Use a general-purpose AI chat tool as a transcription, organization and question-drafting assistant—not as a diagnostician, medication calculator, emergency service or medical-device controller. Redact identifying information, preserve units and timestamps, ask for a transcription before interpretation, verify every value against the original device data, and take the result to a qualified clinician. Emergency symptoms, device alarms and explicit instructions from your clinician or the manufacturer always take priority over a chatbot response.
What an AI chat tool can—and cannot—do with device data
A chatbot can make a messy export easier to read. With a blood-pressure CSV, glucose-meter log, pulse-ox table, ECG image or similar file, it can transcribe values, sort a time series, convert units when the conversion is explicitly defined, calculate requested descriptive statistics, explain unfamiliar labels, point out missing context and draft questions for a clinician.

Those are information and preparation tasks. A plausible-sounding answer can still be wrong because the model misread a digit, silently changed a unit, inferred a missing measurement condition or produced a confident explanation from too little data. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes generative-AI risks including “confabulations (or hallucinations) that may appear authentic to users,” unclear intended-use boundaries, limited visibility into third-party foundation models and performance that can degrade in different environments.

| Reasonable use | Unsafe use |
|---|---|
| Transcribe each value, unit, timestamp and label | Diagnose a condition from a handful of readings |
| Organize readings by date, time or device | Start, stop or change a prescription or insulin dose |
| Check a clearly specified unit conversion or arithmetic calculation | Set a pump, cuff, oxygen device, ventilator, CPAP or other therapy device |
| Describe a trend while identifying missing context | Declare that a person is safe because a generic range says “normal” |
| Draft concise questions for a clinician | Delay urgent or emergency care while waiting for a chat explanation |
The FDA’s policy navigator says software that connects to a medical device to control it or analyze its data may fall within medical-device oversight. Its examples include blood-pressure cuffs, insulin pumps, glucose-strip readers and ECG attachments. That regulatory distinction does not make a consumer chatbot a medical device. In practice, keep a general chat tool in the information and appointment-preparation lane.
FDA reported more than 1,600 AI-enabled medical devices authorized for marketing in the United States as of September 2026. That figure covers FDA-authorized devices broadly; it is not a count of consumer chatbots and does not mean a general-purpose chatbot has been authorized to interpret your readings.
Prepare the data before you upload anything
Record the device and measurement context
Make a small note containing the manufacturer, exact model, firmware or companion-app version if shown, measurement type, units, date and time zone. Record whether each value was taken at rest, after exercise, after eating, during sleep, during symptoms or while an alarm was active. Include relevant medication timing without adding unnecessary personal details. Preserve the device’s own reference ranges and flags exactly as displayed.
A number without its unit, timestamp and collection conditions is easy to misread. A pulse-ox value, for example, means something different when it was recorded during a stable resting measurement than when a person was moving or experiencing breathing symptoms. The chatbot cannot recover context that was never recorded.
Minimize and redact
Share the smallest time window and fewest rows that answer your question. Before uploading an image or file, remove or crop:
- name, address, date of birth, email address and telephone number;
- medical-record, account and insurance numbers;
- device serial numbers, QR codes and barcodes;
- faces and unrelated parts of screenshots;
- other people’s information and unrelated clinical records.
Keep the model name, units, timestamps, symptoms, medication timing and manufacturer ranges when they are needed to interpret the readings. Keep the untouched original file locally so a clinician can inspect it later.

