Yes. You can connect a USB keyboard and mouse to an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, but the console connection alone does not make every game compatible. Xbox provides platform-level support; each game developer decides whether to enable mouse-and-keyboard input, which controls are available, and whether the feature can be customized.
What works on Xbox
Xbox supports USB keyboards and mice as console peripherals. A wired keyboard and wired mouse can be connected directly to the console, and a wireless set that communicates through a compatible USB receiver can be used in the same way. Xbox Wire has described most wired and wireless USB keyboards and mice as working on Xbox One; the practical requirement is that the devices present themselves through USB and are compatible with Xbox.

That support is not a universal game license. Input is enabled on a title-by-title basis, entirely at the developer’s discretion. A keyboard can function correctly in one game and appear to do nothing in another without either device being faulty. The game must include mouse-and-keyboard handling, expose the controls it supports, and enable that input mode.
“It’s important to note that mouse and keyboard support for games is added on a title-by-title basis, entirely at developers’ discretion.” — Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management for Xbox Platform, Xbox Wire, 25 September 2018

What you need before connecting anything
- An Xbox Series X, Series S, or Xbox One console.
- A USB keyboard and USB mouse. Wired models connect directly. Wireless models should include a USB receiver that is intended to work with Xbox.
- Two available USB connections, unless your particular keyboard-and-mouse set shares one receiver or uses another documented arrangement.
- A game that supports the input. The console can recognize a peripheral while the game ignores it.
- Current software. Keep the console and game updated because input behavior and compatibility can change with later releases.
The official Xbox material cited for this setup discusses USB devices. It does not establish that a keyboard or mouse using Bluetooth alone will pair directly with an Xbox. Before buying a wireless model, confirm that it has a USB receiver and that the manufacturer identifies Xbox compatibility.
Connect a keyboard and mouse step by step
- Turn on the console and locate its USB ports. Use any open ports that are easy to reach. Do not force a connector; USB plugs should slide in normally.
- Connect the keyboard. Insert its USB cable or wireless receiver into a free USB port. If it is wireless, switch the keyboard on after the receiver is connected.
- Connect the mouse. Plug in its USB cable or receiver and turn the mouse on if it has a power switch.
- Wait briefly for the console to recognize the devices. There is no separate universal game-support switch that turns every title into a keyboard-and-mouse game. The important test happens inside a compatible title.
- Start the game or app you want to use. If the title supports the peripherals, open its menu and look for Controls, Input, or Mouse and Keyboard settings.
- Choose the available input options. Some games let you select keyboard and mouse explicitly; others begin accepting the devices as soon as they are detected. Use the game’s own instructions if the menu labels differ.
- Test movement and buttons in a safe area. A menu, training area, or practice mode lets you confirm that both devices respond before you enter a competitive or irreversible activity.
If the game has no keyboard-and-mouse section and mouse movement or key presses produce no response, first verify that the title actually supports the feature. The absence of a menu is often a game limitation rather than a console problem.
Find compatible games in the Microsoft Store
When you are deciding whether to buy or install a game, use the Microsoft Store’s Console Keyboard & Mouse capability filter. The label is a discovery aid: it identifies listings that expose that capability on console.

- Open the Microsoft Store on Xbox.
- Search for the game you are considering, or browse the relevant game category.
- Open the title’s listing and inspect its capabilities.
- Use the Console Keyboard & Mouse filter when browsing, and check that the individual listing carries the capability.
- After installation, confirm the game’s own Controls, Input, or Mouse and Keyboard menu. Store metadata and in-game behavior should agree, but the game settings are the final place to see which actions and adjustments are exposed.
Do not treat an old list of supported games as permanent. Xbox Wire’s November 2018 announcement named Fortnite and Warframe among early examples and mentioned additional titles, but that announcement was a historical snapshot, not an exhaustive or continuing catalog. Games can add, change, or remove input behavior through later updates.
Configure controls inside a supported game
Key bindings
If the game provides key remapping, open its Controls or Input page and assign actions to the keys you prefer. Save the profile before leaving the menu, then test every important action. Some titles offer only a fixed keyboard layout; in that case, the available settings are the game’s limit.
Mouse sensitivity
Look for a mouse-sensitivity setting in the same menu. The name and scale differ by game, so a value that feels fast in one title may feel slow in another. Change one setting at a time and test it in a practice area rather than assuming the console applies a single sensitivity setting across all games.

