Use a handheld pinpointer after your ground-search detector has narrowed a signal to a small area. Scan the recovered plug and the hole in a deliberate pattern, following the probe’s audio or vibration response toward the target. Startup, sensitivity controls and water limits vary by model, so follow that device’s instructions rather than assuming every pinpointer works the same way.
What a pinpointer does
A pinpointer is a handheld recovery aid for locating a metallic target in loose soil, a plug or an excavation. It complements a ground-search metal detector; it does not replace one. How to use a pinpointer in the field
- Find the target area with your ground-search detector. Use that detector to identify the general location before taking out the pinpointer.
- Power on the pinpointer according to its manual. Startup procedures are model-specific. Garrett advises holding the PRO-POINTER away from metal when switching it on and warns that turning it on beside a target can cancel that target. Minelab’s FAQ for the PRO-FIND 15 and 35 says to keep metal away from the probe and wait for the short third beep before detecting. Garrett instructions; Minelab FAQ
- Recover the plug or loose soil carefully. Keep the material together so you can scan it without spreading it farther from the hole.
- Scan the plug and hole methodically. Move the probe through the plug, then check the hole and its sides. Minelab recommends using the tip to inspect the sides of a hole. Minelab FAQ
- Follow the changing response. On the models described by their manufacturers, audio and vibration intensify as the probe approaches a target. Narrow the search by moving the probe through the material and noting where the response grows. The exact pattern depends on the pinpointer and its selected mode. - Adjust sensitivity if the response covers too much ground and the model permits it. Lowering sensitivity can help narrow the search area on the PRO-FIND 35; Minelab also identifies mineralised or salty soil as situations where reducing it may help. How to narrow down a target in the plug or hole
If the target is in the plug
Scan the plug in small, overlapping passes. When the response strengthens in one part, separate or turn that portion of soil and check again. Continue with smaller portions until the target is exposed. Keep track of which material has already been checked so you do not repeatedly search the same area.

If the target is still in the hole
Check the bottom and sides, using the tip to probe the sides where practical. If the response seems to cover the entire opening, reduce sensitivity only if your model has that control, then scan again. Avoid widening the excavation until you have checked the loose soil and the hole carefully.

If the response is broad or hard to interpret
Move slowly and compare the response across nearby points instead of digging at random. Audio and vibration may both help, but the available alerts and their intensity vary by device and mode. Consult the manual if the response pattern or control behavior is unfamiliar.
Controls and limits depend on the model
Do not transfer one pinpointer’s settings or water rating to another. For example, Minelab lists five sensitivity levels and audio and vibration indication for the PRO-FIND 35. It also lists that model as waterproof to 3 m (10 ft); Minelab says to make sure its battery cap is fully tightened before submerging it. Before rinsing or submerging the pinpointer
- Check the water rating for the exact model; a rating for one product does not apply to another.
- Follow the maker’s instructions for closures and battery caps before submerging. Minelab specifies a fully tightened battery cap for the PRO-FIND 35.
- If the device is not rated for submersion, do not assume that rinsing or dunking it is safe; follow its manual’s cleaning guidance.
