A travel router can put smart-home devices on a separate subnet, but that does not by itself show that your main Wi-Fi will run faster or feel less congested. In repeater mode, the GL.iNet Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) joins an existing Wi-Fi network and, by default, uses WISP mode to create its own subnet and act as a firewall. That can change which devices can reach one another; whether it helps performance depends on what is actually slowing the network.
What a travel router changes
A travel router connected to your existing Wi-Fi can act as an intermediary for devices that join its own network. GL.iNet’s repeater documentation says the default WISP behavior creates a separate subnet and firewall. Devices behind it are therefore organized apart from clients on the upstream network, subject to the router’s configuration and access rules. See GL.iNet’s repeater setup documentation and its explanation of subnets.

This is a network-separation outcome, not proof that the Wi-Fi radio has less work to do. A separate subnet or SSID can affect reachability and organization, but the cited vendor documentation does not establish that this setup reduced airtime use or improved measured performance. Ubiquiti likewise treats guest Wi-Fi practices and bandwidth management as distinct concerns; the benefit depends on the actual bottleneck. See Ubiquiti’s guest Wi-Fi guidance.

Check whether your current router already has the controls
You may not need another device. TP-Link documents guest-network isolation for Deco systems in router mode, while its Archer C50 user guide describes an IoT network for smart lights and cameras. Those controls are model- and mode-specific: the Archer guide applies to the listed model and manual revision, not every Archer router. GL.iNet’s Router Docs 4 also describe guest and IoT network controls, with availability depending on firmware version.

- TP-Link Deco guest network setup explains the feature in router mode.
- GL.iNet guest network documentation describes guest-network controls.
- GL.iNet IoT network documentation notes firmware-version requirements, including changes associated with v4.5 and v4.8.
- TP-Link Archer C50 user guide describes that model’s IoT network feature.
Look up your exact router model and software version. Compare what it actually allows, rather than relying on labels such as “guest” or “IoT.”
Choose an arrangement based on the controls you need
| Option | What the documentation establishes | What to verify for your setup |
|---|---|---|
| Existing router’s guest network | Deco documents guest isolation in router mode; available behavior depends on model and configuration. | Whether it separates clients from the main LAN, isolates guest clients from one another, and permits the access your controller needs. |
| Existing router’s IoT network | GL.iNet documents IoT network controls with firmware-dependent availability. The Archer C50 guide documents an IoT network for that model. | Supported bands, subnet access rules, client isolation, and whether the feature exists in your model’s current software. |
| Travel router in repeater/WISP mode | GL.iNet says repeater mode can join existing Wi-Fi; default WISP behavior creates a subnet and firewall. The Beryl AX is one documented example. | Whether downstream devices can reach required hubs or controllers, and whether your setup’s actual bottleneck is addressed by separation. |
Useful comparison points include separation from the main LAN, device-to-device isolation, blocking access to the upstream subnet, supported bands, bandwidth limits, and whether the router connects by wired WAN or repeater. These vary by model and software version.

Keep the smart-home control path working
Isolation can also block connections you want. Before moving devices, identify how you control them: a phone app, a local hub, or an automation server may need to communicate with devices across the network boundary. If a guest or IoT setting blocks access to the upstream subnet or isolates clients, that may interrupt local discovery or control. Exact behavior depends on the router and its configuration.
- List the smart devices you plan to move and the hub, phone, or server that controls them.
- Check the router’s settings for guest/client isolation and access to the main or upstream subnet.
- Move a small number of devices first, then test the specific automations and local controls you rely on.
- If control fails, review the isolation and subnet-access rules before moving the rest. Do not disable protections broadly without understanding which access is required.
Where the Beryl AX fits
The GL.iNet Beryl AX, model GL-MT3000, is a pocket-sized AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 travel router. Its documentation lists Ethernet, repeater, tethering, and cellular connection methods, and its package list includes an Ethernet cable. Its repeater mode makes it a concrete option when you want a downstream network without replacing your existing router. The documentation does not establish compatibility with every smart-home controller or a performance gain for a particular home. See the Beryl AX product documentation.

- Travel Sized Design: Conveniently small and light to pack and take on the road, creating Wi Fi network via Ethernet
- Dual Band AC750 Wi Fi: Strong, fast connection for HD streaming on all your devices. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, & obstacles such as walls.

- Flexible Power: Micro USB port to an adapter, portable charger or laptop
- Industry leading 2 year warranty and unlimited 24/7 technical support. Keep your WiFi performing at its best by keeping the firmware updated through the Tether App.
Use a travel router for smart-home devices when its separation controls solve a real access or organization need, or when your current router lacks suitable network controls. If your goal is less congestion, first identify whether the problem is Wi-Fi airtime, signal coverage, broadband capacity, or another bottleneck; a separate subnet alone does not resolve all of those problems.
