Cases may use buttons, a configurable dial, or a touchscreen; others only charge and pair the earbuds. Check the model’s manual or companion app before trying gestures, because press counts and functions are not standardized.
First, identify where your earbuds put the controls
Look up the exact earbud model in its manual or companion app and check whether playback and call controls are assigned to the case or the earbuds. A “smart case” is not a universal control standard: a case may handle play/pause, track changes, volume, listening modes, or calls, while another model may put those gestures on the earbuds.

- Case buttons: Find the multifunction button and any separate volume buttons in the model’s instructions.
- Configurable dial: Set the dial’s actions in the companion app before using it.
- Touchscreen: Consult the manufacturer’s current instructions for the available controls.
- Earbud gestures: If the case only charges or pairs, use the earbud touch controls, phone, or supported music app instead.
Set up a configurable case dial
Nothing Smart Dial
Nothing says its Smart Dial has “No function by default.” Configure it in the Nothing X app first, then use the functions you assign. Depending on the setup, the dial can control volume, play or pause, skip forward or back, summon an assistant, answer or reject or hang up calls, mute the microphone, change noise control, or enable Low Lag Mode. Distinguish answering, declining, and ending a call
Call gestures can differ from music gestures, even when they use the same case button. In Audeara’s mapping, one press answers an incoming call, while two presses decline an incoming call or end an active call. Nothing’s Smart Dial can also be configured for call actions, but the actions depend on the functions assigned in Nothing X. Follow your model’s instructions rather than assuming a familiar press pattern will work.

If the case has no music or call controls
Use the earbuds’ touch controls or the connected phone. Microsoft’s Surface Earbuds are an example where gestures are on the earbuds: double-tap either earbud to play or pause, or to answer or end a call; swipe on the left earbud to navigate tracks. Music gestures work with supported apps. The charging case handles charging, pairing, and status rather than those playback gestures. - Interface: Is it buttons, a dial, a touchscreen, or controls on the earbuds?
- Available actions: Does it cover playback, track navigation, volume, and the separate call actions you need?
- Setup: Does the case work immediately, or must you assign functions in an app?
- Wake behavior: Does it enter standby and need a button press before accepting further input?
- App limits: Do playback gestures require a supported music app?
For example, a review by Nikita Achanta in Tom’s Guide, published September 25, 2026, describes the JBL Live Beam 4 touchscreen case as supporting playback and settings control, including functions also available through the earbuds. That is a reviewer’s description, not an official control manual; verify the model identity and current features against the manufacturer’s instructions before relying on a particular gesture.
