The key authorizes OBS to send a feed; it does not keep your computer, lecture source, power, or internet connection running. A genuine 24/7 broadcast therefore needs a plan for continuous operation, interruptions, and archiving.
Before you connect OBS to YouTube
Check that the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to live stream. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance rather than waiting until the lecture is due to start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Decide whether this is truly a continuous stream
This OBS workflow is for an encoder feed: OBS sends its current scene to YouTube. It suits a live lecture, a presentation, or another source you can keep running. A stream key does not turn an uploaded video into a continuous broadcast, and it does not make OBS restart or recover by itself. A persistent stream depends on the source, encoder, computer, power, network, and YouTube event settings all behaving as intended.

Under the Stream tab, create a stream or select the one you intend to use. YouTube allows creators to reuse stream settings and create a custom reusable key.
-
Copy both the stream URL and the stream key. The URL is the destination for the encoder; the key identifies and authorizes the incoming feed. YouTube describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream. See YouTube’s stream settings documentation.
If a key is exposed or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in OBS. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key.
Enter the key in OBS and go live
-
Open OBS and open its stream settings. Menu wording varies by OBS version.
-
Select YouTube as the service if that option is available. If you are entering the connection manually, put YouTube’s stream URL in OBS’s server field and paste the key in the stream-key field.

For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room if the event workflow requires that separate publication action. Whether encoder start alone publishes the event depends on the stream’s auto-start and event settings, so verify those settings for the specific stream rather than assuming.
-
When ending a broadcast, stop the encoder and use the event controls in YouTube to end the published stream cleanly. If you intend to resume later, verify how the event behaves before stopping it.

Make a 24/7 lecture stream more resilient
Prepare the source and operating setup
For a local OBS broadcast, the computer and OBS must remain running, the source must continue producing the intended scene, and power and internet access must remain available. Decide who will notice a failure and what they can do to restore the stream. Before relying on unattended operation, test the exact scene, source behavior, encoder reconnect behavior, and YouTube event settings during a non-critical session.

Use a preflight and monitoring routine
YouTube recommends previewing before going live, checking audio and video, confirming the watch page works on desktop and mobile, checking that local archive files are growing when recording, and testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet. These checks can reveal problems; they do not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
-
Confirm the correct source and audio are present in the preview.
-
Open the public watch page on both a desktop browser and a phone.
-
If recording locally, confirm that the recording is actually growing and that storage is available.

-
Test what viewers see if the encoder or network drops, and rehearse how the operator will restore service.
-
Check the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and understand their effect on this event before depending on them.
Plan for latency and DVR
YouTube offers latency choices and DVR. Lower latency can increase buffering, and YouTube notes that it is less important when the streamer is not interacting with viewers. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during the stream. For a lecture intended for study, decide whether interaction matters more than smooth playback and whether viewers should be able to rewind.
Do not assume a 24/7 stream becomes one complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete video. Plan deliberate segments or a separate local recording/archive process, and verify current Studio behavior before launch. The practical options are to end and start planned sessions with an archive plan, or to record locally as a separate copy and monitor storage.
Copyright and lecture-content checks
Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights to every element in the lecture, including slides, clips, music, and any third-party material. A continuous loop or long duration does not remove copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s applicable policies and check that your use of recorded material is authorized; do not assume that educational context alone makes every use permissible. For a recurring stream, keep a record of permissions and replace material if a rights claim or other restriction arises.

Choose the operating approach that fits the lecture
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on a local computer | Live lectures, scene control, screen sharing, and setups with an operator who can keep the source and system running. | The computer, power, network, OBS scene, and recovery process remain your responsibility. |
| Encoder software or hardware | Productions needing screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, or more advanced production control. | YouTube lists third-party encoder products, but says they are not made by YouTube; evaluate the specific option for your needs. More equipment is not required just to enter a stream key. |
| StreamNeo cloud streaming | Uploaded lecture recordings that should play continuously as a YouTube live stream without leaving a home computer on. | It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera or live OBS scene; choose it only if prerecorded playback meets the need. |
YouTube’s encoder information describes OBS-style encoders and lists third-party options, including Gyre for continuous streaming of prerecorded YouTube videos and AWS Elemental MediaLive for broadcast-grade live-video processing. Those are categories to evaluate, not requirements for a basic OBS stream. See YouTube’s encoder information.
No special hardware is required just to configure a stream key. If the lecture includes live speech, a microphone is an optional audio input; YouTube notes that expensive equipment is unnecessary.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the lecture is a recording you want to keep playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
Troubleshooting common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the feed | Wrong stream URL or key, a key copied with an error, or a key that has been reset. | Copy the current URL and key from the intended stream in Live Control Room, replace both values in OBS, and start the encoder again. If the key may have been exposed, reset it first. |
| OBS is sending but the event is not public | The encoder preview and event publication are separate in the scheduled-stream workflow. | Wait for the Live Control Room preview, inspect it, then use Go live if the event requires that action. Check auto-start and event settings for this stream. |
| The stream stops when nobody is present | The local computer, source, OBS, power, or network stopped, or the event ended. | Check the machine and source, restore the encoder feed, and review the event’s auto-stop behavior. Test recovery before the next unattended session. |
| Viewers report buffering | Connection or encoding conditions may be unstable; a lower-latency choice can also increase buffering. | Inspect the encoder preview and playback, check the network and audio/video quality, and consider a less aggressive latency setting if live interaction is not essential. |
| The archive is missing or incomplete | A broadcast exceeding 12 hours is not established as a single complete automatic archive. | Use planned shorter segments and/or a separately monitored local recording, and verify current YouTube Studio archive behavior. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one YouTube stream key again?
YouTube lets creators reuse settings and create a custom reusable stream key. Keep the key private and replace it in OBS if you reset it.
Does OBS need a microphone for a lecture stream?
No. A microphone is only needed if the lecture requires live speech audio; entering the stream key itself does not require additional hardware.
Can OBS guarantee a 24/7 stream?
No. OBS sends the encoder feed, but continuous operation also depends on the source, computer, power, network, YouTube event settings, and a workable recovery plan.
