On a Linux machine that uses systemd, run an FFmpeg YouTube Live playlist at boot by saving the command in a system service, configuring the playlist and stream credentials safely, then enabling the service. This keeps the process from depending on a desktop login, but it does not by itself guarantee a healthy stream: test after a real reboot and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
What you need before configuring the service
- A Linux host with systemd and an installed FFmpeg build that supports the inputs, codecs and output format you plan to use.
- Local media files that the service account can read, plus an absolute path to the playlist.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put a real key in a public example, shared repository or world-readable service file.
- A reliable upload connection capable of sustaining the selected bitrate. The title is about India, but the reviewed YouTube encoder guidance does not establish a special India-specific setting; your actual connection is the relevant local variable.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder input. In Live Control Room, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and use it with the stream key in your encoder configuration. Keep credentials out of logs and shared files, and use a secret-handling approach appropriate to your system.

The concat demuxer presents compatible files as a virtual concatenation; mismatched streams or time bases, or inaccurate duration information, can create playback or timestamp problems. Avoid untrusted paths or remote URLs unless you understand FFconcat’s safe-path behavior.
Match encoder settings to the content and connection
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Select a codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate together, then verify that the upload connection can sustain the chosen rate. YouTube Help recommends: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”

These are YouTube Help’s current H.264 recommendations, reviewed on 3 October 2026, not universal rates for every codec or source. YouTube’s recommended rates differ for AV1 and H.265. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions page for the exact target and codec you intend to send.

Replace the placeholder endpoint and key using a secure configuration method; never publish a real key. Verify that your FFmpeg build includes the chosen encoder and that the input actually matches the intended output. Adjust frame rate, scaling, pixel format, audio, encoder and bitrate as needed. The 1080p/60 fps recommendation is 17 Mbps, not the rate shown in this 30 fps example.
Put FFmpeg in a systemd service
Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.service. This example shows the service structure; adapt the paths, account, target and credential handling to your distribution and security policy.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetThe command is abbreviated to fit the unit example and still contains credential placeholders: configure the real stream destination without exposing the key in a public or world-readable unit. A root-owned configuration file with restrictive permissions or another suitable secret mechanism may be used, but check how your chosen method exposes values in process listings, logs and service metadata.
Why the service needs explicit paths and an account
At boot, systemd does not inherit the shell environment or current directory from your interactive session. Use absolute paths for FFmpeg and media, set a working directory if needed, and ensure the configured user and group can read every input. The network-online dependency is a request to order startup after the configured network-online target; how that target behaves varies by distribution and network manager.
Reload, enable and start it
- After saving the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable boot activation and start the service now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.service. - Check whether it is active and inspect any reported error:
sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.service. - Read the service log for FFmpeg output and startup failures:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service. - Reboot the host and repeat the status, journal and YouTube stream-health checks. A successful manual start is not proof that paths, permissions, networking and credentials work at boot.
The commands shown are standard systemctl usage; target names, unit policy and network-online behavior can vary across Linux distributions. Confirm local systemd documentation if your distribution’s service conventions differ.

Test the live output and understand restart behavior
Start with representative media containing the same kind of motion and audio as the intended stream. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected video and audio, and monitor stream health in Live Control Room before leaving the host unattended. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archival behavior is not a guarantee of a continuous stream or of any particular playlist restart arrangement.
Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart the service after a qualifying process failure. It does not detect every frozen, malformed or otherwise unhealthy stream, and systemd restart attempts are subject to start-rate limiting. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can be configured for output recovery after a network outage, but its attempt_recovery option is disabled by default; it is a separate configuration, not something the unit example automatically enables.
Troubleshoot common failures

Cost and hosting choices
If you already have a Linux machine that can stay powered and a reliable connection with sufficient upload capacity, using it avoids renting a separate host, but continuous operation consumes its power and depends on that machine and connection. A remote VPS is another category of host, not a guarantee of adequate bandwidth, routing, storage access or provider permission; compare the actual provider’s terms and costs before moving media there. No particular VPS provider or India-specific connection performance is established here.
