Some Echo models also have built-in radios that act as hubs for specific protocols, but not every Echo supports Zigbee or Thread. Check the exact Echo model and the accessory’s protocol before pairing or buying anything; you may be able to use an Echo you already own.
What “Alexa as a hub” means
Alexa is the control platform: it connects compatible devices in the app, lets you organize them, and provides voice or app controls. The Echo is the hardware. Only certain Echo models include the radio and hub features needed to pair devices directly over protocols such as Zigbee or Thread. Other accessories connect through Wi-Fi, a manufacturer’s bridge, or a manufacturer’s app and Alexa skill.

“Works with Alexa” indicates compatibility with Alexa, not that every Echo can pair with the device directly or that every feature will be available. Amazon’s support varies by Echo model, protocol, device category, and implementation. Check Amazon’s Thread device information and the device maker’s setup instructions for the specific combination you plan to use.
Set up your Echo
- Plug in the Echo and wait for it to start.
- Open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo.
- Select the Echo family that matches your device and follow the on-screen instructions.
Amazon’s Echo setup instructions cover registering the speaker in the app. If your Echo is already set up and online, you can move to adding accessories.

Identify the accessory’s connection type
Before pairing, check the product packaging or manufacturer’s instructions. A device may use Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Zigbee, or Wi-Fi with the manufacturer’s app or Alexa skill. Some products also require a separate bridge. Match the device’s protocol to an Echo that supports it; the Alexa app alone does not add missing radio hardware.
- Matter over Wi-Fi: Pair it in the Alexa app using its Matter QR code or setup code.
- Matter over Thread: You need a Thread-enabled Alexa device online to commission the accessory.
- Zigbee: Direct pairing requires an Echo with a built-in smart-home hub.
- Other Wi-Fi devices: Set the device up in its manufacturer’s app first. You may then need to link the account or enable the maker’s Alexa skill.
Amazon lists the Echo (4th Gen) as a Thread 1.1 Border Router and the Echo Hub among its Thread 1.3 Border Routers. These are model-specific facts, not evidence that every Echo has Thread or supports every Thread device. Confirm the exact model and product requirements in Amazon’s Thread compatibility guidance.

Add the device in the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Tap +, then Add Device.
- Choose the device category and brand, then follow the prompts. Amazon’s general device setup guide describes this flow.
Some devices may appear automatically through Amazon Frustration-Free Setup. For a non-Matter Wi-Fi product, the maker’s app may need to bring it online before Alexa can discover it; account linking or enabling the maker’s skill may also be required.
Complete protocol-specific pairing
Matter
In the Alexa app, go to Devices > + > Add Device > Matter. Scan the device’s QR code or enter its setup code when prompted. For a Matter-over-Thread accessory, make sure a Thread-enabled Alexa device is online first. Amazon advises placing a Matter device within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible hub or device during setup; this is Amazon’s setup guidance, not a universal maximum operating range. See Amazon’s Matter setup instructions.

Zigbee
First confirm the Echo has a built-in hub; Amazon recommends checking for the Zigbee logo. Put the accessory into pairing mode using its manufacturer’s directions, then ask Alexa, “Discover my devices.” Amazon’s guide recommends keeping the Zigbee accessory within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo or another Zigbee device connected to its hub during pairing. See Amazon’s Zigbee setup instructions.
Wi-Fi devices that are not Matter
Connect the accessory in the manufacturer’s app, then follow the maker’s Alexa integration steps. This can involve linking your account or enabling an Alexa skill. Amazon says most Wi-Fi smart-home devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands, so check that your router provides a compatible network. Its Wi-Fi device connection guidance covers setup and troubleshooting.

Organize and test the connection
Once Alexa discovers the accessory, confirm that it appears under Devices and assign it to a room or group if useful. Try a basic command, such as switching a light or plug on and off, and check that the manufacturer’s app still shows the device online. The commands available depend on the device category and its implementation; Amazon’s Matter category documentation maps supported functions to device capabilities and Matter clusters. Its listed categories include lights, plugs, sensors, locks, thermostats, fans, some appliances, and robotic vacuums, but that does not mean every product in a category exposes every function.
Choose a setup that fits your devices
If you are deciding whether to buy an Echo or accessory, compare the device’s protocol with the Echo’s supported radios, whether a separate bridge is required, and which Alexa controls are available for that product. Also consider what happens if internet or cloud services are unavailable. Amazon says local connections such as Matter, Thread, BLE mesh, and Zigbee can enable local interaction; capabilities for BLE-mesh and Zigbee devices may be limited to basic functions. See Amazon’s local-control documentation.

For example, an Echo (4th Gen) is one Amazon-listed Thread 1.1 Border Router, but that does not make it a universal hub for all smart-home products. Verify the precise Echo model, accessory protocol, required bridge, and available functions before purchase. Amazon’s Thread and Matter support information can change, and regional product listings may differ.
Quick Recap
Fix common setup problems
- Alexa cannot discover the device: Make sure the accessory is in pairing mode and follow its manufacturer’s directions. For Matter, use the QR code or setup code. For Zigbee, verify that the Echo includes a built-in hub.
- Matter over Thread will not pair: Confirm that a Thread-enabled Alexa device is online before trying again.
- A Wi-Fi device appears offline: Check the Wi-Fi network shown in Alexa and the router, then test the manufacturer’s app. For a third-party non-Matter device, reactivating its Alexa skill or relinking the account may help. Amazon says Wi-Fi settings can be changed in the Alexa app only for Amazon and Matter devices; see its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
- The device will not join Wi-Fi: Check whether it requires 2.4 GHz, which Amazon says most Wi-Fi smart-home devices use.
