Best Headphones for Live Streaming: Wired, Closed-Back Picks

Wired, closed-back headphones are the practical default for monitoring beside a live mic. Compare six options and learn what to check before you buy.

For most live streamers monitoring audio beside a separate microphone, start with wired, closed-back headphones. Closed earcups help limit sound reaching the mic, and a wired connection avoids Bluetooth as an added source of monitoring delay. Neither guarantees zero leakage or zero end-to-end latency: fit, listening level, mic position, and the audio interface or software monitoring path matter too.

What matters in headphones for live streaming

Closed-back design and microphone bleed

Closed-back headphones are the practical default when you speak into an open microphone. They help contain headphone audio, but do not eliminate leakage. RTINGS notes that some closed-back models can still leak at high volume; the amount picked up depends on volume, fit, mic placement, and the room. Sennheiser likewise positions its closed-back HD models for recording and monitoring, while its open-back models are aimed at critical listening and mix translation. RTINGS’ podcast headphone guide; Sennheiser HD Series.

Connection and monitoring delay

Wired headphones avoid Bluetooth as a possible added source of monitoring latency, which makes them a safer default when timing matters. Wired does not mean zero latency: the interface, software buffer, monitoring route, and device setup also affect what you hear. RTINGS cautions that Bluetooth latency can interfere with live monitoring. RTINGS.

Fit, sound, and compatibility

  • Comfort: Check headband pressure, padding, earcup space, and whether the fit will remain comfortable through your typical session. Fit can also affect consistency and isolation.
  • Speech monitoring: Clear voice reproduction helps you catch changes in level and articulation. For editing or mixing, consider how bass and treble balance might influence judgments.
  • Plug and impedance: Confirm the connector and whether your computer, interface, mixer, or controller can drive the headphones adequately. Higher-impedance versions may benefit from an amplifier.
  • Serviceability: Replaceable pads and a detachable cable can make wear or cable damage easier to address.

Shortlist: headphones suited to different streaming setups

These options are supported by product specifications and reviews, but they are not all from a dedicated live-streaming comparison. RTINGS’ ranking is for podcast headphones; Shure’s descriptions are manufacturer specifications, not an independent comparison. Check the exact connector and impedance variant before buying.

Model Why to consider it Tradeoff or check
Sennheiser HD 480 PRO RTINGS names it its best tested podcast headphone in its current guide, describing a comfortable closed-back design with low leakage. Its two-sided cable connection offers flexibility. RTINGS says fit adjustment can affect consistency between wears. The ranking concerns podcast headphones, not a dedicated live-streaming test. RTINGS.
Shure SRH840A Shure specifies closed-back circumaural construction, padded comfort for extended use, a balanced response, a detachable locking cable, and a two-year warranty. These are Shure’s product specifications and positioning, not an independent comparative streaming test. Replacement cables and ear pads are listed as accessories. Shure SRH840A.
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO RTINGS and MusicRadar cover it as a closed-back monitoring or podcast option; MusicRadar’s reviewer highlights comfort and isolation. RTINGS notes that the 250-ohm version may benefit from an amp and that high-volume listening can still leak. Versions at 32 or 80 ohms are offered for more direct connection to devices such as laptops. MusicRadar’s reviewer describes a subtle bass bump and emphasized highs that can sound harsh on sibilant material. These are review assessments, not universal outcomes. RTINGS; MusicRadar.
Sony MDR-7506 RTINGS describes clear, detailed voice presentation and notes that an 1/8-to-1/4-inch adapter is included. RTINGS says isolation is weaker than some competing models, and comfort and build are less strong than pricier alternatives. RTINGS.
Audio-Technica ATH-M20x RTINGS includes it as a lower-cost podcast option, describing clear mids and a reasonably comfortable, breathable fit. RTINGS notes it leaks more than the Sony, though not much in its assessment. RTINGS.
Sennheiser HMD 27 A wired, closed broadcast headset with a dynamic microphone, switchable boom side, and ActiveGard peak limiting. Sennheiser aims it at commentators and audio engineers. This is a specialized professional headset, not the default if you already own a separate mic. Check the connector and capsule variant against your interface. Sennheiser HMD 27.

Choose by your recording setup

  • You use a sensitive mic close to your mouth: Favor a closed-back model and monitor at the lowest level that lets you hear clearly. Recheck leakage with your actual mic and placement.
  • You connect straight to a laptop: Check plug compatibility and impedance. The DT 770 PRO’s 32- or 80-ohm versions are more direct options than its 250-ohm variant, which RTINGS says may benefit from an amp.
  • You prioritize replaceable parts: The SRH840A has a detachable locking cable, and Shure lists replacement cables and ear pads.
  • You also edit or mix: Do not assume a headphone that makes speech easy to monitor is neutral for every mixing judgment. Consider its sound profile and compare important decisions on a separate reference if needed.
  • You want commentary mic and headphones together: The HMD 27 integrates a dynamic microphone, but confirm that the specific connector and capsule variant works with your equipment.

Set up and check your monitoring

  1. Match the connection: Identify your device’s headphone output and the headphone plug. Use an appropriate adapter if needed, and check that the device can drive the selected impedance.
  2. Route monitoring deliberately: In your interface or streaming software, choose the intended headphone output and monitoring path. The exact controls vary by equipment; keep software and interface monitoring settings consistent to avoid confusing duplicate or delayed monitoring.
  3. Set a comfortable level: Raise the headphone level only enough to hear your voice and other audio. Louder playback increases the chance that the mic will pick up headphone leakage.
  4. Record a short test: Speak at your normal distance and volume, with the headphones in their usual position. Listen back for headphone bleed, distortion, and an uncomfortable echo or delay before going live.
  5. Adjust the cause you hear: If there is bleed, lower headphone volume, improve the seal or fit, or move the mic and headphones farther apart. If your voice sounds delayed, inspect the interface and software monitoring route and buffer settings; replacing wired headphones alone may not resolve latency generated elsewhere.

Common problems and fixes

  • The mic picks up the program audio: Lower headphone volume first, then check the earcup seal and mic position. Closed-back design reduces the risk but does not guarantee silence.
  • Your voice sounds delayed in the headphones: Check whether you are hearing software monitoring, interface direct monitoring, or both. Review the audio route and buffer configuration; the complete monitoring chain determines delay.
  • The headphones sound too quiet: Check the connector, output selection, and impedance match. A higher-impedance variant may need more drive than your device provides.
  • Sibilants sound unusually sharp: The DT 770 PRO’s high-frequency emphasis is noted by MusicRadar’s reviewer as potentially harsh on sibilant recordings. Try another reference headphone before making permanent EQ or voice-processing changes.
  • Comfort fades during long sessions: Reassess headband pressure, earcup space, and fit. A model praised for comfort by a reviewer may still not suit every head shape.
