To use an AI agent to screenshot a webpage in Firefox, choose an agent browser tool that explicitly supports Firefox, give it the page URL, specify whether you want the visible viewport, one element, or the full page, and tell it where to save the image. Playwright’s CLI documents Firefox launch support and screenshot options. If you only need a one-off capture, Firefox’s built-in screenshot controls are quicker.
Choose the capture method and scope
For repeatable agent-driven screenshots, use Playwright CLI with Firefox selected. For an AI-agent integration, Playwright MCP provides a screenshot tool. For a single manual capture, use Firefox’s screenshot controls or Developer Tools.

| Method | Best for | Capture and output |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox built-in screenshot | A quick capture without an agent | Visible area or full page; download or copy |
| Firefox Developer Tools | Manual captures with selector, delay, or clipboard options | Page or selected node; save or copy |
| Playwright CLI | Repeatable agent-directed Firefox captures | Viewport, target, or full page; save to a file |
| Playwright MCP | An agent workflow using MCP tools | Target or selector, full-page option, filename, output type, and scale |
| Playwright Page API | Code you control in a Playwright script | File, returned buffer, or locator screenshot |
Before asking the agent to capture anything, decide what the image needs to show:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Viewport: only the part currently visible in the browser.
- Element: one component identified by a target or selector.
- Full page: the full scrollable page, including content below the fold.
A screenshot is useful for checking visual layout. For understanding page structure or interacting with controls, Playwright’s documentation recommends using accessibility snapshots as well.

Use Playwright CLI with Firefox
Playwright CLI documents opening Firefox with playwright-cli open --browser=firefox. Its screenshot command captures the viewport by default; it can also capture a specified target or the full scrollable page with --full-page. See the Playwright CLI documentation for current command details.
- Start the agent’s browser session with Firefox selected:
playwright-cli open --browser=firefox. - Give the agent the exact destination URL and ask it to confirm that the intended page opened.
- Specify the scope: viewport, a particular target, or the full page. For a full-page capture, use the CLI’s
--full-pageoption. - Provide a distinct output filename and ask the agent to inspect the saved image to confirm it shows the expected result.
A useful instruction is: “Open https://example.com in Firefox, confirm the page title, capture the full page, save it as example-full.png, and check the saved image.” This wording is a practical prompt suggestion, not a guarantee that every agent will use the same command syntax or save location. Check the CLI documentation and the agent’s available browser tools for the exact screenshot command and target syntax.
Use Playwright MCP from an AI agent
If your agent connects to Playwright through MCP, use its browser_take_screenshot tool. The tool supports a target or selector for an element, a fullPage option, a filename, output type, and scale. Check the Playwright MCP documentation for the current tool interface.

- Ask the agent to open the URL in Firefox using the browser session configured for Firefox.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwith the intended scope: a selector or target for one element, orfullPagewhen you need the full scrollable page. - Set a filename, output type, and scale that suit your workflow.
- Have the agent inspect the returned or saved image, rather than assuming that a successful tool call means the correct page was captured.
MCP is an integration route, not a substitute for choosing the browser. Confirm that the configured browser is Firefox if Firefox-specific rendering is important.
Capture a screenshot in Playwright code
For a code-controlled workflow, navigate to the page and call the Playwright Page API’s screenshot method. The following JavaScript example saves a viewport screenshot to a file:
const { firefox } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await firefox.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
To save the entire scrollable page, pass fullPage: true:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
The Page API also supports returning screenshot data as a buffer and taking screenshots of locators. For the full API and supported options, see Playwright’s Page screenshot documentation.
Take a screenshot manually in Firefox
For a one-off capture without an AI agent, use Firefox’s built-in screenshot feature:
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose the visible portion or the full page. Firefox support also describes selecting a region or an automatically highlighted element.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
See Firefox’s screenshot help for the current interface and choices.

Use Firefox Developer Tools for more control
Developer Tools offer additional ways to capture the full page or a particular element:
- Full page: In Developer Tools Settings, under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. This adds the full-page screenshot button to the toolbox.
- One element: In Inspector, use Screenshot Node for the selected element.
- Command options: The Web Console’s
:screenshothelper supports full-page capture, CSS selector targeting, a delay, filename, clipboard, and device-pixel-ratio settings.
If you reuse a filename, a later capture overwrites the existing screenshot. Choose a new filename for each capture you need to keep. Refer to Mozilla’s Inspector documentation for the current Developer Tools workflow.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an API call rather than an agent controlling a local Firefox session, ScreenshotNeo takes website screenshots through a GET request. Its API returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is a separate capture service, not a way to control your Firefox window. The example below saves a screenshot of the requested URL as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The screenshot is of the wrong browser: Check that the agent or Playwright session explicitly uses Firefox. The CLI documents
--browser=firefox; an MCP connection may use a separately configured browser. - The image cuts off content below the fold: The default CLI screenshot is the viewport. Request full-page capture and use
--full-pagein the CLI, orfullPage: truein the Page API. - The wrong part of the page was captured: Clarify whether you want the viewport, a specific element, or the full page. For a single element, provide its target or selector where the tool supports it.
- A saved screenshot disappeared: Firefox’s Web Console screenshot helper overwrites a prior file with the same filename. Use a distinct name for each capture.
- You need text or structure, not just appearance: A screenshot shows pixels. Use an accessibility snapshot to understand page structure or support interaction in a Playwright agent workflow.
- The agent reports success but the image is not useful: Ask it to confirm the destination page and inspect the saved image. A successful capture operation alone does not establish that it captured the intended content.
Firefox automation context
Firefox supports remote automation protocols including Marionette and WebDriver BiDi. Marionette is also used by geckodriver to implement WebDriver HTTP; WebDriver BiDi extends WebDriver HTTP with bidirectional communication. This is background on the browser automation layer; for the screenshot workflows above, you can begin with Playwright’s Firefox option without configuring these protocols directly. See Mozilla’s remote protocol documentation.
