Robot vacuums build maps by combining sensor readings with software that estimates the robot’s position as it moves. LiDAR systems measure distances with laser light; camera-based systems use visual features such as windows or picture frames. Both approaches can support route planning, but the hardware and app features vary by model.
What robot vacuum mapping actually does
A robot does not simply take in a finished floor plan. As it travels, it gathers information about nearby boundaries and features, estimates where it is, and uses those estimates to construct or update a map. The combined task of estimating position while building a map is called simultaneous localization and mapping, or SLAM. Different products implement it with laser measurements, camera imagery, or a combination of sensors.

The map gives the robot a representation of the areas it has observed. Its navigation software can use that information to plan a more systematic route and return to known areas. The map is an operating aid, not proof that the robot can identify every object on the floor.

How LiDAR and LDS mapping work
LiDAR—also called LDS, or laser distance sensor/system, in some product materials—sends out laser light and measures its reflections to estimate distances. By collecting measurements as the robot moves, the system can build a picture of nearby boundaries and use them to help determine its location.

For a specific example, Xiaomi says the LDS sensor in its X20 Pro rotates continuously through 360 degrees, measures the relative positions of boundaries and the robot, and determines the robot’s position on its map in real time. That describes this model’s implementation; it should not be taken as a universal specification for all LiDAR vacuums. Xiaomi also says its LDS approach works in low light and is less affected by visual changes such as shadows.
How camera-based mapping works
Camera-based visual SLAM (vSLAM) looks for recognizable visual features in images and tracks how those observations change as the robot moves. iRobot says its vSLAM models use landmarks such as picture frames, windows, ceiling fans, and lights to help establish location.
For those iRobot models, the company recommends adequate lighting because the system needs light to identify and locate landmarks. That is a model-specific consideration, not evidence that every camera-based robot has the same low-light behavior.

What other sensors contribute
The main mapping sensor may work alongside hardware that helps estimate movement or avoid hazards. Vorwerk describes the Kobold VR7 as using a 2D LDS/LiDAR scanner and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) in its mapping system. ECOVACS describes obstacle, cliff, and wall sensors as common sensor roles. These can support motion estimation, edge awareness, and safe obstacle handling, but the exact sensor combination depends on the product.
Mapping and obstacle recognition are related but separate capabilities. A map helps a robot understand room layout and plan where to travel. A front-facing camera or depth sensor may instead be used to recognize or avoid nearby objects; ECOVACS describes camera and RGBD sensor approaches in certain products. Having a map does not, by itself, show how well a vacuum detects small objects.

| Consideration | LiDAR/LDS | Camera-based vSLAM |
|---|---|---|
| What it senses | Reflected laser light used to estimate distances and boundaries. | Visual features or landmarks observed in images. |
| Lighting | Xiaomi says its X20 Pro LDS implementation works in low light and is less affected by shadows. | iRobot says adequate light is needed for its vSLAM models to identify and locate landmarks. |
| Physical design | Sensor placement and resulting robot height vary by model; a general comparison is not established here. | Camera placement and resulting robot height vary by model; a general comparison is not established here. |
| App controls | Room and zone controls depend on the product and its app; Vorwerk describes app-accessible maps and custom zones for the Kobold VR7. | Features differ across product families; iRobot’s mapping guide describes model-dependent options. |
The lighting descriptions above come from manufacturers describing their own implementations; they are not results of an independent head-to-head test. No comparable, independent accuracy or performance statistic is established for LiDAR versus camera mapping, so the technology name alone cannot settle which specific vacuum will map better.

What you can do with the map
On supported models, a companion app may let you label rooms, select rooms to clean, or set clean and keep-out zones. These features are not guaranteed by the presence of a map: they depend on the vacuum, its software, and the app. iRobot’s guide shows mapping features differ across product families, while Vorwerk describes app-accessible maps and custom zones for the VR7.
When comparing models, check the exact product’s room-mapping controls, lighting requirements, and obstacle-avoidance hardware. A broad category label such as “robot vacuum with LiDAR mapping” does not establish a particular model’s accuracy, obstacle recognition, or app functions.
Quick Recap
How to interpret mapping claims
- Check the named model. A manufacturer’s description of one sensor system should not be assumed to apply to every model using the same broad technology.
- Separate mapping from object avoidance. Ask what hardware handles local obstacle recognition, rather than treating the existence of a floor map as evidence of small-object detection.
- Verify app features. Room selection, labels, and custom zones are product-dependent.
- Treat accuracy comparisons cautiously. The available descriptions explain approaches and product features, but do not provide a comparable independent LiDAR-versus-camera accuracy measure.
