Start with a simple app or browser window if you do not need a dedicated rig. The key is a prompt you can read without repeatedly looking far away from the lens.
Choose an app, browser prompt, or dedicated hardware
There are two practical approaches: display the script on a separate device or screen near the lens, or use a camera-mounted teleprompter that reflects or displays the text in front of the camera. Teleprompter.com describes both app/browser and hardware approaches: Teleprompter.com.

A hardware example is Elgato Prompter, whose setup documentation covers camera mounting, a computer connection, and Camera Hub. Its XL guide describes beamsplitter glass and a detachable display. Write for speaking, not silent reading. Prefer short, conversational sentences and clear transitions. Divide a longer script into sections or cues so you can find your place again after a pause or interruption. Rehearse from the actual speaking position: a line that looks compact on a laptop can be hard to follow when you are several feet away.

There is no universal ideal script length or scroll speed established for every presenter. Let your natural speaking pace determine the settings, and leave room to pause, explain, or respond if the stream is interactive.
Position and configure the prompt
- Place the text near the lens. Put the phone, tablet, screen, or prompter as close to the camera lens as the setup allows. Position it at eye level where possible, so reading does not require a large downward or sideways glance.
- Make it readable from your normal position. Increase font size until you can read comfortably without leaning forward. Adjust line spacing and brightness for the room and viewing distance. Elgato’s setup guidance also recommends adjusting font size, brightness, and scroll speed; see its quick-start guide.
- Choose a control mode and pace. Begin slowly and read aloud. Reduce the speed if you feel rushed. If your software offers manual scrolling or a follow mode, try those when you need to pause or vary your delivery. OBS Teleprompter documents autoscroll, manual, and follow modes: OBS Teleprompter.
- Check text orientation. Reflective-glass setups may need horizontally flipped text so it reads correctly in the reflection. A prompt displayed directly on a phone or tablet usually does not need that setting. Confirm the behavior in your own setup before streaming.
Set up hardware safely
Follow the manual for your specific camera and prompter rather than assuming mounts are interchangeable. For the Elgato example, the manufacturer documents attaching the appropriate backplate and camera, connecting the prompter to a computer, installing Camera Hub, and adjusting the display. Elgato also describes additional 1/4-inch support mounting as an option when the ball head cannot support the prompter and accessories: Quick Start Guide.

- Check that the camera lens does not touch the prompter glass.
- Confirm the head, stand, and mounting points can support the complete camera-and-prompter assembly.
- Stop if the rig feels unstable; check the product’s load guidance and mounting points before continuing.
- If Camera Hub does not show the expected display, check whether your operating system is extending rather than mirroring the display, then follow Elgato’s support instructions: Elgato support guidance.
Use a teleprompter with OBS
The straightforward arrangement is to keep the prompt on a separate phone, tablet, or dedicated prompter display while OBS captures your camera and other stream sources. That keeps script controls separate from your stream scene. There is no single overlay setup established for all OBS versions. Test the exact arrangement you plan to use; a separate display avoids relying on an overlay recipe that may not fit your system.

Rehearse and test before going live
- Open the final stream scene and position yourself as you will sit or stand on air.
- Read several minutes of the script aloud. Adjust font, spacing, brightness, and scroll pace until you can speak naturally.
- Pause or move the text manually if your software supports it, and check that you can recover your place after a pause.
- Record or preview a short run. Check camera framing, how far your eyes move from the lens, and whether the text is visible without a distracting head movement.
- Confirm the camera, microphone, script controls, and intended stream destination before starting the broadcast.
Platform integrations are specific to the software and can change. For example, one vendor’s feature page lists live workflows for Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and custom RTMP destinations, while noting TikTok Live eligibility is subject to TikTok’s requirements. Verify your app version, account eligibility, stream key, and current platform instructions rather than assuming every integration is available to every account: Teleprompter.com features.
Troubleshoot common teleprompter problems

| Text appears backwards | Check mirror or flip mode. Reflective glass may need flipped text; a screen-only prompt may not. |
| Text is hard to read | Increase font size, adjust spacing and brightness, or move the display closer to your normal viewing position. |
| The text scrolls faster than you can speak | Lower the pace, switch to manual or follow mode if available, or revise dense sentences so they are easier to deliver. |
| Camera Hub shows the wrong display | Check whether the operating system is extending rather than mirroring the display, then follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps. |
| The camera or prompter mount feels unstable | Stop using the rig until you verify its load capacity and mounting points. Add support only if it is compatible with your equipment. |
| Your eyes keep drifting away from the lens | Move the prompt closer to the lens and rehearse again from the final camera framing. |
