What Are Microbrowsers and How Do They Affect Link Previews?

Microbrowsers are platform-side fetchers that help messaging apps turn shared URLs into preview cards. Learn how they use metadata, why previews vary, and what website owners can control.

A microbrowser is a platform-side fetcher that visits a link shared in a message so the service can build a compact preview card. The term is useful shorthand, not a standardized product name: platform documentation more often says “link preview,” “unfurl,” “embed,” or names a bot such as Discordbot. What appears in the card depends on the platform’s fetch, metadata choices, caching and rendering—not just the tags on your page.

What is a microbrowser?

When someone shares a URL, a messaging or social platform may request that page and related assets, then use the information it finds to create a title, description, image or other preview details. People often call the fetching client a microbrowser because it performs a limited, platform-controlled visit rather than acting like a full browser used by a person.

The label is descriptive rather than a formally standardized product class. Slack describes “classic link unfurling” and “app unfurling”; Discord refers to Discordbot and link previews. The platform’s own terminology is the one to use when configuring or troubleshooting its behavior.

How link previews are assembled

  1. A person shares a URL. Use a fully qualified address, including https:// or http://. Slack says its unfurling requires the protocol.
  2. The platform fetches the page. The request lets the service inspect the linked content. Discord says its fetch is triggered when a link is shared in a message, rather than by continuous site-wide scanning.
  3. The service selects available information. It may read Open Graph metadata and, in Slack’s classic unfurling, X (formerly Twitter) Card metadata. Open Graph defines fields including og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url.
  4. The app renders its own card. The platform decides which fields to show, how to lay them out and whether to use cached material. A page can therefore render differently across services or at different times.

Metadata is a set of hints, not a command to every client. Apple’s Messages guidance also recommends Open Graph metadata, but has additional page setup guidance; follow its specific instructions if Messages is a target.

How Slack, Discord and Apple Messages differ

Platform Documented behavior What it means for site owners and developers
Slack Classic unfurling is the default treatment for links and checks common Open Graph and X Card metadata. An installed Slack app can also handle a link_shared event and return custom content through chat.unfurl. A missing or unexpected preview may reflect page metadata, Slack’s default selection, or an app-specific unfurl handler. Custom handling requires app configuration and permissions.
Discord Discordbot visits a link shared in a message to collect details such as its title, description and image. Discord may temporarily save a copy of linked image or video content and serve that copy through Discord. Expect fetch requests in site logs. A viewer may receive cached media from Discord rather than directly from the original media host.
Apple Messages Apple’s developer technote recommends Open Graph metadata for rich previews and gives additional page setup requirements. Use Apple’s current guidance for Messages; generic tags alone do not guarantee a particular appearance.

How to control the preview for your website

  1. Set accurate, page-specific metadata. Supply the relevant Open Graph fields, including og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Check the protocol reference for field requirements and image details.
  2. Make the shared address complete and fetchable. Include the scheme, such as https://, and ensure both the page and intended preview image can be reached by the platform.
  3. Test the real URL in each service that matters. A successful card in one app does not establish how another app will select metadata or render the page.
  4. Apply platform-specific guidance. For Apple Messages, use Apple’s rich-preview technote rather than assuming the generic metadata recipe is sufficient.
  5. Choose Slack API unfurl controls when posting through Slack. The unfurl_links and unfurl_media settings are separate. Slack says setting both to false prevents crawling and attempted unfurling for that posted message; this is not a universal website switch.
  6. For custom Slack cards, use the app unfurl flow deliberately. Slack documents link_shared and chat.unfurl, with scopes including links:read and links:write. Request only the domains and permissions the app needs.

What preview fetches mean for privacy and security

Expect requests when a link is shared

A preview request is a visit by the platform service, so site operators should account for it in logs, rate limits and access controls. Discord says its bot fetches a URL when it is shared in a message and does not continuously crawl websites on its own.

Discord may proxy linked media

Discord says it may temporarily save linked image or video content and later deliver that copy from Discord’s servers. In that case, the viewer’s IP address is private from the site hosting that media. This does not establish the same protection for other services or for the initial request to the linked page.

Identify bots carefully

Discord’s example User-Agent contains Discordbot/2.0, but Discord cautions that other parts can change and User-Agent strings can be spoofed. For firewall decisions, check the request IP against Discord’s official public IP ranges and recheck those ranges because they can change.

A preview is not a safety check

A 2020 study presented at the Network and Distributed System Security Symposium tested 20 social and messaging platforms; under that study’s conditions, four produced benign-looking previews for malicious resources. That is a historical result for the tested platforms and setup, not a current measurement of every service. Treat a card as presentation, not proof that its destination is safe: inspect the actual domain before opening a link.

A separate research paper archived by the U.S. National Science Foundation describes an unfurl-related Slack confidentiality attack in the configuration it studied. It is a reason to review app permissions carefully, not evidence that every Slack unfurl exposes private messages or that the studied issue necessarily persists unchanged today.

If you need a screenshot of the page to inspect how it looks, you can use ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not control what Slack, Discord or Messages displays in a link preview; it gives you a separate way to capture the page.

One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
