A mini PC can send prerecorded stories to YouTube Live by running an encoder such as OBS and feeding it a stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. To keep the stream running around the clock, the PC, encoder, network connection, and power must all stay available—and YouTube’s automatic archive guarantee applies only to streams under 12 hours. The steps below cover setup and testing, while flagging what needs checking before you rely on a particular mini PC for unattended operation.
What the mini PC does—and what 24/7 requires
The mini PC is the local computer that plays your story video and runs streaming software. YouTube receives that software’s outgoing stream; it does not make the mini PC unnecessary. YouTube lists OBS as an encoder option available at no charge. A mini PC’s ability to run a chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec continuously depends on the specific hardware and software: YouTube’s guidance does not establish a minimum configuration or certify any model for uninterrupted operation. - The computer must remain powered on and awake, with the encoder and story playback running.
- The upload connection must reliably sustain the chosen stream bitrate. Test it under conditions representative of the intended broadcast.
- Plan for interruptions such as power loss, internet loss, encoder failure, or a system restart. The guidance cited here does not establish automatic recovery for a mini PC setup.
- Check YouTube’s current handling of broadcasts longer than 12 hours before relying on an all-day archive or planning an uninterrupted rollover.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
- Enable live streaming. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activate the feature in YouTube Studio. YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your intended start.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create a stream, or Manage to schedule one. Scheduling can provide a shareable URL and viewer reminders.
- Get the connection details. In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Choose the story source. Make sure the intended video or playlist can play continuously in your chosen playback and encoder workflow. The official guidance cited here does not specify a particular playlist or looping method, so verify that your software keeps the source moving rather than ending after one play.
Configure the encoder and video quality
Connect OBS or another encoder
- Install and open the encoder on the mini PC. YouTube lists OBS among its software encoder options.
- If the encoder offers a YouTube service preset, select it. Otherwise, enter the YouTube stream URL as the server and paste the stream key into the stream-key field.
- Select the stream resolution, frame rate, and video codec supported by your playback workflow and mini PC. YouTube detects incoming encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes the stream into outputs for viewers on different devices and network conditions.
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS where available: YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers.
- Configure audio as AAC or MP3, both listed as supported by YouTube. Check that the story has audible sound at an appropriate level and that no unintended desktop audio is being sent.
Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as a starting point
The figures below are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026—not measurements of a mini PC or a guarantee that an internet connection can sustain a stream. The AV1/H.265 figures are published minimum-to-maximum ranges.

Pick a setting your upload connection can sustain reliably, rather than treating the recommendation as a bandwidth guarantee. For a less demanding story presentation, a lower resolution or frame rate may be more practical than pushing the mini PC or connection to its limit. Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Run a representative test. Use audio and motion similar to the actual stories, not just a static desktop. Confirm that the encoder sends the expected picture and sound.
- Check the connection and stream health. Watch Live Control Room for the incoming preview and warnings. If stream health is unstable, reduce the bitrate or quality and test again; also check whether the upload connection is reliable.
- Start sending from the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for YouTube’s preview and click Go live in Live Control Room if prompted.
- Monitor the system during operation. Check that the mini PC remains awake, the story source continues, the encoder stays connected, and YouTube reports healthy incoming video. YouTube’s setup guidance does not establish automated restart or unattended recovery for a particular PC and encoder.
Plan endings, interruptions, and archives carefully
YouTube states that “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement does not establish that a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived, nor that one stream can roll into another without interruption. If an archive matters, plan a stream shorter than 12 hours and verify the current YouTube workflow before scheduling it. To end or deliberately restart, stop the encoder and end the stream through YouTube’s workflow.
A truly continuous channel may therefore need planned stream sessions rather than one broadcast left open indefinitely. Confirm the current YouTube behavior and the transition your setup can support before promising viewers uninterrupted playback or a complete archive.

Troubleshoot common mini PC stream problems

Before streaming stories, make sure you have the rights needed to use the video, narration, music, and other included material.
