Canned air does not have one expiration date that applies to every product. Check the specific manufacturer’s shelf-life guidance and the can’s condition: Chemtronics and Falcon each state a 10-year shelf life for their dusters, subject to product-specific conditions. A date printed on the can may be its fill date, not an expiration date.
What “canned air” actually contains
Despite the familiar name, an aerosol duster is not a can of ordinary air. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) describes these products as pressurized metal containers holding liquefied gas propellant, released to remove dust and debris. They are also commonly called air dusters or compressed-air dusters.

How long does canned air last?
Shelf life varies by product. Two manufacturers publish 10-year guidance, but neither statement establishes a universal expiration period for all brands or formulas.

Chemtronics says a can with intact, undamaged can and valve can sit on a shelf for as long as 10 years without leaking or spoiling. See the product information and manufacturer FAQ.
- Falcon dusters: Falcon states a 10-year shelf life when properly stored. See Falcon’s product guidance.
Use the stated period only for the product it covers and subject to its storage and condition requirements. For another brand or formula, check its label and manufacturer documentation rather than assuming it shares the same shelf life.

Does the date on the can mean it has expired?
Not necessarily. Falcon says the date printed on the bottom of its can indicates when it was filled with gas, not an expiration date. That interpretation is specific to Falcon; a date on another product may mean something different.
To identify what a date or code means, check the can’s label, product technical data sheet, certificate of conformance, or the manufacturer’s batch-code guidance. Chemtronics says its batch number can identify the manufacture date; for most of its products, its code format is YYDDD, with YY representing the year and DDD the day of the year. Do not apply that format to other manufacturers’ cans.

Should you use an old can?
Consider the product’s stated shelf life, how it was stored, and its physical condition together. An intact can does not automatically need replacing just because it is old, but age alone cannot establish that a can is safe or usable.
- Check the can and valve for rust, damage, leakage, or other signs of compromise.
- Compare the can’s date or batch code with the manufacturer’s guidance for that specific product.
- If the can is rusty, damaged, leaking, or has a compromised valve, do not use it. Follow the manufacturer’s and your local authority’s disposal guidance.
Manufacturers’ shelf-life statements depend on their stated conditions. If you cannot establish the product’s guidance or storage history, do not treat another brand’s 10-year claim as a substitute.

Use aerosol dusters only for dusting
Aerosol duster contents can be deadly if inhaled. Use the product only as directed for removing dust; never deliberately inhale its contents. In an August 2, 2023 statement, CPSC Commissioner Richard L. Trumka Jr. cited 1,115 reported deaths and 28,800 emergency-room visits involving inhalation of 1,1-difluoroethane between 2006 and 2022. Those figures refer to that substance and period, not every aerosol-duster formula or a current annual rate. See the CPSC commissioner’s statement and CPSC safety guidance.

If you need another way to remove dust, electric dusters are one alternative category identified by CPSC. Suitability depends on the particular device and cleaning task; the category alone does not establish that every electric duster is appropriate for every electronic device.
