To diagnose an image problem, reproduce it on the published page, inspect the image request in your browser’s Network panel, and follow what the request shows. A missing image usually points to a URL, server response, or hosting issue; a slow image calls for timing and page-load investigation; a blurry or oversized image calls for checking responsive source selection and delivered dimensions.
Start with the published page and reproduce the symptom
Test the live page at the viewport or device where the issue occurs. A local copy may not use the same paths or hosting configuration as the published site. Note whether the image is missing, broken, incorrect, blurry, or merely late to appear. These symptoms can have different causes, so avoid changing compression or markup before you know which one you are investigating. MDN’s website troubleshooting guide recommends checking the published behavior and investigating the request when an image is missing.

Inspect the image request in DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Select the Network panel, reload the page, and filter the request list for image resources.
- Select the affected request. Check its URL, status, timing, response headers, and Preview or response body.
- Compare what the browser requested and received with the asset and behavior you expected.
The Network panel shows actual network activity and HTTP headers, making it a better starting point than guessing from the page alone. See Chrome’s Network panel documentation.
Diagnose a missing, broken, or incorrect image
Check the requested URL and asset
Compare the request path and filename with the intended asset. Watch for incorrect relative paths, misspellings, case differences, or a URL that points somewhere other than the published asset. Confirm that the response is the expected image rather than an error page or a different file.

Read the response, redirects, and cache behavior
Use the request status and response headers to identify an HTTP error or redirect. If the response is successful but the browser still shows the wrong image, check whether caching is serving an older resource and whether the published host is configured to serve the expected file. Fix the cause indicated by the request rather than substituting a new image without evidence.
Diagnose an image that appears slowly
Inspect the request’s waterfall and timing: when it starts, how long it takes to transfer, and what else happens before the image becomes visible. A performance trace adds sequence and page-behavior context when the Network panel alone does not explain the delay. MDN’s performance fundamentals guide describes browser performance tools and suggests reducing a problem to a smaller test case if normal tools do not reveal its source.

For broader page weight context, MDN reports that media accounts for over 70% of bytes downloaded for the average website. That is a broad media figure covering images and video, not an image-only share; the excerpt does not state a year. MDN’s multimedia guidance discusses media and performance.

Compare the displayed slot with the image’s natural dimensions and the device pixel ratio. An image can look correct while transferring far more pixels than the page needs, or appear blurry because the selected asset is too small for its displayed size and pixel density.

When responsive markup is present, inspect srcset, sizes, and any relevant <picture> sources to understand which candidate the browser selected. Chrome’s guidance describes responsive images and image CDNs as ways to serve more appropriately sized image assets: Properly size images.
Choose a remedy that matches the diagnosis
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Responsive image markup | You can generate and maintain image variants and want viewport-aware source selection. | Your team must create and maintain the candidates and markup. |
| Image CDN | You need dynamic image resizing or transformations at request time and a distributed delivery service suits your requirements. | Assess implementation complexity, delivery geography, and operational cost for your site. |
Choose according to how much control you have over the image pipeline, which variants you need, where visitors are located, and the complexity and cost you can support. Chrome describes image CDNs as APIs for transforming images in its image sizing guidance.
