Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCheck the specifications and manual for your exact computer or motherboard model, then find the entry for the specific M.2 slot. Look for an explicit interface description: PCIe (used by NVMe SSDs), SATA, or both. “M.2” describes a family of form factors, not the slot’s storage protocol, so the connector’s appearance alone cannot confirm compatibility.
1. Identify the exact computer or motherboard
For a prebuilt PC or laptop, use the system maker’s support page. For a custom-built PC, use the motherboard maker’s page. Check the product label, system information, or motherboard markings to confirm the full model name and, if applicable, its revision. Specifications can differ between revisions or configurations.

2. Find the entry for the specific M.2 slot
Open the official specifications and user manual for that exact model. Search for “M.2,” the slot label (for example, “M.2_1”), “PCIe,” “NVMe,” “SATA,” and “Key M.” Read the slot’s full description and its footnotes; a board can have multiple M.2 slots with different capabilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe interface wording is the key:
- PCIe indicates that the slot supports a PCIe M.2 device, including an NVMe SSD.
- SATA or “SATA mode” indicates support for an M.2 drive using SATA signaling.
- PCIe and SATA indicates that both interface classes are supported, subject to any listed restrictions.
If the manual or specification is unclear, ask the computer or motherboard maker rather than guessing from the slot’s shape or keying. PCI-SIG describes M.2 as “a family of form factors”; the name alone does not specify which storage interface a particular slot supports (PCI-SIG’s M.2 overview).

- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
3. Check size, speed, and platform restrictions
Confirm the supported drive length separately from the protocol. M.2 size codes include 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110; the code gives the module’s width and length in millimeters. Check that the manual lists the drive’s length and that the corresponding mounting point is present.
Also note the slot’s PCIe generation and lane width if listed. These describe the link available to that slot; a motherboard’s highest advertised PCIe generation does not necessarily apply to every M.2 connector. Some slots’ availability or mode also depends on the installed processor.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
4. Read notes about shared resources
Look for footnotes describing shared bandwidth, disabled SATA ports, or restrictions tied to which slots are populated. Installing a drive in one M.2 slot can affect another connection, and the effect may depend on the drive’s operating mode or processor. Record any disabled ports or reduced link widths before choosing a slot or drive.
What official board specifications show
These examples illustrate why the individual slot entry matters; they do not determine compatibility for other computers or motherboards.

| Board and source | Documented M.2 details |
|---|---|
| ASUS PRIME H610M-E D4 (official specifications) | M.2_1 and M.2_2 are Key M slots, both supporting 2242, 2260, and 2280 modules. M.2_1 supports PCIe 3.0 x4 mode; M.2_2 supports PCIe 3.0 x2 mode. |
| ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XII FORMULA (official manual) | M.2_1 supports PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA mode; M.2_2 and M.2_3 support PCIe 3.0 x4 mode. The manual also specifies shared-resource conditions, including a SATA port disabled under a stated M.2 operating mode. |
| ASUS PRIME Z690-P (official manual) | The manual ties M.2_1 availability or mode to processor generation and lists M.2_3 as supporting PCIe 4.0 x4 and SATA modes. |
5. Choose a drive only after checking compatibility
Compare the drive with the slot on all relevant points before buying:
- Protocol: PCIe/NVMe, SATA, or both, as explicitly documented for that slot.
- Physical length: A listed size such as 2280 and a usable mounting position.
- Link details: PCIe generation and lane width, when stated.
- Platform conditions: Processor or configuration requirements.
- Shared resources: Any ports or bandwidth affected by using the slot.
An M.2 NVMe SSD requires a PCIe/NVMe-capable slot. An M.2 SATA SSD requires a slot whose documentation explicitly supports SATA mode. If a slot supports only one of those protocols, the other drive type is not made compatible by having the same M.2 form factor.
