How to Use a Keyboard, Mouse and Browser on a Living-Room Retro PC

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Use a USB keyboard and mouse for the most reliable first boot, then switch to a wireless keyboard with an integrated touchpad once Bluetooth or its USB receiver is paired. RetroPie runs the emulators; web browsing happens in the Raspberry Pi OS desktop (or another installed desktop environment), so moving between games and the browser means changing applications rather than opening a browser inside RetroPie.

What you need before connecting the retro PC to the TV

A living-room RetroPie computer is a small desktop system, not just a game console. Prepare every part before the first boot so you can configure the network and input devices without getting stuck at a setup screen.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Raspberry Pi board: Confirm the exact model before buying accessories.
  • TV or monitor: Use an available HDMI input and note which input number it uses.
  • Correct video cable: Raspberry Pi 4 uses the HDMI0 micro-HDMI port and a micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable. Other generations use the connector specified for that board.
  • Power supply: Use the supply appropriate for the Pi model; an underpowered board can disconnect USB devices or fail during boot.
  • Network access: Wi-Fi is convenient in a living room; Ethernet is useful if the TV cabinet is near the router.
  • Keyboard and mouse: A wired USB pair is the simplest first-boot option. A wireless set with a USB receiver also works. Bluetooth peripherals can be paired when the operating system supports them.
  • Game controller: RetroPie expects a controller for normal gaming, while a USB keyboard is useful for configuration that cannot be completed with a controller.

Keep a wired USB keyboard and mouse available even if your final arrangement is wireless. They provide a recovery path when a wireless receiver is in the wrong USB port, batteries are flat, or Bluetooth pairing has not yet been completed.

Choose the right keyboard and mouse arrangement

The best control surface depends on whether you are configuring the machine, browsing from the sofa, or playing games. No documented performance figures establish a universal wireless range, latency, or browser speed advantage, so choose by connection reliability and ergonomics rather than an assumed benchmark.

Wired USB keyboard and mouse

Connect both devices directly to USB ports before powering on. Wired input normally works immediately and avoids pairing menus, receiver compatibility questions, and battery charging. Its disadvantages are cable length and the need to keep a mouse on a table or other flat surface near the sofa.

Wireless set with a USB receiver

Insert the receiver before booting, then turn on the keyboard and mouse. The receiver occupies one USB port and usually presents the pair to the operating system as ordinary USB input. Keep the receiver visible rather than hidden behind a metal cabinet or television, and keep spare batteries nearby.

Bluetooth keyboard and mouse

Bluetooth removes the receiver cable and leaves all USB ports free, but pairing must be completed in the operating system. If you use a USB Bluetooth adapter, plug it in before booting. Bluetooth is most convenient after the initial setup; a wired set remains the safer choice for first configuration and recovery.

One keyboard with an integrated touchpad

A wireless keyboard with a built-in touchpad combines text entry and pointer control in one couch-friendly device. It reduces the number of objects to manage and avoids balancing a separate mouse on the sofa. This is a practical ergonomic recommendation, not a measured product test: check key spacing, touchpad responsiveness, battery access, charging method, and the device’s receiver or Bluetooth compatibility before buying.

Setup First-boot reliability Sofa convenience USB use Ongoing burden
Wired keyboard + wired mouse Highest; no pairing Lowest if cables are short Two ports Manage cables; no batteries
Wireless keyboard + mouse with receiver High after receiver is recognized Good; no signal cables to the sofa One receiver port Replace or recharge batteries
Bluetooth keyboard + mouse Dependent on pairing and adapter support Good and receiver-free None for the peripherals Pairing and battery management
Wireless keyboard with integrated touchpad High with a receiver; pairing-dependent with Bluetooth Best for a single couch control surface One receiver port, or none with Bluetooth Charge or replace one device’s battery

Connect the Raspberry Pi to the TV

  1. Identify the board model. Read the model marking or check the documentation that came with the board. Do not assume every Raspberry Pi uses the same HDMI plug.
  2. For Raspberry Pi 4, use HDMI0. Connect a micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable from the board’s HDMI0 micro-HDMI socket to an HDMI input on the TV. If the board is another generation, use the cable and port specified for that model.
  3. Select the TV input. Turn on the television and choose the HDMI input used by the Pi. If the screen stays blank, recheck the selected input and cable before changing software settings.
  4. Attach input devices. Plug in the wired keyboard and mouse, or insert the wireless receiver. For a Bluetooth adapter, insert it before booting.
  5. Connect network and power. Ethernet can be connected before power; Wi-Fi is configured during operating-system setup. Connect power last so the board starts with the display and input devices already available.

