How to Use AI for Test Automation: A Practical, Human-Reviewed Workflow

A practical guide to using AI to draft, adapt, and debug tests without trusting generated code blindly. Includes a review checklist, guidance for testing AI-powered products, and a ScreenshotNeo screenshot example.

Use AI to draft or adapt a test, suggest browser locators, or help diagnose a real failure—not to decide on its own that your software is adequately tested. Give it a bounded task, project conventions, requirements, and evidence from the running application. Then verify the behavior and locators, run the test repeatedly, and review the code and dependencies before merging.

What AI can—and cannot—do in test automation

Generative AI is useful as an assistant for focused testing work: drafting a unit or API test, identifying edge cases, adapting an existing test to a code change, proposing browser locators, or interpreting an exception. The output is a proposal, not evidence that the requirement is covered or that the test is correct. Selenium and GitHub both advise checking generated work against the application and project requirements rather than trusting plausible-looking output (Selenium guidance; GitHub guidance).

Keep the task small enough to verify. “Write a test for this requirement and follow these project examples” is more useful than asking a model to automate testing for an entire application. A model may miss important cases, invent APIs, misunderstand constraints, or produce a test that passes for the wrong reason.

A workflow for AI-assisted tests

  1. 1. Choose one requirement or change

    Ask for a bounded deliverable: one unit test, a list of edge cases for a specific function, an API test for a documented response, or a browser scenario for a particular user journey. Include the requirement and relevant project documentation, existing test examples, framework and language, and any conventions the new test must follow. GitHub recommends checking AI output against requirements, project purpose, architecture, and design patterns.

  2. 2. Ground browser tests in the live application

    For browser work, provide access to the running application or have the agent inspect it. Ask for candidate locators, then check that they match the actual page and remain meaningful for the behavior being tested. Selenium’s AI-agent guidance emphasizes verifying locators against the running application instead of inferring them from a description.

  3. 3. Supply failure evidence

    When debugging, share the actual Selenium exception and relevant logs; a screenshot can help when the failure concerns what rendered or where an element appeared. Ask the model to distinguish observed facts from hypotheses and to suggest a minimal next check. An error message is more actionable than “the test is broken,” while logs and screenshots help constrain the diagnosis.

  4. 4. Run the individual test, then repeat it

    Execute the test against the application and inspect what it actually asserts. Fix issues and run it several times before treating it as stable. A single passing run does not rule out timing races or intermittent failures; repeat runs can reveal instability.

  5. 5. Review the change before merging

    Run the relevant suite and static analysis, then compare the test with the requirement. Check that it exercises the intended behavior, uses legitimate APIs, respects project constraints, and does not add questionable dependencies. Investigate any deleted or skipped tests rather than accepting their removal as a fix. GitHub specifically warns that generated suggestions can hallucinate APIs, ignore constraints, contain incorrect logic, or delete or skip tests.

What to inspect in generated test code

  • Assertion quality: Does the test check the required user-visible or system behavior, rather than merely confirming that code ran?
  • Failure meaning: Would the test fail for the regression it is meant to catch? Is the error message useful?
  • Test isolation: Does it depend on uncontrolled state, timing, external services, or execution order?
  • Locator validity: For browser tests, do selectors match the live application and identify the intended control?
  • Project fit: Does the code follow the existing framework, architecture, and conventions?
  • Dependencies and licensing: Are new packages necessary, authentic, and acceptable for the project?
  • Test integrity: Did the proposed change weaken an assertion, delete a test, or mark it skipped instead of resolving the underlying failure?

Do not treat AI output as safe simply because it compiles or passes once. Functional checks, static analysis, dependency and licensing review, and a human code review address different failure modes.

Testing applications that use AI

If the product under test itself uses a model, ordinary feature tests are not enough. OWASP’s AI Testing Guide Version 1.0 organizes assessment across four areas: the AI application, the AI model, AI data, and AI infrastructure. Its suggested cycle is Define Objective → Execute Test → Interpret Response → Recommend Remediation. That is a testing methodology, not a guarantee that a particular tool or test set establishes safety.

Test representative inputs as well as adversarial ones designed to expose failure modes, including prompt injection where relevant. OpenAI recommends evaluating a range of potential inputs because performance can vary across cases, and recommends human review of outputs where possible—especially for generated code. Treat these as safeguards: they do not prove a system is safe or eliminate the need for application-specific controls.

Choosing an AI testing approach

There is no evidence here to rank AI testing vendors or name a universal best tool. Evaluate options against the work your team needs to do:

  • Framework and language fit: Can it work with the test stack already in use?
  • Type of assistance: Does it draft code, interact with a live browser, or evaluate AI application behavior?
  • Access to evidence: Can it inspect real application state and use exceptions, screenshots, or logs?
  • Quality controls: Can your team review changes, repeat runs, and keep existing CI and static analysis gates?
  • Data handling: Check current security and privacy terms for source code, prompts, credentials, and test data before sharing them.
  • Current commercial terms: Verify support, price, and licensing directly for the product and plan you are considering.

A 2024 review by Vahid Garousi, Nithin Joy, and Alper Buğra Keleş reports examining 55 AI-based test automation tools and empirically assessing two selected tools on two open-source projects (study abstract). Those are the scope figures for that study, not a general productivity result or proof that one vendor is superior. The available evidence does not establish broadly generalizable productivity, quality, or cost-savings figures.

Use ScreenshotNeo to capture the live page for review

For browser-test debugging, a screenshot can show what the application rendered at failure time. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request; its clean-shot options accept consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step optional. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server exposes screenshot and page-inspection tools to AI agents.

Or skip the browser setup:

Install the Python requests package if needed, set YOUR_API_KEY to your ScreenshotNeo key, and run this example. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.
