Use an AI chatbot as a research assistant, not as an election authority. It can help you map issues, explain unfamiliar terms, summarize documents you provide, and turn a ballot measure or candidate platform into questions. It can also produce a confident but wrong answer, rely on an outdated rule, confuse one county with another, or repeat synthetic media. For registration, deadlines, polling places, ballot rules, eligibility, and results, open the current state or local election office page yourself—preferably a .gov site—and verify the chatbot’s claim before acting on it or sharing it.
What an AI chatbot is—and is not—for election research
A chatbot predicts a useful-looking response from patterns in its training and, in some products, from documents or web results supplied during the conversation. It does not automatically know which election you mean, whether a rule changed yesterday, or whether a cited page actually supports the sentence it generated. Even a fluent answer can be stale, jurisdictionally wrong, incomplete, or fabricated.

That makes the technology valuable for orientation. You can ask it to define ranked-choice voting, list the main arguments in a proposed tax measure, translate a legal phrase into plain English, summarize a candidate’s platform that you paste into the chat, or suggest questions for a town-hall meeting. The safe boundary is clear: let the model organize information, then let primary documents and election officials establish the facts.

Good uses with a human verification step
- Issue discovery: Ask for a neutral list of topics raised by a race or ballot measure so you know what to investigate.
- Jargon translation: Request plain-language explanations of terms such as canvass, provisional ballot, levy, or constitutional amendment.
- Document summarization: Provide the text of a statute, voter guide, debate transcript, or candidate plan and ask for a structured summary. Check that the summary did not omit exceptions or conditions.
- Question generation: Turn each candidate’s stated policy into the same factual and follow-up questions for every candidate.
- Research organization: Build a checklist of sources, dates, open questions, and claims that still need confirmation.
Uses that require an official source before you act
- Whether you are registered or eligible to vote.
- Registration deadlines, early-voting dates, ballot-return deadlines, and election-day hours.
- Your polling place, drop-box location, accessible-voting options, or mail-ballot instructions.
- Identification requirements, signature rules, curing procedures, and provisional-ballot eligibility.
- Final results, recount status, certification, or claims that voting equipment or databases were hacked.
A chatbot may help you find the right office or phrase a question, but the current state, county, municipal, or other legally responsible election authority is the source to follow. FBI and CISA state: “If you have questions about election security and/or administration in your jurisdiction, rely on state and local government election officials as your trusted sources for election information.”

Why election answers are unusually easy to get wrong
Rules are local and time-sensitive
Voting procedures can differ between states, counties, cities, and elections held on the same date. A response that is correct for one county can be wrong a few miles away. Deadlines and polling locations can also change after a chatbot’s training data or an indexed page was published. Always give the model the country, state or province, county or city, election name, and election date; then verify every operational detail on the authority’s current page.
Fluent text can hide missing evidence
Models often fill gaps with a plausible-sounding answer instead of saying that information is unavailable. A citation badge or list of links is not proof: the link may be old, may describe another jurisdiction, or may not contain the claim attributed to it. Ask for the exact document title, issuing organization, publication or update date, and the passage supporting each factual statement. Open the document yourself.
Synthetic media can impersonate trusted people
The U.S. Department of Justice warns that AI can enable “threats, fraud, and deprivation of the right to vote through disinformation related to the time, place, or manner of elections.” CISA defines deepfakes as realistic synthetic media depicting events that never happened and recommends authentication measures such as signatures, hashing, and watermarks for election information. UK government guidance similarly warns that generative systems can create convincing fake text, images, video, and audio that appear to come from real people.
In an October 2024 warning, FBI and CISA said foreign actors might combine fake personas, spoofed websites, emails, text messages, social platforms, and generative AI to undermine confidence. Their practical advice is to seek trusted official information and verify a reported claim through trusted official sources before sharing it.
How widespread use affects the risk
A 2025 arXiv preprint reports that 32% of surveyed UK respondents used conversational AI for political information in the week before the 2024 election, including 13% of eligible voters. The study describes randomized trials with 2,858 participants. These figures are prepublication evidence from that study, not a universal measure of chatbot accuracy or behavior in every country.