RetroPie’s installation guidance identifies a display, the appropriate cable, power, network access, a controller, and a USB keyboard as the practical foundation. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance likewise states that initial configuration requires a display, display cable, keyboard, and mouse.

Complete the first Raspberry Pi OS setup

On first boot, follow the setup screens with the keyboard and mouse. The exact appearance can vary by Raspberry Pi OS release, but the decisions that matter for this use case are consistent.

Configure the network

Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password, or use Ethernet if connected. A working network is needed for updates, browser use, remote administration, and downloading or configuring software. If Wi-Fi is not listed, verify the password, move the Pi temporarily closer to the access point, or complete setup over Ethernet before troubleshooting radio connectivity.

Select a browser

Raspberry Pi OS presents a choice of Chromium or Firefox during setup. If you make no selection, Chromium is the default. You can change the default later from the desktop or through raspi-config. The official documentation establishes that both browsers are available; it does not publish a head-to-head benchmark for speed, memory consumption, extension support, or site compatibility.

Finish with a usable desktop

Complete the remaining account, locale, and update prompts shown by your installation. After the desktop appears, test both pointer movement and text entry before moving the Pi behind the television. This catches a dead battery, an unrecognized receiver, or a keyboard layout problem while the devices are still easy to reach.

Install or launch RetroPie without losing desktop access

RetroPie is the emulation front end. The browser is not normally a RetroPie menu item; it runs in the underlying Raspberry Pi OS desktop or another desktop environment installed on the machine. Treat the two as separate layers:

  • RetroPie/EmulationStation: presents systems, games, controller configuration, and emulator settings.
  • Desktop environment: provides windows, the pointer, network tools, a terminal, and Chromium or Firefox.

Install RetroPie using the instructions for your Raspberry Pi model and operating-system combination. Keep the desktop available if you want to browse locally. A configuration that boots directly into an emulation front end can still be useful, but you must know how that installation returns to the desktop before putting it in a cabinet.

Use a controller for games and the keyboard for administration

Pair or connect the game controller through RetroPie’s controller-configuration screen. Use the keyboard when a menu requires text, a password, a shell command, or a setting that cannot be reached with the controller. The controller is optimized for play; the keyboard and mouse remain the general-purpose tools.

Switch between RetroPie and the browser

The exact menu names depend on how the system was installed, but the workflow is always an application switch: leave or minimize the emulation front end, open the desktop, launch the browser, then return to RetroPie when finished.

From the desktop to RetroPie

  1. Open the desktop application menu or launcher.
  2. Start EmulationStation or the RetroPie front end installed on your system.
  3. Select the console or computer system and launch a game with the controller.

From RetroPie to the browser

  1. Exit the running game using the emulator’s configured quit combination. If a game is unresponsive, use the front end’s exit option rather than repeatedly cutting power.
  2. Exit or suspend EmulationStation so the desktop is visible. The option may be labelled Exit, Quit, or Return to desktop depending on the installation.
  3. Move the pointer to the application menu and open Chromium or Firefox, or use the browser shortcut if one is configured.
  4. When finished, close the browser and relaunch EmulationStation from the desktop launcher.

If your installation starts directly in RetroPie and offers no desktop option, configure a desktop-capable session before relying on it for browsing. Do not assume that a browser can be launched from an emulator’s in-game menu; that menu belongs to the emulator, not the operating system.

Prevent accidental game exits

Keep the browser on the keyboard-and-mouse side of the setup and the controller dedicated to games. Avoid assigning the same controller combination to both emulator quit actions and a game’s controls. When using a wireless keyboard with a touchpad, disable or lock the touchpad during long gaming sessions if accidental pointer movement is distracting.

Browse comfortably from the sofa

Place the receiver and manage the signal path

For a USB receiver, use the port that gives the clearest path toward the seating position. A short USB extension can move a receiver away from the back of a metal television cabinet, but it is not required by the operating system. Bluetooth devices should be paired where the keyboard and mouse are within easy reach of the Pi; after pairing, test from the normal sofa position.

