Mixxx’s documented Live Broadcasting feature sends audio to Icecast or Shoutcast, not directly to YouTube Live. For a YouTube-only show, route Mixxx audio into an encoder such as OBS, add a visual, then send the encoder’s feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. If you also want a conventional internet-radio stream, configure Mixxx to send a separate feed to an Icecast or Shoutcast server.
Choose the right signal path
The YouTube setup has three parts: Mixxx plays and mixes your show, an encoder combines its audio with video or a graphic, and YouTube receives the encoder feed. Mixxx’s manual documents its Live Broadcasting output for Icecast and Shoutcast; it does not document an official direct Mixxx-to-YouTube integration. You therefore do not need a radio server for a YouTube-only broadcast.

- YouTube only: Mixxx audio → encoder (such as OBS) → YouTube Live.
- YouTube plus internet radio: send one output through the encoder to YouTube and configure Mixxx separately for your Icecast/Shoutcast server.
Menu names and audio-routing steps vary with Mixxx version, operating system, and encoder. The Mixxx manual page cited here is for version 2.4 and says 2.5 is the latest release; check instructions for your installed versions before following OS-specific capture steps. Mixxx Live Broadcasting manual
Set up Mixxx audio and the encoder
1. Create the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. The key is a credential that identifies where the encoder should send the feed and lets YouTube accept it, so keep it private. Do not post it or share it as ordinary text. YouTube: stream with an encoder
2. Build an encoder scene and capture Mixxx
- In your encoder, create a scene with the visual you want viewers to see: for example, a show graphic or a camera source.
- Select the audio input that carries Mixxx playback. Confirm that the encoder’s audio meters move while Mixxx plays, and monitor the preview for both sound and picture.
- Audio capture varies by operating system and routing setup. If the encoder does not receive Mixxx, check the OS’s available loopback or desktop-audio capture options and the encoder’s device selection. The cited Mixxx and YouTube documentation does not establish one universal menu path.
A microphone, mixer, or audio interface can be useful if your show includes live speech or external hardware, but none is required for a software-only Mixxx show. YouTube lists microphones and mixers as possible encoder equipment, not universal requirements. YouTube: encoder equipment

3. Configure the YouTube destination
- Open your encoder’s streaming settings and enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
- When the encoder supports it, choose RTMPS and use the RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP; do not guess an endpoint. YouTube: encoder settings and RTMPS
4. Set encoding and verify it
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 video with constant bitrate encoding, a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 128 kbps. Set resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate to match your connection and YouTube’s current encoder table; a single bitrate is not right for every resolution or frame rate. YouTube: choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Use the encoder’s constant-bitrate option for video and set the keyframe interval to two seconds.
- Choose H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio; use the stereo audio guidance above if broadcasting in stereo.
- Compare your chosen resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s current bitrate table, then check stream health after sending a test feed.
YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured source feed.

5. Preview before going public
- Start sending from the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview for the intended visual, audible Mixxx output, and any clipping or silence. Inspect stream health before the public start.
- For a scheduled broadcast, use YouTube’s Go live action after checking the preview. Continue monitoring audio and video while the show is running.
6. End the broadcast
Follow the event workflow in Live Control Room to end the stream; YouTube’s encoder instructions describe stopping the encoder feed, and the scheduled workflow provides an End stream action. Then stop the encoder as appropriate for your setup. YouTube: end an encoder stream

Use Mixxx’s Live Broadcasting settings only when you also need to send the show to an Icecast or Shoutcast server. Those settings are separate from the YouTube encoder URL and key. Mixxx’s documented connection fields include server type, host name or IP, login, mount, port, and password. Icecast requires a mount point; the manual warns not to enter a full URL in the Host field. Mixxx supports MP3 or Ogg Vorbis for Icecast and MP3 for Shoutcast. - TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

Do not put your YouTube stream URL or key into these radio-server fields. The radio-server configuration sends a separate stream to the radio host; the encoder handles YouTube.
Check rights and YouTube’s live-stream rules
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights to every track, recording, visual, and other material in the show. The sources cited here establish the technical workflow and encoder requirements, not whether particular music is cleared for a live broadcast or eligible for monetization. YouTube may act on copyrighted material; do not assume that a track is safe simply because it is available to play in Mixxx. Review YouTube’s current policies and the terms for any music you use. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
- YouTube does not receive a feed: check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and current key from the selected Live Control Room stream, that it is sending, and that network access is available. If using RTMPS, use the supplied RTMPS endpoint.
- The feed arrives but Mixxx is silent: confirm Mixxx is playing, select the audio device or capture source that carries its output, and watch the encoder meters. Audio routing is OS-specific, so verify the capture method for your operating system.
- Preview has sound but no intended visual: check that the correct encoder scene is active and that its graphic, camera, or other visual source is present.
- Audio distorts or drops out: inspect the encoder’s audio meter and the selected input; ensure the intended Mixxx output is being captured. Recheck the feed in Live Control Room before going public.
- Stream health reports problems: verify the encoder’s codec, constant bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s guidance. Confirm that the selected resolution and frame rate are supported by your available upload capacity, then test again.
- Icecast/Shoutcast connection fails: if you are configuring an additional radio stream, check its server type, host, login, port, password, and mount as supplied by the radio provider. For Icecast, use a mount point and do not enter a full URL in the Host field.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded recordings looping on YouTube rather than mix a live show, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video playback, not a camera-based live Mixxx performance. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
