Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf the drive contains files you need, do not format or initialize it. First identify whether it uses APFS or HFS+ (Mac OS Extended). Windows may not show either format for ordinary file access. To keep the existing format, use a compatible Windows driver or copy the files using a Mac. For regular use on both Mac and Windows, back up the files elsewhere, then format the drive as exFAT.
Identify the drive’s format before changing anything
“Mac-formatted” can mean different file systems, and the right option depends on which one is on the drive. Apple describes APFS as the default for macOS 10.13 or later, while older Mac drives may use HFS+ (also called Mac OS Extended). A drive may instead already use exFAT or another format.

If you can connect the drive to a Mac, open Disk Utility and inspect the format shown for its volume. Apple lists APFS variants, including encrypted and case-sensitive formats, as well as Windows-compatible formats. Western Digital identifies HFS+ as “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” in macOS. See Apple’s guide to file system formats in Disk Utility and Western Digital’s drive-format guide.
On the PC, Disk Management can help you inspect whether Windows sees a disk or partition, but an unfamiliar or unusable volume is not proof that its files are gone. Do not choose Delete Volume, Initialize, or Format if you need the data. Western Digital’s format workflow deletes the existing volume and warns that formatting loses the data.

Choose a route based on whether you need the current files
| Option | What happens to the current format and files? | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use a Windows APFS driver | Designed to access the existing APFS volume without reformatting | An APFS drive that needs to stay in its current format | Third-party software; check supported Windows versions, encryption, and volume limitations. See Paragon APFS for Windows. |
| Use a Windows HFS+ driver | Designed to access the existing HFS+ volume without reformatting | A Mac OS Extended drive that needs to stay in its current format | HFS+ support uses a separate product from APFS support. See Paragon HFS+ for Windows. |
| Copy using a Mac | Leaves the source format unchanged if you only copy files | You have access to a Mac and want to avoid installing a Windows driver | You need another storage destination for the copy. |
| Back up, then format as exFAT | Formatting removes the existing volume and its data; copy wanted files elsewhere first | Routine file exchange between Mac and Windows | Requires a verified backup and changes the drive’s format. |
To keep the existing files, use a compatible driver or a Mac
For an APFS drive
Paragon advertises APFS for Windows as a read-write driver and lists Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 SP1, and specified Windows Server versions. Its product page says it detects FileVault-encrypted volumes. The vendor also lists limits: cloned APFS files have limited read-only support, only containers on a single physical store are supported, and the product cannot format or verify APFS volumes. Check the current compatibility and encryption details on Paragon’s APFS for Windows page before installing. These are the vendor’s specifications, not a guarantee for every drive.
For an HFS+ or Mac OS Extended drive
Paragon separately advertises HFS+ for Windows for reading and writing HFS+ and HFSX, with a read-only mount option. An APFS driver is not a substitute: Paragon says its APFS product does not support HFS+. Check the current details on Paragon’s HFS+ for Windows page.

If you can use a Mac
Connect the drive to the Mac that can read it and copy the files you need to another drive or backup location. This avoids changing the source format. If the disk holds the only copy of important files and appears damaged or inaccessible, avoid write operations and reformatting; the cited guidance does not establish a recovery method for a particular failed drive.

exFAT is the practical shared format described by the cited guidance: Western Digital says Windows and macOS can both read and write exFAT drives. Apple lists exFAT as Windows-compatible and recommends it for Windows volumes larger than 32 GB. Apple lists MS-DOS (FAT) for Windows volumes of 32 GB or less. See Apple’s format guidance and Western Digital’s format guide.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Copy the files you want to keep to a separate location, such as another drive or a backup. Do not rely on the drive you are about to erase as the only copy.
- Verify the copy by checking that important files are present and can be opened from the destination.
- Format the intended external drive as exFAT using Disk Utility on a Mac or Disk Management on Windows. Confirm the selected disk carefully before applying changes; the format process removes the existing volume’s data.
- Reconnect and check the drive on both computers before relying on it for transfers.
Apple warns that formatting deletes the volume’s data and recommends making a backup first. A single drive used between two computers is still only one copy of the files.

A drive can be missing from File Explorer because Windows cannot use its file system, because it lacks a drive letter, or for other connection, partition, power, or hardware reasons. The cited guidance does not establish the cause of any particular missing-drive symptom.