Do not assume HIPAA coverage
HIPAA is not a universal privacy label for consumer health or AI applications. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has noted that software and social-media companies can collect large amounts of patient-generated data while operating outside the HIPAA covered-entity framework. A service may therefore receive sensitive data without offering the protections you associate with a hospital portal.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Read the particular service’s current privacy policy and settings before sending health information. Check whether prompts and uploads are retained, whether staff can access them, whether they are used for model improvement, how deletion works, whether data can be exported, what account-security controls exist and whether an offline or local workflow is available. Do not infer compliance from a product’s marketing language or from the fact that it uses encryption in transit.
A six-step workflow for safer AI-assisted review
1. Define a bounded question
Write the practical purpose first. A useful question is: Help me prepare questions for my clinician about this seven-day trend. An unsafe question is: Tell me what disease I have and what dose to take. State the device, measurement, time period and desired output. Ask for a summary, a list of missing context and questions to discuss, rather than a diagnosis or treatment directive.
2. Upload only a redacted, relevant sample
Use a few representative rows or a cropped image instead of an entire health-record export. Include the column headings and units. If the data are in a CSV, retain the original timestamp and time-zone fields. If a screenshot contains an alarm or device status message, include that label; do not crop away information that explains how the reading was obtained.
3. Request transcription before interpretation
Start a separate message with instructions such as:
Transcribe every value, unit, timestamp and label exactly as shown. Preserve the original order. Put uncertain characters in brackets. Do not interpret the readings yet.
Compare the reply line by line with the original export or display. Pay particular attention to decimal points, minus signs, leading zeros, date order, time zone and unit abbreviations. Correct the transcription in the chat or discard the session if it invents a value. Interpretation built on a transcription error is not salvageable by a more detailed prompt.

4. Request bounded analysis and visible arithmetic
After the transcription is verified, ask for a defined output:
Summarize the measured trend without diagnosing. Calculate only these statistics: number of readings, minimum, maximum and arithmetic mean. Show the formula and intermediate values. Separate measured facts from inferences, list missing context, state uncertainty, and draft questions for my clinician. Do not recommend medication changes, device-setting changes or emergency decisions.
Specify the calculation window and handling of missing values. Ask the model to say when a calculation is impossible rather than filling a gap. For unit conversions, name both units and request the conversion formula. Treat an unexplained conversion, rounded result or hidden assumption as a reason to check the work manually.
5. Cross-check the output
Compare the response with the original device export, the manufacturer’s manual and the manufacturer’s app. Reject the conclusion if the tool changes units silently, adds readings, cites a source you cannot verify, confuses a device status with a measurement or gives a confident answer from sparse data. An AI-generated chart is not a replacement for the original file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAlso check whether the device itself marks a result as invalid, out of range, low signal, motion-affected or requiring a repeat. Those flags are part of the measurement context and should not be overridden by a chatbot’s interpretation.
6. Close the loop with a clinician
Bring the original export, a short redacted summary, the device model and units, symptom and medication context, and the AI’s list of uncertainties. Ask:
- Which values matter for this person and this device?
- When should the measurement be repeated, and under what conditions?
- What threshold or device flag requires a routine call, an urgent call or emergency care?
- Could medication timing, activity, food, positioning or device fit affect the readings?
Let the clinician decide what the values mean for you. Follow the clinician’s instructions, the device manual and local emergency guidance over any chat response.

