An ended livestream archive may show the original Live chat replay, but viewers cannot send new messages to that ended stream. A Premiere has active chat while it plays as a shared event, then may show chat replay after it ends. A new live broadcast has live chat while it is on.
First, identify what you are watching
| What you are watching | What happens to chat |
|---|---|
| An ended livestream archive | You may see the original chat replay alongside the video. It reproduces messages from the original event; it is not a room for new messages. |
| A Premiere in progress | Viewers can use Live Chat during the shared event, subject to YouTube’s restrictions and channel settings. |
| A completed Premiere | YouTube says chat replay is available after the Premiere ends. |
| A stream that is live now | Live Chat is real time. YouTube says it is available on watch pages, not embedded players. |
YouTube does not define “rerun” as a specific feature name. If a creator is broadcasting prerecorded gameplay as a new live event, chat behavior depends on that event and its setup; the official guidance cited here does not establish one universal rule for third-party rebroadcast software.

Can you chat during a livestream replay?
No—not in the original chat of an ended stream. When available, the archive’s chat replay shows the original conversation in sync with the video. It does not reopen that event’s chat for new messages. YouTube distinguishes Live Chat during a live stream from comments that can appear below the video after it ends (YouTube Help: live streams).
During an active livestream or Premiere, YouTube allows a viewer to send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, with each message limited to 200 characters. Those limits concern active chat, not an archived replay (YouTube Help: live chat).

Why is chat missing from a stream replay?
A missing chat replay does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with your device. YouTube documents several reasons it may not appear:
- The creator turned off Live chat replay in the video’s customization settings.
- The stream was edited in YouTube’s video editor; YouTube says chat replay will not be present on streams edited there.
- The video’s audience is set as Made for Kids. YouTube lists Live Chat and Live chat replay among the disabled features for that setting (YouTube Help: Made for Kids features).
- The stream archive was not captured. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all (YouTube Help: archive live streams).
If chat is absent, check whether you are watching an archive or a Premiere, whether the creator edited the video, and whether an archive exists. Comments below the video are separate from the original Live chat.

How a Premiere differs from a rerun
A Premiere schedules a video for viewers to watch together in real time. Viewers can send messages in its Live Chat during the event, and YouTube says chat replay is available afterward (YouTube Help: create a Premiere). That is different from simply opening an ended livestream archive, where any displayed chat is historical.

Creators can also use Live Redirect to send viewers from an ended livestream to a Premiere or another live stream. This is an end-of-stream handoff, not a replay of the original event or its chat. Redirecting viewers to another channel requires that channel’s permission, and the feature has eligibility requirements (YouTube Help: Live Redirect).

For gaming creators: preserving the event and chat
YouTube identifies encoders as a common way to broadcast gameplay and overlays. Its setup guidance advises creators to monitor stream quality and check that the event is accessible through the channel and watch pages (YouTube Help: live streaming with an encoder). Those are production checks; viewers do not need an encoder to watch an available chat replay.
If you want to show prerecorded gameplay as a new live broadcast, distinguish that broadcast from an archive or Premiere: the old chat does not become active again merely because a video is played. YouTube’s official guidance does not define a universal chat rule for third-party software that rebroadcasts prerecorded gameplay. For YouTube’s broader rules on game content, copyright and reused material, check the platform’s current policies and ensure you have the rights needed to stream the content.
