A microSD card can add removable space for photos, videos, and other files—but only if your exact phone model has a card slot and supports the card’s capacity. Check compatibility first, then decide how you’ll use the card: portable file storage is transferable, while Android’s adoptable-storage option is available only on some devices and ties the card to that device. Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage.
Can your phone use a microSD card?
Not every phone has a card slot, and supported capacities vary by model—even within the same brand. Look up the exact model’s specifications or support page before buying. Confirm both that it accepts a microSD card and the maximum capacity it supports; do not assume that a card compatible with one phone will work in another. Samsung outlines model-specific support in its microSD guidance and UK SD-card instructions.

Card formats are grouped by capacity: microSD cards hold up to 2GB, microSDHC cards hold more than 2GB and up to 32GB, and microSDXC cards hold more than 32GB and up to 2TB, according to Samsung’s support documentation. These categories do not override a phone’s own limit. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video recording, but check your phone’s requirements and the card’s current specifications before choosing one.
Portable storage or internal storage?
Android’s setup flow may offer portable or internal storage. The choice affects what you can store and whether you can move the card to another device. Google explains the options in Get started with an SD card.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
| Storage mode | What it can store | Can you transfer the card? |
|---|---|---|
| Portable | Files such as photos and videos; not apps | Yes. Android describes it as transferable between devices. |
| Internal (adoptable) | Files and apps, on devices that offer this option | Not in the same way as portable storage; the card is set up for that device. |
Setting up or changing storage mode involves formatting, which permanently erases the card’s data. Back up its contents first. Menu choices and manufacturer support differ. In particular, Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage, so Galaxy users should treat a card as removable storage for files and media.
How to choose a card for your phone
- Check the exact phone model. Confirm it has a microSD slot and note its maximum supported capacity.
- Estimate the space you need. Match capacity to the photos, videos, and other files you plan to keep on the card, while staying within the phone’s limit.
- Match the card’s speed class to the task. Check the phone’s recording requirements and the card’s specifications, especially if you record high-resolution video or are considering app storage.
- Decide whether you need portability. Portable storage suits files you may move between devices. Adoptable storage is only an option on devices that support it and is not freely transferable.
Speed labels describe classifications, not guaranteed results in every phone. For example, Samsung’s announcement about specified 128GB-and-higher cards in certain product lines describes A2 application-performance class and V30 video-speed class. Those specifications do not establish that every card carrying those labels will make every phone or app faster, or that it meets a particular phone’s recording requirements. Check current card details and the phone maker’s requirements before buying. Samsung’s announcement covers the products it describes.

How to move files—and why apps may not move
On Samsung phones, Samsung’s instructions use the My Files app to copy or move selected files to a card. App names and steps can vary by phone and software version; consult the instructions for your model. Samsung’s Galaxy microSD guide describes its file and app-management process.
Moving an app is not guaranteed. Developers can disallow card storage, preloaded apps may be ineligible, and Samsung notes that performance considerations can prevent the option. If the app’s settings do not show a “Change” option, Samsung says its location cannot be changed through that process. A card therefore does not guarantee a particular amount of freed internal space.

Format, troubleshoot, and remove the card safely
Before formatting
Formatting erases all data on the card. Copy anything you want to keep somewhere else before formatting, whether you are setting up the card or troubleshooting it. Android’s setup guide and Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting instructions explain the consequences and options.
If the phone reports a card problem
Samsung says formatting may resolve some SD-card errors. If warnings continue, the card may be damaged; back up what you can and replace it if problems persist. Samsung also points to the SD Association’s Memory Card Formatter for cases where a device cannot format the card. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guide for its steps.

Before removing the card
Use the phone’s settings to unmount or eject the card before taking it out, if your device provides that control. The settings path and card-tray location vary by model. When opening a tray, use the proper eject point: Samsung warns not to insert a SIM-eject tool into microphone or speaker holes. Its Galaxy microSD instructions cover removal.