A seven-step workflow for safer chatbot-assisted research
- Define the scope before you prompt. Write down the country, state or province, county or city, election date, and the specific race or ballot question. If you are asking about a mail ballot, include whether you are requesting, completing, returning, or curing it.
- Ask for orientation, not a final instruction. Request a short list of issues, definitions, and questions to investigate. Tell the model to separate facts from interpretations and to identify what it cannot establish.
- Require a source and date for each factual claim. Ask for the issuing organization, document title, publication or update date, and a direct link when available. A bare citation or search snippet is not enough.
- Open the underlying source. Confirm that it is the relevant election office, statute, court filing, candidate document, or reputable nonpartisan organization. Read the page rather than relying on the chatbot’s excerpt.
- Check jurisdiction and election cycle. Make sure the source names the same state, county or city, election, and year. Look for an update date, emergency notice, or superseding rule.
- Cross-check consequential claims. Verify registration status, deadlines, polling places, identification rules, mail-ballot procedures, and results with another authoritative source when possible, such as the state election office and your county office.
- Preserve and report suspicious material. Save the original message, URL, image, video, audio, or screenshot with its date and context. FBI/CISA and Department of Justice guidance supports preserving original communications or media when reporting suspected election crimes. Report through the relevant platform and election or law-enforcement channel rather than amplifying the claim.
How to audit a chatbot answer
Use the following five tests for every answer that could influence your vote or someone else’s.
| Test | What to ask | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Jurisdictional fit | Does this apply to my country, state, county or city, and election date? | The source names the same jurisdiction and election, or the answer clearly says it cannot determine that. |
| Traceability | Are the source, document title, date, and relevant passage identifiable? | You can open the underlying document and find wording that supports the claim. |
| Freshness | Has the source been updated for this election cycle? | The official page shows a current date or an explicit statement that the rule remains in force. |
| Completeness | Does the answer include exceptions, uncertainty, and missing information? | It distinguishes a settled rule from an estimate, interpretation, or unanswered question. |
| Manipulation resistance | Does the message avoid urgency and sensational claims? | It points to primary documents instead of demanding immediate forwarding, donations, or action through an unfamiliar channel. |
If any test fails, treat the statement as unverified. Do not repair a weak answer by asking the same chatbot to reassure you; obtain the document from the responsible authority instead.
Prompts that keep the model in a useful role
Start with a bounded research prompt
Try: “I am researching the [election name] in [jurisdiction] on [date]. Give me five issues to investigate and define any technical terms. Do not tell me how to vote. Mark anything that requires confirmation from an election official.” The explicit boundary discourages a one-sided recommendation and creates a list you can check.
Force claim-level sourcing
For a factual list, ask: “For each claim, provide the issuing organization, document title, publication or update date, the jurisdiction covered, and a direct link. If you cannot verify one of those items, write ‘not established’ rather than guessing.” Then open every source and compare its wording with the summary.
Summarize text you supply
Paste a candidate’s published platform or an official voter guide and ask: “Summarize only this text. Separate direct commitments, stated goals, funding details, and information the document does not provide. Quote the section heading for each item.” This limits the model’s opportunity to import unrelated claims. Still check that the pasted copy is the latest version.

Generate comparable questions
Ask: “Create the same ten factual questions for every candidate in this race. Do not infer an answer from party labels or endorsements. Flag which questions each candidate has not answered.” Send the identical questions and scoring rules to every candidate, then record the original responses and dates.
Challenge a suspicious answer
Use: “List three reasons this answer could be wrong, identify the exact rule or source needed to resolve each one, and state what you cannot determine.” This is a quality-control exercise, not confirmation that the original answer is true.
Comparing candidates without outsourcing your judgment
AI can standardize your process, but it cannot decide which trade-offs matter to you. Begin with the same source set for every candidate: official campaign materials, filed statements, legislative records where applicable, and a reputable nonpartisan voter guide. Keep news analysis separate from a candidate’s own claims.
Build a claim ledger
- Claim: the exact promise or factual statement.
- Source: URL or document title, issuing organization, and date.
- Scope: office, jurisdiction, and time period.
- Status: directly stated, independently documented, disputed, or not established.
- Question: cost, authority, implementation, or evidence still needed.
Ask the chatbot to populate a blank ledger from documents you provide, then inspect each row. Do not let it convert an absence of information into a negative judgment. “No position found in the documents reviewed” is different from “opposes the policy.”
Separate facts, forecasts, and values
A candidate’s vote on a past bill is a factual record. A forecast that a proposal will reduce costs is a prediction. Whether that outcome is desirable is a value judgment. Labeling these categories prevents a model from presenting a forecast as an established result or treating your priorities as objective facts.

