To loop several videos through OBS on YouTube Live, install VLC, add a VLC Video Source to an OBS scene, add the videos to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, then preview the feed before making it public. OBS documents adding playlist items within the source, but the documentation reviewed here does not explain how to import an existing .m3u or similar playlist file directly.
Choose the OBS source that fits your playlist
| Source | Best for | Playback behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local media file | Can loop a single file. |
| VLC Video Source | Multiple media files | Supports a playlist, with controls for looping the list and shuffling its order. VLC must be installed. |
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes VLC Video Source as allowing a playlist of media files, unlike Media Source, which is intended for individual files. The documented approach is to add items within VLC Video Source. Direct import of a pre-existing .m3u, .pls, or other playlist document is not described there, so do not assume OBS can load your playlist file as-is.

Set up and loop a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Install VLC before adding the source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; OBS states that the VLC Video Source requires VLC and that the application bitness must match. If you cannot find the source after installation, check that match and restart OBS.
- Add VLC Video Source to a scene. In OBS, select or create the scene where the video should appear. In the Sources panel, select the add control and choose VLC Video Source. Add the media items you want played to its playlist.
- Set the order and repeat behavior. In the source properties, turn on Loop Playlist to restart the playlist when it reaches the end. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if videos should play in the order listed; turn it on only if randomized order is wanted.
- Decide what happens when the source is hidden. OBS documents the default visibility behavior as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If another scene may hide the source, choose the behavior that suits your broadcast and test scene switching. A source that stops while hidden will not continue playback in the background.
- Check the preview. Confirm the video is visible in the OBS canvas, the playlist advances as expected, and the audio is right before connecting or starting the public event.
VLC Video Source lists a network-caching default of 400 ms in its properties. That is a source setting, not a promise that every file or playback interruption will be handled without a hitch. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how sources are added to scenes.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to start live streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the connection details into OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s streaming settings and start the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions specify using the YouTube Live server URL and stream key.
- Preview before going public. Check the incoming picture and audio in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. When finished, stop the event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS.
Test the stream and avoid common interruptions
- Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing the setup and checking the Live Control Room preview; monitor both video and audio during the stream. Its streaming tips recommend upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate.
- Playlist does not advance or repeat: check that the intended items are in VLC Video Source and that Loop Playlist is enabled. Shuffle is a separate setting and changes order, not whether the playlist repeats.
- Source disappears or playback restarts after a scene change: review its visibility behavior. The documented default stops the source when it is not visible and restarts it when visible.
- VLC Video Source is missing: verify VLC is installed and matches OBS’s bitness (64-bit with 64-bit OBS).
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: verify the server URL and stream key copied from the correct Live Control Room event, and confirm OBS is sending. Then check the Live Control Room preview.
- Stream is unstable: check available upload capacity against total stream bitrate and leave the headroom YouTube recommends. The 400 ms VLC network-caching default does not guarantee uninterrupted playback.
A playlist looping in OBS does not by itself establish that its contents are cleared for YouTube or eligible for monetization. Use material you have the rights to stream and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel rules before broadcasting; this setup guidance does not guarantee that a stream will remain available or qualify for monetization.
