To use a wireless controller with an iPhone or iPad, put the controller into its model-specific Bluetooth pairing mode, then open Settings > Bluetooth and select it. Next, check that the game itself supports controllers: pairing a gamepad with your device does not make every game controller-compatible.
How do I connect a controller to my iPhone or iPad?
- Put the controller in pairing mode. Turn it on and follow the maker’s instructions for that exact model. The button combination varies by controller.
- Open Bluetooth settings. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on if needed.
- Select the controller. Tap its name when it appears in the nearby-device list.
- Test it in a supported game. If the game does not respond, check whether it supports controller input and look for controller options in the game’s settings.

Apple documents specific model families, not every controller sold under a brand. Check the model you own rather than assuming compatibility based on the manufacturer’s name.
Xbox controllers
Apple lists the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708), Xbox Wireless Controller Series S and Series X, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controller. PlayStation controllers
Apple lists PlayStation DualShock 4, PlayStation 5 DualSense, and DualSense Edge wireless controllers. If the controller is on, turn it off and disconnect any USB cable. Hold PS + Share on DualShock 4, or PS + Create on DualSense and DualSense Edge, until the light flashes. Select the controller in Bluetooth settings. If it pairs but does not connect, press and release the PS button. Apple provides the steps for connecting PlayStation controllers.
Can you use a controller with a cable?
Sometimes. Certain controllers automatically pair and connect when plugged directly into an Apple device with a USB cable that supports both data and charging. Whether you need an adapter depends on the iPhone or iPad and the controller; there is no one adapter that applies to every combination. For a wired connection, use a data-capable cable and check Apple’s controller connection guidance for your setup.

Check that the game supports controllers
Controller support belongs to the individual game. Apple’s developer documentation describes how developers add Game Controller capability to a game, so a successful Bluetooth connection alone does not establish that a title will accept gamepad input. See Apple’s Game Controller documentation.

Customize controls and combine two controllers
On supported software, open Settings > General > Game Controller to customize default controls or set up a game-specific configuration. Apple describes these customization settings for iOS 16 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 16 or later on iPad. Options depend on the controller and game. Details are in Apple’s controller support guide.
Apple’s Buddy Controller feature lets two connected compatible controllers act together as one player in a game that supports controllers. It can let another person help with a difficult section; both controllers contribute input for that player.

Troubleshoot pairing and controller input
- The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings: Confirm it is powered on and in the correct pairing mode for its model. Apple also recommends installing current software on the Apple device and controller.
- It appears to pair but will not connect: For the listed PlayStation controllers, press and release the PS button. Otherwise, use Bluetooth settings to forget the controller, then put it back in pairing mode and pair again.
- The game ignores input: Confirm that the game supports controllers and check its in-game control settings. A device-level connection cannot add controller support to a game.
- Some buttons or features do not work: Apple notes that support for features such as an audio jack or lights varies by controller and app. A connection does not guarantee that every controller feature is available in every game.
- The connection is intermittent: Apple recommends reducing the number of connected Bluetooth devices to help with interference-related problems.
- A wired connection fails: Check that the cable supports data as well as charging, update the Apple device and controller if needed, and confirm whether your specific device-controller combination requires an adapter.
What to check before choosing a controller
- Exact model: Apple names specific Xbox and PlayStation models. Confirm your controller is among the documented models rather than relying on its brand alone.
- Connection method: Bluetooth avoids a cable; USB can work with a data-and-charging cable and may require an adapter, depending on the hardware.
- Your game: Verify controller support in the specific title before buying a controller for it.
- Controls and accessibility: Consider whether you need button customization or a setup such as Buddy Controller, and confirm the game supports the controls you plan to use. Apple lists Xbox Adaptive Controller among its documented models.
