1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse Elgato’s OBS integration to put scene changes, audio controls, media actions, and stream start/stop on Stream Deck keys. The Stream Deck is a physical controller, not an uptime system: a 24/7 OBS broadcast still depends on the computer, OBS, internet connection, and YouTube ingest staying available. Set up and test the controls before relying on them, and plan separately for monitoring, recovery, and recording.
What you need before mapping keys
- OBS Studio with your scenes and sources prepared.
- The Stream Deck app and Elgato’s OBS Studio integration. Elgato’s integration article specifies Stream Deck 5.3 or newer and OBS Studio 27.0 or newer for the documented setup; check the current app requirements and device compatibility before installing.
- A Stream Deck device. Choose by how many controls you want visible at once, available desk space, and whether dials would help your workflow. Elgato lists Mini (6 keys), Neo (8), standard Stream Deck (15), XL (32), and Stream Deck + options with dials. The OBS actions are integration features, not unique capabilities of a particular model.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus its stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
The OBS plugin is free and can be installed through Elgato Marketplace or the Stream Deck app. The Stream Deck controls OBS; it does not replace OBS or YouTube Live Control Room.

Set up OBS and Stream Deck controls
- Prepare scenes in OBS. Create and name the scenes and sources you will use. Keep names recognizable on the Stream Deck, especially for a long-running broadcast.
- Install the integration. In the Stream Deck app, install Elgato’s OBS Studio plugin through the app or Elgato Marketplace. Confirm OBS is open and the plugin is available before assigning actions.
- Drag OBS actions onto keys. Add the actions you need, then configure each for the intended scene, source, or operation. Useful controls include a named scene selector, a source mute toggle, a media restart or stop action when a media source is in use, and stream start/stop.
- Account for prerequisites. Preview-to-Program requires OBS Studio Mode. Source visibility controls apply to the currently selected Scene Collection. Check that the chosen collection and scene are the ones used for the live show.
- Make risky actions unmistakable. Label the stop-stream key plainly and keep it away from routine scene changes. Avoid labels that could be mistaken for ordinary navigation.
- Test each key in OBS, then check the program output. Verify that the intended scene, audio, media, and stream action actually occurred. Do not assume a key worked just because its icon changed.
Build a go-live key or Multi Action
A simple stream start/stop key is easier to understand and troubleshoot than a complicated sequence. If you want one press to perform several steps, Elgato Multi Actions can run configured actions in sequence and add delays between them.
- In Stream Deck, place the required OBS actions into a Multi Action in the order you want them to run.
- For example, select the opening scene, allow OBS to settle, start local recording, then start the stream. Elgato’s example also uses recording, a delay, a scene switch, another delay, and stream start.
- Test the sequence repeatedly before using it on air. A delay only pauses between actions; it does not confirm that an earlier action succeeded.
- Keep individual controls available so you can recover if one step in the sequence fails.
Profiles, folders, and pages can separate a live layout from other workflows. Elgato says profiles are specific to the operating system and device type. For an always-on control surface, keep the live profile obvious and avoid automatic app-based profile switching that could hide critical keys while OBS is running.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream, then enter them in OBS’s stream settings as the encoder destination and key. YouTube uses the key to accept the encoder feed; treat it like a password.
- Do not put the key in a Stream Deck label, screen capture, public profile, or other place that could expose it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream again.
- Start the encoder from OBS using your Stream Deck key or OBS controls. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the Live Control Room preview and complete any go-live step required by that stream’s configuration.
- Confirm the stream is visible on its watch page and check playback from another device before leaving it unattended.
Test and monitor before leaving the stream running
YouTube recommends setting up in advance, checking the preview, verifying that local archive files are growing, checking availability on watch pages and mobile, and continuously monitoring audio and video. Run a test stream and verify every Stream Deck key against the actual YouTube output. A controller press alone is not confirmation that viewers are receiving the intended picture and sound.
- Confirm audio is present and at the intended level; check that no source is unexpectedly muted.
- Confirm the right scene and media are reaching the YouTube preview and watch page.
- Check that local recording is writing and its file continues to grow if you need a backup archive.
- Check the stream from another device or network where practical, rather than relying only on the OBS canvas.
What changes when the stream is meant to run 24/7
A Stream Deck key can issue a manual command to OBS. It does not keep the computer powered, restore an internet connection, restart OBS after a crash, monitor the broadcast, or guarantee recovery when YouTube ingest drops. Elgato and YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not establish a universal Stream Deck configuration that guarantees unattended uptime. Before leaving a DIY stream unattended, decide who or what will detect a failure, how power or network interruptions will be handled, how OBS will be restarted, and how audio and video health will be checked.

Plan for YouTube archives and DVR limits
YouTube Help guidance accessed October 3, 2026 says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; for a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including those longer than 12 hours. Do not assume a single 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay or full rewind history. If keeping the full program matters, record locally and plan a deliberate segmentation and archive workflow.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| A key does not change the intended scene | The action targets a different scene, or OBS is using another Scene Collection. | Reconfigure the action for the correct scene and confirm the active Scene Collection in OBS. |
| Preview-to-Program does nothing | OBS Studio Mode is not enabled. | Enable Studio Mode in OBS before using that action. |
| A source remains visible or hidden unexpectedly | Visibility is being changed in a different Scene Collection or for the wrong source. | Confirm the active collection and reselect the intended source in the action. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The stream URL or key is missing, incorrect, or associated with another stream. | Check the selected YouTube stream’s URL and key in Live Control Room and the corresponding OBS stream settings. Keep the key private. |
| A Multi Action starts only part of the workflow | An action failed, OBS had not settled, or the delay was too short; delays do not verify success. | Test each action individually, adjust the sequence, and retain separate recovery keys. |
| The broadcast stops while unattended | Power, network, OBS, or YouTube ingest may have failed. | Use a monitoring and recovery plan that can detect the interruption and restore the encoder or stream. A Stream Deck command by itself does not provide automatic recovery. |
| A long stream has no complete replay or rewind | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive or DVR limits. | Use local recording and segment long broadcasts if a complete archive is required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded video rather than controlling a local OBS session, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not replace a camera-based live broadcast or give you Stream Deck controls for OBS. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
