To multitask on a foldable, unfold it, open one app, then use the phone’s split-screen or multi-window controls to open a second app beside or above it. The exact steps depend on the manufacturer and model: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phones use Multi window, while Google Pixel Fold has Split Screen and a Taskbar. If you often use the same combination, save it as an app pair where supported.
Choose two apps that work well together
The larger inner display can keep related tasks visible at the same time. For example, you might put a browser beside email or a calendar, or keep notes open next to a reference page. These are practical pairing ideas, not a guarantee that any particular combination will improve productivity; available layouts and app support vary by device.

Open two apps side by side
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold: use Multi window
Samsung calls its split-screen and pop-up options Multi window. On supported Z Fold devices, one documented route is to open the first app, show the Taskbar, then drag another app from the Taskbar into the Multi window area. Samsung’s instructions and available controls can differ across models, so use the current instructions for your phone if the labels or layout do not match.

Google Pixel Fold: use Split Screen
On Pixel Fold, follow Google’s Split Screen instructions to open two apps together. The guide also covers choosing apps from the Taskbar and saving an app pair. Menu names and gestures may vary with the model and software version, so follow the directions shown for your device rather than assuming Samsung’s steps apply.
Save combinations you use often
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold
Samsung documents saving a split-screen setup as an App pair. From the split-screen layout, use the divider’s App pair control to save that combination. It can then be reopened as a pair rather than setting up the same two apps each time. The precise control can vary by model.

Google Pixel Fold
Google documents moving an app pair to the home screen and adding it to the Taskbar. Use those shortcuts for combinations you reopen regularly; the available save options are specific to Pixel Fold’s documented workflow.
Use a third app only if your phone supports it
Google documents a Pixel Fold option for placing an app bubble over a split-screen view, allowing three apps to be used in that arrangement. See Google’s guide to multitasking with bubbles. This is a Pixel Fold workflow, not a universal foldable-phone feature; do not assume another brand supports the same arrangement or maximum number of visible apps.

- The brighter-than-ever 8-inch Super Actua Flex display is Pixel’s largest screen yet[12]; and you can use Split Screen to plan a trip, drag and drop images, and open multiple apps at once[5]
What happens when you fold the phone
Google says Pixel Fold apps can continue to be used when the phone is folded. Continuity behavior and settings are not established here for every foldable brand, so check the support instructions for your model before relying on the same layout after folding.
Quick Recap
If the controls or layout do not match
- Check whether your phone’s instructions call the feature Multi window, Split Screen, or something else.
- Use support guidance for your exact model and software version; there is no single gesture sequence established for all foldables.
- If an app does not appear as an option, the sources cited here do not establish that every app is eligible for every layout.
