Check the car stereo’s inputs and the CD player’s output first. If both have compatible AUX audio jacks, connect them with a stereo cable that has straight plugs at both ends, select AUX on the stereo, and start playback. If there is no accessible AUX input, check the stereo manual for a model-specific rear input or consider an FM transmitter.
Connect the CD player to a front AUX input
- Check both devices. Confirm that the car stereo has an AUX input and that the CD player has a headphone or line-out jack. Check the jack sizes and output types in the manuals before buying a cable; not every player or stereo has compatible connections.
- Turn the volumes down. Turn off the portable player and lower the car stereo volume before connecting them.
- Connect the cable. Plug a straight-plug audio cable into the CD player’s headphone or line-out jack and the stereo’s AUX jack.
- Select AUX and start playback. Choose AUX as the stereo source, start the CD player at a moderate volume, then raise the car stereo to your usual listening level. This sequence follows Sony’s front AUX connection instructions and portable audio connection guidance.
If the stereo has no front AUX jack
Check for a rear AUX input
Look up the stereo’s exact model number and check its manual or the manufacturer’s support page for a rear auxiliary input and the adapter it requires. An adapter made for one receiver is not necessarily compatible with another. Sony documents its XA300 auxiliary input adapter for certain Sony receiver configurations and recommends professional installation; it is not a universal adapter. Sony also notes that a BUS-compatible receiver is required for UniLink control connections, a requirement that should not be confused with every auxiliary connection. See Sony’s rear AUX adapter information.

Use an FM transmitter
An FM transmitter can send the player’s audio to a car stereo with FM radio when a suitable direct input is unavailable. Setup varies by transmitter, so follow its manual. For the Sony transmitter described in its setup instructions, the process is:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Park safely, then set the car stereo to FM.
- Choose an unused frequency within the transmitter’s supported range and tune the stereo to it. Sony gives 88.1–107.9 MHz for that specific product’s instructions; do not assume another transmitter uses the same range.
- Set the transmitter to the same frequency and connect its stereo mini plug to the CD player’s headphone jack.
- Start playback and adjust the listening volume. If the player has separate headphone and line-out settings, Sony advises using the headphone setting with its documented transmitter because line out may distort. Follow your own transmitter and player manuals if their instructions differ.
FM reception can change as you travel. If a station begins interfering with the signal, stop when safe and retune both devices to another open frequency. Sony warns: “Never perform connections and operations while driving your car.” Follow the transmitter’s instructions for its placement and vehicle power socket; leaving it plugged into the cigarette-lighter socket while the car is off may drain the vehicle battery.

Other options to check
- Cassette adapter: Consider this only if the car has a cassette deck. Check the adapter and stereo manuals for compatibility with the player; compatibility is not established for every combination.
- Bluetooth transmitter: This may be an option if the CD player has a suitable audio output and the stereo supports Bluetooth audio. Check both manuals for supported connections and pairing instructions rather than assuming the devices will work together.
Set it up while parked
Make connections and tune the stereo or transmitter before driving. Sony’s transmitter guidance also cautions against operating the equipment while waiting at a traffic signal. Avoid handling the player or changing frequencies on the road.