Mixed controller use
A game may allow a controller, a keyboard, a mouse, or a combination, but the exact behavior is decided by its developer. If switching between devices causes a prompt or menu to change, follow the title’s instructions. Xbox platform support does not guarantee that every title permits mixed input during every mode.
Apps versus games
USB devices can be recognized at the console level, but an app must also implement keyboard or mouse commands. If a keyboard works in one app or game and not another, test the second title’s documented input options before replacing hardware.
Wired USB versus wireless USB-receiver devices
| Consideration | Wired keyboard and mouse | Wireless set with USB receiver |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | USB cable runs from each device to the console. | A receiver occupies a USB port; the keyboard and mouse communicate with that receiver. |
| Evidence in the Xbox guidance | Official guidance explicitly covers wired USB keyboards and mice. | Official guidance also describes wireless USB devices, provided they use a compatible USB connection. |
| Power | Power normally comes through the cable. | Batteries or rechargeable cells must be charged and switched on. |
| Port planning | Often requires one port per device unless the set has a shared connection. | Usually requires one port for the receiver; verify the set’s design. |
| Bluetooth-only models | Not applicable. | Direct Bluetooth-only Xbox support is not established by the cited official material; verify before purchase. |
| Failure points | Cable, connector, or USB port can be loose or damaged. | In addition to the USB port, check receiver placement, power, battery charge, and the model’s Xbox compatibility. |
For the least uncertainty, begin with a standard wired USB keyboard and mouse. A wireless USB-receiver set is convenient when cable length or desk layout matters, but the receiver and Xbox compatibility should be confirmed before buying.

Why a keyboard works in one game but not another
The most common explanation is title-specific support. The Xbox operating system can recognize a USB peripheral while a game chooses to accept only controller input. Developers also decide whether to support keyboard input, mouse input, both together, remapping, sensitivity controls, and particular game modes.
- Supported in one title, unsupported in another: normal behavior when the games have different input implementations.
- Keyboard works but mouse does not: the title may support only keyboard commands, or mouse input may be limited to a particular menu or mode.
- Mouse works but certain keys do not: the game may use a fixed layout or reserve those keys for actions it does not allow you to change.
- Worked previously, then stopped: check the game’s current settings and install available game and console updates. Updates can change support behavior, although no particular update is guaranteed to fix a particular device.
- Nothing works anywhere: reseat the USB connections, try another console USB port, and test the devices in a title known to expose keyboard-and-mouse support.
Troubleshoot a keyboard or mouse that is not responding
1. Check the physical connection
Unplug both devices and reconnect them firmly. Try a different USB port on the console. For a wireless set, reconnect the receiver, turn both peripherals on, and check the batteries or charge. A loose connector can look exactly like unsupported game input.

2. Separate hardware failure from game limitation
Test the keyboard and mouse in another game or app that is documented as accepting them. If they work there, the first title is the likely limitation. If they fail everywhere, continue checking the connection, receiver, power, and hardware compatibility.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
3. Verify the Store capability
Return to the game’s Microsoft Store listing and look for the Console Keyboard & Mouse capability. If it is absent, do not assume that a USB device is defective simply because the game ignores it.
4. Inspect the game’s current settings
Open Controls, Input, or Mouse and Keyboard. Look for an input-mode selector, a disabled toggle, key bindings, and mouse sensitivity. Some games expose support only after a peripheral is connected before the game starts, so reconnect the devices and relaunch the title if its instructions call for that sequence.
5. Update and retest
Install pending console and game updates, restart the game, and repeat the test. Treat this as maintenance rather than a promise that an update will add support. If the title still does not respond and its listing or documentation does not promise keyboard-and-mouse input, contact the game’s support channel for title-specific information.

Choose wired when reliability is the priority
A wired USB set avoids battery management and receiver pairing. It is the simplest first test because the connection path is visible: cable, console USB port, and game support. Make sure the cables reach your seating position without being pulled tight.
Choose wireless USB when the desk layout matters
Wireless is reasonable when you need to sit farther from the console or want fewer cables. Select a set with a USB receiver and explicit Xbox compatibility. A model advertised only for Bluetooth devices or only for another platform should not be assumed to work on Xbox.
Check the game before spending money
Peripheral specifications cannot compensate for a title that accepts only a controller. Use the Store capability filter and inspect the game’s own controls information first. If keyboard-and-mouse support is essential, make that verification part of your purchase decision rather than an afterthought.
Quick Recap
Limits to keep in mind
- There is no platform setting that forces unsupported games to accept a mouse and keyboard.
- Support can differ between games from the same publisher and can differ between modes within one game.
- The presence of a USB port does not certify a particular keyboard, mouse, wireless receiver, or Bluetooth implementation.
- Store capability labels and historical announcements help you find candidates, but the current in-game Controls or Input page is where you confirm the options actually available.
- Key remapping and mouse sensitivity are optional game features, not universal Xbox controls.
Quick checklist
- Use a wired USB set or a wireless set with a compatible USB receiver.
- Connect the keyboard and mouse to available Xbox USB ports.
- Check the Microsoft Store listing for the Console Keyboard & Mouse capability.
- Launch the game and open Controls, Input, or Mouse and Keyboard.
- Configure bindings and sensitivity only if the title provides those options.
- If it fails, reseat the devices, try another USB port, test another supported title, and install pending updates.
Key facts
- USB keyboard-and-mouse peripherals are supported at the Xbox platform level.
- Individual game support is controlled by each developer and is not enabled by default for every title.
- The early Xbox Wire game list from 2018 is an example from that time, not a permanent compatibility catalog.
- The Microsoft Store’s Console Keyboard & Mouse capability helps identify games to investigate.
- For wireless hardware, verify the USB receiver and Xbox compatibility; Bluetooth-only operation is not established by the cited Xbox guidance.