Plan for charging and batteries

Wireless convenience adds a maintenance task. Check the keyboard’s battery indicator before a long session, keep replacement batteries or a charging cable accessible, and avoid storing the device switched on inside a drawer. A wired set is valuable when a wireless device cannot be charged or will not reconnect.

Use the touchpad as a mouse substitute

Tap-to-click and scrolling behavior are controlled by the desktop’s pointer settings. If the pointer moves too quickly or slowly, adjust mouse or touchpad sensitivity in the desktop settings rather than changing browser settings. For text-heavy work, use the keyboard’s navigation keys and browser shortcuts so the touchpad is needed only for selecting links and controls.

Choose the browser for your actual sites

Chromium and Firefox are both available in Raspberry Pi OS. Select the browser that works with the sites, extensions, media controls, and account sign-ins you actually use. The available documentation does not establish a universal winner for memory use or compatibility, so test the pages important to you instead of relying on a generic speed claim.

Administer the Pi without leaving a keyboard by the TV

For routine administration, Raspberry Pi’s RetroPie guidance recommends enabling SSH. SSH lets you reach the device from another computer on the same network, so updates, configuration checks, and file maintenance do not require a permanently attached mouse and keyboard.

  1. Enable SSH using the Raspberry Pi configuration method available in your installation.
  2. Note the Pi’s network address or local hostname.
  3. From another computer on the same network, connect with an SSH client using the account configured during Raspberry Pi OS setup.
  4. Perform only the maintenance you understand, and shut down or reboot through the operating system when finished.

SSH does not replace local input for the first boot, Bluetooth pairing, display troubleshooting, or a forgotten network configuration. Keep the wired set in your accessories box for those situations.

Troubleshoot the common living-room failures

The TV says “no signal”

  • Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input used by the Pi.
  • On Raspberry Pi 4, verify that the cable is connected to HDMI0 rather than the other micro-HDMI socket.
  • Check that the cable matches the board model and is fully seated.
  • Power the Pi only after the display and cable are connected, then test another known-good TV input if available.

The keyboard or mouse does nothing

  • For wired devices, try another USB port and test each device separately.
  • For a receiver-based set, confirm the receiver is plugged in before boot and that the keyboard or mouse power switch is on.
  • For Bluetooth, connect a wired keyboard first, verify Bluetooth is enabled, and repeat pairing with the device close to the Pi.
  • Replace or recharge batteries before changing software settings.

Bluetooth works once, then disappears after reboot

Pairing may not have completed or the adapter may have been connected after boot. Plug a USB Bluetooth adapter in before powering on, pair again from the desktop, and keep the wired set available until the connection survives a restart.

The browser is missing from the RetroPie menu

This is normally expected. RetroPie is the emulation front end, while Chromium or Firefox belongs to the operating-system desktop. Exit or suspend EmulationStation, open the desktop launcher, and start the browser there. If the installation has no desktop session, add or enable one rather than looking for a hidden emulator menu item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The browser opens but pages are unusable

  • Confirm the Pi has a working network connection and correct date and time.
  • Close unnecessary tabs and background applications if the desktop becomes unresponsive.
  • Try the other installed browser for a site-specific compatibility problem.
  • Use a wired connection temporarily if Wi-Fi drops while streaming or signing in.

Games or the desktop become unstable

Disconnect nonessential USB devices, check the power supply, and avoid pulling the power cable while the system is running. An underpowered board or an abrupt shutdown can look like a controller, browser, or storage failure. Reconnect devices one at a time after the system is stable.

A practical setup for most living rooms

  1. Start with the correct display cable, a wired USB keyboard and mouse, a controller, network access, and the model-appropriate power supply.
  2. Complete Raspberry Pi OS setup, configure Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and choose Chromium or Firefox as the default browser.
  3. Install and configure RetroPie while the wired devices are attached.
  4. Pair a wireless keyboard with integrated touchpad, or connect a receiver-based set, and test it from the sofa.
  5. Keep the wired set labelled and stored nearby for recovery, Bluetooth pairing, and display troubleshooting.
  6. Enable SSH for maintenance once the network and account are working.

This arrangement gives the living room a single couch-friendly control surface without sacrificing the reliable tools needed to repair the system. Use the controller for emulation, the keyboard and touchpad for the desktop and browser, and switch between them by leaving one application layer and opening the other.