Examples by device type
| Data source | Useful AI task | Context to preserve | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home blood-pressure monitor | Transcribe systolic, diastolic and pulse readings; group by date; identify missing timestamps; draft questions about a seven-day log | Arm and body position, rest period, cuff model and size if known, repeated readings, units and device flags | Do not ask the tool to diagnose hypertension or choose a prescription change |
| Blood-glucose meter or glucose-strip reader | Organize readings around meals or exercise; check arithmetic for a defined average; list missing meal or medication context | Units, date and time, fasting or post-meal status, exercise, symptoms, meter model and error messages | Never use a chatbot to calculate or change an insulin dose |
| Pulse oximeter | Transcribe saturation and pulse values; mark periods of missing or low-signal data; prepare questions about a pattern | Rest or activity, symptoms, probe placement, signal-quality indicators, units and timestamps | Do not let a generic “normal” statement overrule breathing symptoms, an alarm or clinical advice |
| ECG attachment or rhythm export | Transcribe the device’s labels and metadata; organize episodes and symptoms; explain technical terms in the report | Device and app version, strip length, time, symptoms, event markers and the manufacturer’s disclaimer | Do not treat an AI description as a confirmed rhythm diagnosis or clearance to ignore care instructions |
| CPAP, oxygen or other therapy-device log | Explain column names, summarize usage hours or flag missing days for a clinician | Device model, settings as prescribed, mask or sensor events, alarms and the clinical plan | Do not reprogram settings or alter therapy based on chat output |
These examples describe clerical and educational uses only. The same reading can require different action depending on symptoms, history, device validation and the instructions supplied with it.
Privacy and security checks when choosing a chat service
If you have a choice of tools or workflows, compare the following rather than relying on a “medical AI” label:
| Check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Storage and training | Are uploads retained? Are they used to improve models? Can those uses be disabled? |
| Deletion and export | Can you delete an individual conversation and obtain or export your data? |
| Access and security | Is multi-factor authentication available? Who can access prompts, files and logs? |
| Local processing | Can the task be completed offline or on a device that keeps the file local? |
| Model transparency | Does the service identify the model, limitations, update policy and intended use? |
| Sources and uncertainty | Does it show calculations, distinguish facts from inferences and identify uncertainty? |
| Accessibility and cost | Can you use it reliably with your device, and are limits or recurring charges clear? |
| Data preservation | Does the workflow keep the original file, units, timestamps and device metadata intact? |
The Federal Trade Commission’s mobile-health guidance distinguishes software that merely displays or transfers device data from software that interprets it for diagnosis or treatment. That distinction helps explain why a data-viewer app and a clinical decision tool may have different oversight and privacy characteristics. Check the current terms for the specific service you plan to use; policies and controls can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hard boundaries and urgent situations
- Do not use a chat response to start, stop or change a prescription, insulin dose or other treatment.
- Do not use it to control or reprogram a pump, cuff, oxygen device, ventilator, CPAP or other therapeutic device.
- Do not treat a generic reference range as proof that you are safe or that no follow-up is needed.
- Do not delay emergency care while waiting for a chatbot to interpret an image or file.
- Do not upload an entire health record when a few redacted rows answer the question.
If you have severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, follow your local emergency instructions immediately. Examples can include chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, new confusion, signs of stroke or a severe low-glucose episode, but your own clinician’s plan may identify different warning signs. A device alarm or an explicit manufacturer or clinician escalation instruction also takes priority over AI output.
What to do when the answer looks wrong
The transcription contains a wrong digit or unit
Stop. Recheck the original display or export, correct the row and ask for a fresh transcription. Do not ask the model to “interpret despite the error.” If the image is blurry, provide a higher-quality crop or use the device’s downloadable file.

The response gives a diagnosis or treatment instruction
Do not act on it. Restate the task as transcription, organization or question drafting, then take the original data to a clinician. If symptoms are urgent, use emergency services rather than continuing the chat.
The output says the result is normal
Ask which device-specific range, population and measurement conditions support that statement. A generic range may not apply to your diagnosis, pregnancy status, age, medications or clinician-set target. If the model cannot establish those conditions, treat “normal” as an unsupported generalization.
A compact prompt set you can reuse
These prompts keep the tool’s role narrow:
First, list the device manufacturer, model, measurement type, units, timestamps and labels visible in this file. Identify anything missing. Do not interpret yet.
Using only the verified transcription, sort the readings chronologically. Report the number of readings, minimum, maximum and mean for the stated period. Show formulas, preserve units, and label every assumption.
Separate measured facts from possible explanations. Do not diagnose, recommend medication or device-setting changes, or decide whether emergency care is needed. List the questions and missing context I should take to my clinician.
Never paste account credentials, access tokens or unredacted medical identifiers into a prompt. Keep a local copy of both the source data and the final questions.
Why verification matters even when the answer sounds professional
Generative systems predict text; they do not automatically know whether a sensor was fitted correctly, whether a timestamp is in daylight-saving time, whether a device was recalled, or whether your clinician set a personalized target. They may produce a fluent explanation while being unable to observe the patient, validate the device or inspect the full medical record. FDA’s stated approach is to regulate medical devices, including AI-enabled medical devices—not AI as an abstract category—and to focus oversight on software functions whose failure could risk patient safety. A general chat interface should therefore be treated as an assistant around the measurement, not as the authority for diagnosis or treatment.
The safest result is not the most decisive-sounding answer. It is a traceable record: the original values, preserved units and timestamps, a transparent calculation, clearly marked uncertainty and a short list of questions that a clinician can answer in context.
