A screenshot alone will not become the image in a social media link preview. To show it in the card, capture or prepare the image, make it publicly accessible, and set its URL as the page’s og:image value. Then inspect the shared page URL on the platform and refresh its preview cache after changes.
How social media link previews use images
When someone shares a website URL, platforms generally build a link card from the page’s metadata rather than taking a screenshot of the page. The Open Graph protocol identifies four basic properties for a page: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url (Open Graph protocol). The og:image property points to the image representing the page; capturing an image does not, by itself, connect that image to the link.

Choose and prepare the image
Decide whether the card should show the page itself or a purpose-made social image. A screenshot makes sense when the site’s interface or appearance is what you want people to see. A designed image may make a headline or brand more legible at small card sizes. Keep important details near the center as practical crop-safety advice; platforms may crop the image, and no universal safe-area measurement is established here.
LinkedIn image guidance
LinkedIn’s sharing-module help guidance calls for an image at least 1200 × 627 pixels, recommends a 1.91:1 ratio, and sets a maximum file size of 5 MB. It also says images narrower than 401 pixels display as thumbnails. These are LinkedIn-specific figures, not universal requirements for other networks; check the target platform’s current guidance before choosing dimensions. LinkedIn also cautions that an image may fail to appear if its crawler cannot retrieve it or if it is stored in a protected directory (LinkedIn sharing-module guidance).

Capture, host, and attach the screenshot
- Capture or create the image. Use your device’s screenshot function or an image editor. Export a format and dimensions suitable for the platform where you plan to share the page.
- Put it at a public image URL. The social platform must be able to fetch the image without signing in. Check that the file is not behind authentication, access restrictions, or a protected directory.
- Add Open Graph metadata to the page’s HTML head. Set
og:title,og:type,og:image, andog:url. Addog:descriptionfor the summary. The protocol also supports image width, height, type, and alt-text properties; if you specifyog:image, it says you should also specifyog:image:alt. - Use the canonical page URL when checking. Inspect the exact URL people will share, since the card is associated with the page’s metadata and platforms may cache previews.

Inspect the preview and refresh it after edits
Paste the exact page URL into the target platform’s preview inspector. Check the title, description, selected image, crop, and whether the image loads. A third-party checker can make it convenient to compare expected previews across services, but it does not replace checking the platform’s own view. OpenGraph.io advertises checks and previews for Open Graph and Twitter Card tags across Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack, and Google; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent guarantee of exact rendering (OpenGraph.io).

LinkedIn’s Post Inspector can refresh a URL’s preview. Its refresh applies to new posts; existing posts keep their earlier preview. LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance says to allow 48 hours after changing tags or sharing a URL for cache changes to take effect (LinkedIn Post Inspector and troubleshooting).

- The card still uses a different image: Confirm the page’s
og:imagepoints to the intended file, then refresh the URL with the platform’s inspector. Cached previews can take time to update. - The image does not appear: Open the image URL without logging in and check that the crawler is not blocked. Authentication or a protected directory can stop the platform from fetching it.
- The card shows a thumbnail or awkward crop: Check the target platform’s image requirements. For LinkedIn, images narrower than 401 pixels display as thumbnails; its published guidance recommends 1200 × 627 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio, and no more than 5 MB.
- An existing post still shows the old preview on LinkedIn: Post Inspector refreshes the preview for new posts, not posts already published. Allow up to the 48 hours LinkedIn advises for cache changes after tag or URL updates.
