How to Use AI to Triage Vulnerability Reports Without Missing Critical Issues

AI can make vulnerability-report intake more consistent, but it should organize evidence and questions—not decide that a security issue is real, severe, or safe to close.

Use AI to organize vulnerability reports, surface missing evidence, and draft follow-up questions—not to decide whether a flaw is real or safe to dismiss. A qualified reviewer must validate the technical claim, assess its risk in context, and make and document the disposition. GitHub’s documented intake workflows similarly present AI suggestions for maintainers to review, not final security judgments.

What AI should—and should not—do in vulnerability triage

An AI assistant can turn an unstructured report into a consistent working record: a summary, affected versions, claimed prerequisites, stated impact, and unanswered questions. It can help route reports for review and make intake more consistent. Its output is a set of hypotheses to check, not evidence that a vulnerability exists or does not exist.

Keep three judgments separate: whether the report was extracted accurately, whether the technical behavior is reproducible, and what priority the validated issue deserves. Confidence in finding a version string does not establish confidence in a security conclusion. GitHub’s AI issue-intake workflow suggests whether an issue is actionable or needs more information and directs maintainers to review the suggestions; it is not a validated vulnerability severity engine. GitHub’s AI issue-triage documentation describes that review-oriented workflow.

A human-reviewed workflow from intake to disposition

  1. Preserve the original report

Retain the reporter’s original wording, attachments, timestamps, affected product or repository, and disclosure channel. Treat submitted text and files as untrusted input. Keep the original available alongside any AI-generated summary; never let a model’s restatement replace the source report.

    • COMPACT SIZE: Measures 3.8 inches tall and 3.3 inches wide, making it a great fit for standard cup holders, desks, and kitchen cabinets.
  2. Ask AI to structure evidence, not rule on the finding

Request a concise summary; affected products, components, and versions; claimed prerequisites and impact; and a list of missing evidence. Require each extracted claim to include a supporting quotation or precise reference to the report. Have the model distinguish what the reporter stated from what it inferred. If a claim cannot be traced to the original, mark it as unverified rather than treating it as fact.

  3. Review focused questions before contacting the reporter

Use AI to identify what a reviewer needs to reproduce and assess the issue: exact version and configuration, steps, expected and observed behavior, prerequisites, and relevant logs or proof. A maintainer should check that questions are relevant and safe to ask before sending them. GitHub’s private vulnerability-report process lets maintainers request more information or open a discussion with the reporter. GitHub’s repository security advisory guidance explains the maintainer workflow.

  4. Validate the technical claim

Check affected code and versions, verify prerequisites and exposure, and reproduce the behavior where feasible. Determine whether the behavior crosses a security boundary and whether the reported impact follows from the demonstrated conditions. A confident summary, severity label, or absence of alarming language is not a substitute for this review.

  5. Assess risk in the deployment context

Consider exploitability, required access or user interaction, the boundary affected, plausible confidentiality, integrity, or availability impact, deployment exposure, and the importance of the affected service. Record unresolved uncertainty. Technical severity and organizational risk are related but not identical: a technically serious weakness may have different urgency depending on exposure and the affected asset, while enterprise objectives and available response options inform risk priority. NIST’s IR 8286B-upd1, published February 26, 2025, addresses prioritizing cybersecurity risk in relation to enterprise objectives and response.

  6. Make and document a human decision

Choose a disposition such as investigate, request more information, accept and coordinate a fix, or close with an explanation. GitHub’s private-report workflow gives maintainers options to accept, request information, or close a report; it says to explain where possible when closing a report as not a security risk. Record the evidence reviewed, reviewer, rationale, AI-assisted fields, and follow-up actions. Apply the same review standard whether a report was written by a person or assisted by AI. GitHub’s guidance on managing repository advisories covers these maintainer decisions.

  7. Connect triage to remediation and disclosure

For an accepted issue, coordinate privately while a fix is prepared, track affected and fixed versions, validate the fix, and publish coordinated information when appropriate. GitHub repository advisories support private discussion and remediation before publication, and recommend adding a fixed version before publishing when possible. GitHub’s publication guidance describes that step. NIST SP 800-216 recommends formal handling and communication of vulnerability disclosure reports; it is federal guidance, so organizations outside federal environments can use it as a process reference rather than assume it is binding. NIST SP 800-216 was published May 24, 2023.

Controls that help prevent a critical report from being dismissed

Require evidence before closing or assigning low priority

Make the reviewer complete a checklist before closing a report or assigning it low priority. If a field is unknown, record that explicitly rather than allowing a polished AI summary to conceal the gap.

  • Attack surface and deployment exposure
  • Reproduction status and steps
  • Demonstrated or plausible impact
  • Relevant configuration and operational context
  • Unresolved contradictions or uncertainty

Escalate when evidence is ambiguous or impact could be severe

Route a report to a security specialist rather than accepting a low-confidence dismissal when evidence conflicts or the claim involves authentication, authorization, remote code execution, sensitive data, broad exposure, or a production boundary. These are practical escalation safeguards: they do not establish that every such report is a vulnerability, but they make an unsupported early dismissal less likely.

Protect confidential submissions

Apply your organization’s confidentiality rules before sending report content to any external AI service. The official guidance cited here does not establish the data-handling terms of a particular model vendor, so evaluate the service and its approved use under your own security and privacy requirements. Minimize the data shared where possible, and do not upload a confidential report merely because an AI tool is convenient.

Evaluate the workflow on resolved cases

Before relying on AI-assisted triage, replay historical reports with known outcomes. Measure missed high-impact findings, incorrect dismissals, escalation rate, time to first useful response, and reviewer corrections. Use those results to adjust prompts, checklists, and routing. The official documentation and guidance cited here do not establish a general AI triage accuracy rate, critical-issue miss rate, or time saved; do not assume the workflow improves any of those outcomes without evaluation.

Keep severity and organizational risk distinct

There is no universal AI-generated score established by the sources cited here. Assess the technical claim on its evidence—exploitability, prerequisites, impact, and affected versions—then consider organizational risk, including deployment exposure, asset criticality, mission or business impact, and response options. NIST IR 8286B-upd1 supports considering priorities in relation to enterprise objectives and response; it does not make a model’s severity label a disposition.

What the guidance establishes—and what it does not

NIST SP 800-216 is titled Recommendations for Federal Vulnerability Disclosure Guidelines. Its abstract states: “Receiving reports on suspected security vulnerabilities in information systems is one of the best ways for developers to become aware of issues.” The report, by Kim B. Schaffer, Peter Mell, Hung Trinh, and Isabel Van Wyk, recommends formal federal processes to accept, assess, manage, and communicate reports. Its federal scope matters: outside that context, treat it as a useful process reference, not automatically as a binding requirement.

NIST’s Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) version 1.1 was published in February 2022. NIST lists version 1.2 as an initial public draft dated December 17, 2025; it is a draft, not a final replacement for version 1.1. NIST SP 800-218, SSDF version 1.1 provides the final publication information. NIST also says AI RMF 1.0 is being revised; it is voluntary guidance, and readers should check its current revision status before relying on it. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework page provides status information.

GitHub’s documented features are examples of maintainer workflows, not proof that the same AI functions are available to every vulnerability disclosure program. Nor do these official process sources compare AI products or demonstrate benchmark performance. Choose tools only after evaluating them against your confidentiality requirements and historical cases.
