A Google Cloud Compute Engine VM can stay online and host an encoder that sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live while your own computer is off. The VM does not turn a video file into a livestream by itself: you must make the file available to encoding software, configure that software to repeat it, and send its output to a YouTube live event. Google’s VM and YouTube’s encoder guides document those pieces separately; they do not provide a verified end-to-end looping recipe.
Check YouTube eligibility before creating a VM
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check this first so you do not incur cloud costs before discovering you cannot start the event. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

- A YouTube channel that is eligible to stream and a live event configured for encoder-based streaming.
- A Compute Engine VM that can run your chosen encoding software at the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to send.
- A way to make the video file accessible to that VM, plus encoding software configured to repeat it if you want it to run continuously.
- A sustainable network connection from the VM to YouTube. Google says outbound bandwidth limits depend on machine type and configuration.
There is no universal VM size established for this workload. The required CPU and network capacity depend on the video, frame rate, encoding method, and bitrate. Google’s Compute Engine instructions explain how to create and start an instance, but do not specify a machine type for every encoder workload.

Set up the VM and make the video available
- Create and start a Compute Engine instance. Follow Google’s current create and start an instance instructions. Choose a configuration with enough compute and network capacity for your encoder settings; do not assume the smallest instance can handle every resolution or encoding method.
- Provide access to your recording. Put the file somewhere the VM and encoder can read it. The reviewed Google and YouTube guidance does not prescribe a particular storage method, so choose one that fits your file size, access needs, and costs.
- Configure encoding software to repeat the file. The encoder must read the recording and be configured to loop it as needed. YouTube does not loop your source file, and the official guidance cited here does not establish a specific program or command for continuous playback. Verify the software’s instructions for your operating system and version before using a command in production.
Create the YouTube event and configure the encoder
- Set up an encoder-based live event in YouTube’s live-streaming workflow and obtain the stream details from YouTube’s Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not publish it or place it where other people can access it.
- Send the encoder feed over RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Use YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance for the current ingest details and event workflow.
- Choose settings the VM can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use its bitrate recommendations for your target resolution rather than guessing, and ensure the VM’s available compute and outbound network capacity can maintain the selected settings.
- Test before making the event public. Start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, and confirm audio and video quality. YouTube recommends testing, preparing encoder streams in advance, and checking event accessibility.
- Start the event and monitor it. Keep an eye on the Live Control Room’s stream health and the actual audio and picture. A stream can be interrupted by the VM, encoder process, file access, network path, or YouTube event; a running VM alone does not guarantee a healthy broadcast.
Plan costs and outbound data
Google Cloud charges depend on the VM, networking, storage, region, and usage. Its Compute Engine product page currently lists an e2-micro VM, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk, and up to 1 GB of monthly outbound transfer in the free tier. Google’s Free Program documentation currently describes $300 in trial credit for eligible new users, valid for 90 days. These are conditional and limited offers, not evidence that a continuously running encoder will be free. Trial eligibility and use are restricted; trial resources stop when the trial billing account closes unless it is upgraded. Free Tier limits are monthly, and overages on a paid billing account are billed at standard rates.
Estimate your actual configuration with Google’s pricing calculator, including VM runtime, disk, outbound network transfer, and any other resources. The VM sends the stream outward. For a rough data-planning estimate, multiply the chosen video bitrate by the hours streamed; the result approximates encoded video volume before protocol overhead. YouTube’s bitrate guidance helps select an input for that calculation. Google also documents outbound bandwidth limits by machine type and network configuration, so check that limit against your chosen stream settings.

Keep the stream healthy over time
For an always-on broadcast, the encoder must continue reading the file and sending data, and the VM and network must remain available. Test the complete setup before relying on it, then monitor YouTube’s preview and audio/video quality as YouTube recommends. A process supervisor, restart policy, or failover arrangement may be useful operational choices, but the cited official pages do not prescribe a particular implementation or promise uninterrupted availability. Verify any such configuration for your operating system and encoder rather than treating it as a YouTube requirement.

- You cannot start a live event: confirm channel verification and check for a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days before investigating the VM.
- The event receives no video: check that the encoder is running, the correct YouTube event and stream details are configured, and the file is accessible to the encoder.
- The video stops repeating: verify the repeat or looping setting in the encoding software. YouTube does not loop the source file for you.
- The stream is unstable or quality suffers: compare the encoder’s bitrate and resolution with YouTube’s recommendations, check whether the VM can sustain the encoding workload, and verify the machine’s outbound bandwidth limits.
- The stream key may have been exposed: treat it as compromised and replace or reset it using YouTube’s live-stream controls, then update the encoder configuration.
- The stream stops after a trial: check whether the billing account was upgraded before the trial ended and review the current billing status and resource charges in Google Cloud.
