions API.

Playwright also supports full-page screenshots. Its scale setting can produce different output dimensions: css uses one image pixel per CSS pixel, while device uses device pixels and can make high-density captures substantially larger. Select the scale based on the consumer of the images, not just appearance in a browser. See the Playwright Page API.
Scale the batch without guessing at concurrency
Sequential processing is simple and limits simultaneous page work, but it can take longer for large URL sets. A bounded worker pool is a reasonable next step: make the worker count configurable, start low, and measure on representative pages. The official references do not establish a universal batch size, safe tab count, or throughput figure. Do not assume that more tabs always means a faster or more reliable run.
For each capture, record the URL, output path, navigation status, duration, and error category. Set explicit navigation and selector timeouts, and retry only failures likely to be temporary; repeatedly retrying a bad URL or a selector that does not exist wastes resources. When tuning concurrency, watch the host’s memory and CPU use as well as completion time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Playwright when it fits the existing project
Puppeteer and Playwright both provide a practical way to control Chromium for batch screenshots. Choose based on the codebase and team familiarity, browser provisioning needs, readiness primitives, and screenshot options your output requires. Playwright’s documentation includes Chromium usage and screenshot scale controls; Puppeteer’s examples use its browser installation path. The cited documentation does not establish that either library is faster or more accurate for bulk workloads, so benchmark your own representative URLs if that comparison matters.

Troubleshoot common capture failures
- Browser executable missing: install scripts may have been blocked, preventing Puppeteer’s default browser download. Check the install logs and ensure the compatible browser installation step runs in the deployment environment.
- Selector wait times out: confirm the selector exists on that URL and is added after rendering. Some pages may require a different selector or application-specific readiness signal.
- Capture is blank or incomplete: distinguish navigation completion from content readiness. Wait for the target element, and validate lazy-loaded or animated content with the page’s own behavior in mind.
- Some URLs fail while others succeed: retain per-URL errors and statuses rather than marking the whole batch successful. Check the failing URL, HTTP status, timeout, and whether the failure is transient before deciding to retry.
- Large images consume too much storage: use viewport captures when full-page output is unnecessary. In Playwright, choose CSS-pixel scale instead of device-pixel scale when one pixel per CSS pixel meets the downstream need.
- Batch slows or crashes as workers are added: reduce the configurable concurrency and measure CPU, memory, per-URL duration, and failure rate. There is no official universal tab limit for this workload.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its API accepts the parameter names other screenshot APIs use, which can ease switching from an existing integration. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For a single URL, use the API base shown in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Substitute the target URL and your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo to start with the free monthly allowance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a CSS selector to capture only one element?
Yes. Puppeteer supports element screenshots; use the element’s handle screenshot method when the output should be limited to a selected DOM element rather than the viewport or full page.
Can the batch save PDFs instead of images?
Yes, browser automation APIs include PDF generation options; configure the PDF output separately from screenshot capture, including paper size, margins, and page ranges as needed.
Can I capture a page with a different device viewport?
Yes. Set the viewport dimensions before navigation or capture, and use a device preset or custom dimensions appropriate to the page being tested.