Handle disagreements transparently
When sources conflict, preserve both statements, identify who made each one, and look for the underlying law, budget, vote record, or methodology. Ask the chatbot to explain the disagreement only after you have supplied the documents. Report the conflict and the evidence rather than selecting the most confident-sounding answer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a chatbot tell you where and when to vote?
It can help you locate the responsible election office, but it should not be your final authority for a polling place, hours, registration status, identification requirement, mail-ballot deadline, or result. Enter your details directly into the official lookup tool or contact the office using a phone number published on its official site.
Be especially wary of messages that announce a last-minute location change, claim that voting has been postponed, or direct you to a look-alike registration page. Confirm the notice through the official office and a second authoritative channel before taking action. Never provide a chatbot with more personal information than needed to understand a general question; use the government’s secure lookup system for your own registration record.
Recognizing election deepfakes and deceptive messages
Content warning signs
- An official-looking logo, seal, or domain is paired with an unfamiliar address or misspelled organization name.
- The message creates urgency, threatens a penalty, or asks you to forward it immediately.
- A candidate or election official appears to say something that conflicts with their verified statements or normal communication channels.
- Audio has unnatural pauses, clipped consonants, or inconsistent background sound; video has mismatched lip movement, lighting, hands, or reflections.
- A screenshot shows a headline without a functioning article, date, author, or accessible source.
- The claim concerns hacked voter databases, cancelled elections, or secret instructions but offers no primary document.
Verification actions
- Pause. Do not comment, donate, register, or change voting plans from the message alone.
- Find the official website by navigating independently, not by clicking the suspicious link.
- Search the office’s current notices and verified social accounts for the same announcement.
- Compare the media with a full-length recording or transcript from a trusted channel.
- Ask the relevant election office or law-enforcement contact whether the communication is genuine.
- Save the original file and context before reporting it; edited copies can lose useful evidence.
CISA recommends authentication measures including signatures, hashing, and watermarks for election information. Their absence does not prove a file is fake, and their presence does not by itself prove authenticity; treat them as clues within a broader source check.

What election security guidance can—and cannot—tell you
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Cybersecurity Framework Election Infrastructure Profile (2024) is a voluntary, risk-based framework for election equipment and information systems. It helps organizations manage cybersecurity risk; it is not a voter-facing verification service and does not certify a particular chatbot, website, or election result.
Best Value
FBI/CISA guidance is similarly practical rather than partisan: use trusted state and local officials, verify claims before sharing, and be alert to coordinated campaigns using fake identities, spoofed sites, and synthetic media. DOJ’s warning explains why false voting information is a public-safety and civil-rights concern. None of these documents turns a chatbot answer into an official notice.
A worked example: checking a claimed deadline
Suppose a chatbot says your mail ballot must be postmarked by a particular date. Do not copy the date into a group chat. First, restate the jurisdiction, election, and whether the rule concerns requesting, returning, or curing a ballot. Ask the model for the issuing authority and update date. Open the state or county election office page, read the section covering your ballot type, and check whether the deadline is a postmark deadline or a receipt deadline. Look for exceptions for military, overseas, or emergency voters if they apply to you. If the official pages disagree, call the office using its published number and follow the instruction you receive from that authority. Save the page or notice you relied on, including its date, in case the rule changes.
Sharing information without becoming the amplifier
When you share a verified claim, include the primary source, jurisdiction, election date, and the date you checked it. Quote the relevant sentence or provide the document title instead of reposting a chatbot screenshot. If the evidence is incomplete, say exactly what remains unknown. A cautious message such as “The county office currently lists these hours; check the page before travelling” is more useful than a confident uncited instruction.

If someone has already acted on bad information, direct them to the official office promptly; do not argue from the chatbot’s authority.
A compact checklist for every session
- Have I named the exact jurisdiction and election date?
- Am I asking for orientation or a document summary rather than a final voting instruction?
- Does every factual claim have an identifiable source and date?
- Did I open the source and confirm that it covers my jurisdiction and election?
- Did I cross-check any claim about registration, deadlines, locations, ballot rules, eligibility, security, or results?
- Could this be an impersonation, deepfake, spoofed site, or urgent request?
- Before sharing, can I provide the primary source and explain any uncertainty?
The reliable division of labor is simple: let the chatbot help you form questions and organize documents; let current election officials and primary records answer what you must do. That approach preserves the convenience of AI without surrendering your vote to an unverified prediction.
